Fergie targets three signings

Sir Alex Ferguson has ruled out wholesale changes at Old Trafford this summer.

But the Manchester United manager expects to make 'two or three signings' to strengthen the squad which won the Premiership title.

'There won't be massive dealings,' Ferguson told the club's official website. 'But hopefully there will be two, or maybe three, that will come in.'

Reports of a clear-out were mooted but United's end-of-season form - together with their avowed intention to keep David Beckham - means the vast majority of Ferguson's current squad will be at Old Trafford again next year.

But Ferguson has been linked with vast numbers of players, with Paris Saint-Germain saying United want Brazilian Ronaldinho and Real Madrid's Claude Makelele denying he wanted to join the Premiership winners.

Other reported targets include Blackburn winger Damien Duff, West Ham striker Jermain Defoe, Leeds keeper Paul Robinson and Portuguese starlet Ricardo Queresma.

Clough backs O'Neill for Man Utd post

Brian Clough says Celtic manager Martin O'Neill is the best succesor to Sir Alex Ferguson as Manchester United boss.
The former Nottingham Forest chief says he is a big fan of O'Neill's achievements at Celtic and thinks the Irishman has all the qualities necessary for the Old Trafford hot seat.

"Sir Alex has announced - or the club's announced - that he's going to be there practically until he dies," Clough told BBC Radio Five Live.

"But Martin will be like good wine. If he's got to wait another five or six years for the job then it won't do him any harm at all.

"He'll add experience every week he stays at Celtic and, like good wine, he'll be maturing.

"When he walks into Old Trafford, as we hope he does, then he will be near-enough the finished article."

Clough said he felt O'Neill deserved great credit for getting Celtic to the Uefa Cup final.

"He's got experience at every level now, he's won championships - whether the league is supposed to be good, bad or indifferent, you've got to still win it," he said.

"He's winning matches where even the Liverpools and the Manchester Uniteds are getting knocked out early.

"He's got to a final when no one expected him to.

"I don't think I could come up with something if we talked all day that he hasn't got. He's got the lot."

Fergie targets the Champions League

Reds boss Sir Alex Ferguson says his side must again triumph in the Champions League to truly reflect the club’s influence on the history of Europe’s premier competition.

With the Champions League final being played in United’s own back garden in a little over a week, Fergie has claimed the Reds are one small step, rather than one giant leap, away from lifting the European Cup for the third time in the club’s history.

Ferguson said: ”We’re not far away, definitely not far away. The club has won the trophy twice but that doesn’t really represent us properly. We’ve got to do better than that.”

Sir Alex is hoping for more performances like the second leg tie with Real Madrid in Manchester. The key is to go one further next time out.

"This club could easily be involved in more games like that,” Ferguson promised. “We’ll always go for it when there are situations that require us to go for it.”

Despite many observers suggesting Real were streets ahead of United in the Bernabeu, Ferguson believes the supposed gulf was non-existent when the two sides returned to Old Trafford.

”We maybe just didn’t get the breaks at the right time. If we had got a second goal in the Bernabeu when we had the ascendancy in the match, it would have been an interesting game.

"That’s taking nothing away from the quality of Real Madrid. They showed in periods of the first half in Madrid how great they are," he added.

The 4-3 thriller back in Manchester was a signal to Ferguson that the two teams are not so far apart. “It was a pleasure to improve from that performance and do what we did at Old Trafford,” said the Reds boss.

By the time the next Champions League final comes around, it will be five years since that memorable night in the Nou Camp in 1999. And with Fergie's hunger for the trophy ever-increasing after two emotional finals missed - Glasgow and Manchester - European glory will be high on the list of priorities once again next season.

Moyes fury over Butt

DAVID MOYES has accused the FA of double standards over Wayne Rooney.

The Everton boss is still fuming at England ordering a medical on striker Rooney - but NOT making the same demand to Manchester United over midfielder Nicky Butt's ankle injury.

Moyes demanded to be present when Rooney, 17, was examined by England medical staff on Sunday to determine the extent of his knee problem.

England boss Sven Goran Eriksson was infuriated by Moyes' attitude but Rooney was ruled out of the trip to South Africa for Thursday's friendly.

Everton now say he is also a doubt for the June 11 Euro 2004 qualifier against Slovakia at Middlesbrough.

Butt has been ordered to rest for the summer but Everton are still furious at the FA taking the United star's injury at face value - but not Rooney's.

Phil Neville
PHIL NEVILLE has spent more than a decade at Manchester United as an after-thought.
The utility man, 26, is aptly named - because he Phils in everywhere.

But whenever United are at full-strength, Neville is out on his ear.

Would he change it? Would he heck.

Neville, back in the England squad for the first time in over a year, said: "I've just won another championship medal which means I've got six. It's a convincing argument for why I'm happy to stay.

"I might play more games if I left Old Trafford but I wouldn't be happier.

"I've never been offered a route out. The manager has always made it clear how important I am to the club."

Neville is aiming for 50 caps - so that he and Gary become the first brothers to reach the half-century mark for England.

Phil, who has so far made 37 appearances, added: "Being out of the squad has made me realise how much I've missed it. I've never thought of quitting on England."

What The Papers Say: Tuesday 20 May

United eyeing Baraja
Manchester United are lining up a move for £18 million-rated Valencia midfielder Ruben Baraja. Spain star Baraja, 27, is viewed as a long-term replacement for Roy Keane and has hinted he is willing to listen to offers. His agent, Manuel Garcia Quilon, said: "We haven't had direct contact with Manchester United, but we have been informed by intermediaries that United and another English club are interested. Ruben wants to go to a club with real ambition."
Peter Edwards, Daily Express

Fergie backs 'bullish' Brown
Sir Alex Ferguson believes Wes Brown has the mental strength to recover from the latest set-back in his injury-blighted career. The Manchester United manager feels deeply for Brown, who has been ruled out until next year after rupturing cruciate ligaments in a knee for the second time in four years, and is bakcing him to return as good as ever. "It's an absolute tragedy, "said Ferguson. "But the one bit of light is that these operations are not the terrors they were. I am very confident Wes will be back as quick as possible and as good as ever."
Neil Squires, Daily Express

Neville's silver lining
Phil Neville admitted last night he only has to look at his medal haul to remind himself why he stays at Manchester United. Neville accepts he will never be able to nail down a first choice place at Old Trafford, especially with boss Sir Alex Ferguson poised to strengthen his squad over the summer. But the versatile 26-year-old said leaving United is something he simply could not contemplate - because nothing could be better. Neville, who has earned an unexpected England recall for Thursday's game against South Africa, said: "I've won six championships, two FA Cup and the Champions League. If I left I might play more games, but I know I wouldn't be as happy."
Martin Lipton, Daily Mirror

Deadly hug
Bryan Robson launched a grovelling bid to take over the vacant manager's job at Aston Villa yesterday with a fawning tribute to unpopular club chairman Doug Ellis. The England legend is so keen to get back on the managerial ladder and ingratiate himself with Ellis that he claimed the 76-year-old was doing an "unbelievable" job of building the club up. Robson, out of work since being sacked by Middlesbrough two years ago, believes the blame for Villa's fall to mediocrity lies with former bosses Graham Taylor and John Gregory...and most certainly not king-maker Ellis. The former midfield great's views are at odds with Taylor's who quit last week claiming Ellis was holding the club back and should retire. Villa fans have also protested against Ellis's continued stewardship. Robson will face tough competition from David O'Leary and perhaps Leicester boss Micky Adams for the job, but telling Ellis just what he wants to hear will have done his chances no harm, unless his rivals launch their own servile charm offensive.
Simon Bird, Daily Mirror

Plaits the way to do it
The plaits are just a passing fancy but no one should underestimate the straight-thinking that goes on beneath the skull of David Beckham. The England football captain recently expressed the opinion that it might not be a bad thing if the authorities forced the England team to play Slovakia in an empty stadium. Many poured scorn on such a suggestion and yet it was not only a courageous statement by the nation's most prominent player. It was well-founded, constructive and absolutely right. It took guts, to say it - the kind of guts absent for decades at FA headquarters while the hooligans who follow the England side have wrecked and polluted countless towns and cities throughout Europe.
John Sadler, The Sun

Mak 'no' to United
Real Madrid midfielder Claude Makelele has insisted he's not interestd in signing for Manchester United. Makelele has been linked with a move to the Premiership, with United leading the chase, but the Frenchman said: "My representatives have not been speaking to Manchester United and I don't want to play for United."
George Scott, Daily Star

Loyal Nev's United mad
Phil Neville last night hit back at the critics who claim he's daft to stay in the shadows at Manchester United. Neville is set to face South Africa in Durban on Thursday at left-back, despite being in and out of the Champions' side and playing mainly in midfield this season. "I've never been offered a route out of United," insisted Neville, 26, who's back in the squad for the first time since before the World Cup. "Sir Alex Ferguson's always made it clear how important I am to the club. As long as he is happy with me, then that's OK with me."
David Woods, Daily Star

The chips are down, Becks
David Beckham and England have been carping before even landing in South Africa by demanding they are only served ... English fish. The England skipper has proved there is no plaice like home when it comes to the squad's diet. But staff at the Beverley Hills hotel in Durban cod not believe it as Becks and co's request left the chefs floundering before the three day visit began.
Danny Fullbrook, Daily Star

Don't you know who we are?
In this age of celebrity worship it is gratifying to hear that the fully-booked Brasserie restaurant in Chester's Grosvenor Hotel turned away Messrs Beckham, Ferdinand and Scholes when the United superstars had strolled in without warning after a day at the Chester races fully expecting a dinner table to be found for them.

Ferguson focus strikes a nerve

My previous article about Manchester United's Sir Alex Ferguson definitely struck a nerve. Some of you passionately believe that I am an imbecile and should have my head checked because Fergie is the best manager ever, while others made a point to agree with me "1000 percent" even though you may be Manchester United fans. Either way, thank you for your messages.

To all who attacked me, I just want to reiterate my points about the manager of Manchester United -- I do believe that he was one of the best managers of all time, but now that is not the case any more. He has been at Old Trafford for so many years that he has lost his focus a bit, and players have started to tune him out.

I know the Red Devils won the Premiership title again, but wouldn't you agree that Arsenal's embarrassingly poor run at the end of the campaign had something to do with that? My point was that in big games Ferguson tries too hard to do something strange or different in order to stand out. That has cost him dearly at times, especially in Europe. I am not trying to take away anything from what he has accomplished in his career.

What does the English league have to do now to improve to be the best in Europe and perform as good as Spanish teams?
--aboudi, paris

The quality of the football played in the Premiership is still behind the level of La Liga and the Serie A mostly because of the fact English teams were prohibited from playing in Europe for six years after the Heysel stadium tragedy. Let's face it: Only Manchester United has done well in the European Cup in the last 14 years. They were the only team to make the final, while Italy, Spain and even Germany have sent more teams to the title match. What English teams need to do is start training their youngsters in another kind of game -- a skilled game. We're starting to see that now with players like Joe Cole, Wayne Rooney and Jermaine Pennant. Give it time. English clubs will find their place in the European sunshine.

Pain in Spain was a positive for United

Reds manager Sir Alex Ferguson says the 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid in the Bernabeu may well have been a major turning point for United’s Premiership title success.

Fergie also believes Arsenal’s exit from the Champions League almost certainly hindered their own push for the title.

But on a night when United were said to have been outclassed in Madrid, Sir Alex says playing on such a big stage helped lift his players to a different level. The evidence for this; a 6-2 mauling of Newcastle just three days later.

Ferguson said of the game: “No matter how the result panned out, playing in these games is fabulous for players. We showed that. We played against Real Madrid midweek in the Bernabeu, then went up to Newcastle on the Saturday and produced our best performance of the season. There’s no logic to it, but it happens. Players rise to playing on the big stage.”

And having watched Arsenal crash out at the second group phase, Ferguson knew the impetus had gone from their play.

”When they [Arsenal] went out I knew it would be a bad blow to them,” Ferguson said.

And with United having captured that all-important momentum and Arsenal grappling for any form they could find, it was Fergie's side who clinched the title, even sooner than most people had expected.

”After the game against Arsenal I thought it would go to the last match,” Fergie said. “But my son phoned me after they played Everton and said ‘Arsenal looked heavy legged’. I thought maybe then, that they could drop points.”

Baraja fancies United move

Valencia's highly-rated midfielder Ruben Baraja is interested in a big-money offer from Manchester United.

Old Trafford boss Sir Alex Ferguson is thought to have expressed an interest in the 27-year-old Spanish international, who has also attracted the attention of Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Baraja only recently signed an extension to his current contract, which ties him to Valencia until 2008.

However, United are one of the few clubs in Europe with enough cash available to force Valencia into a deal, although Ferguson would be reluctant to match the estimated £18million price-tag which has been placed on Baraja's head.

'There are rumours regarding interest from Manchester United in Baraja but no-one has officially contacted us,' admitted the player's representative Manuel Garcia Quilon.

'His contract is not due to expire for another five years but he is a very ambitious player and if there was an interesting offer that is good for his sporting career and for the club, he would consider it.'

A player in the Roy Keane mould, Baraja's arrival would offer Ferguson the alternative of dropping his inspirational skipper into a central defensive position, providing the cunning the United boss felt was missing from his side's Champions League challenge this season.

A move for Baraja is possible, particularly if Brazilian World Cup winner Ronaldinho opts for a move to Spain should he confirm expectations and quit Paris St Germain this summer.

Wanted: By Manchester United

First it was Kasey Keller. Then Brad Friedel. Now it appears that Tim Howard might become the latest U.S. National Team goalkeeper to play in the vaunted English Premier League.

ESPN.com has learned through a source that Manchester United, perhaps the world's most revered club, has made an offer to Major League Soccer in hopes of acquiring the 24-year-old MetroStar.

When reached for comment, MLS Deputy Commissioner Ivan Gazidis would only say the following: "There's discussions about our top players every day, as clubs around the world express interest on a regular basis."

The EPL champions originally got in contact with Howard and MetroStars G.M. Nick Sakiewicz in March. They requested to get a look at the MLS all-star in training over in England, but settled for a series of video clips since the MetroStars were already gathered for preseason training. At the time, Sakiewicz said that Howard would have his blessing to go if a contract was offered, while Howard was quoted as saying, "You dream about things like this," calling Manchester United "the biggest sports team in world history."

After watching tapes of Howard in action, Man. U. sent its goalkeeper coach, Paul Barron, to Houston to take in the U.S.-Mexico friendly on May 8. He was apparently sold on Howard after seeing him stifle the Mexicans with five saves in posting a shutout in the 0-0 draw. Manager Sir Alex Ferguson could be looking at Howard as an understudy to France's Fabien Barthez, the World Cup hero in 1998, or as a less expensive option as his first-team keeper should the 31-year-old Barthez be let go.

Bringing Howard in could be one of the "two or three signings" that Ferguson recently mentioned could be in store for Manchester United, rather than the wholesale changes that have been speculated since the club was defeated by Real Madrid in the quarterfinals of the Champions League.

Ferguson has been rumored to be going after Brazilian midfielder Ronaldinho, Real Madrid midfielder Claude Makelele and Blackburn's Damien Duff, amongst others, to round out his juggernaut that includes world stars such as David Beckham, Ryan Giggs and Barclayard Player of the Year Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Howard signed a four-year contract with MLS in January to make the league's maximum ($270,000). He would stand to get a considerable raise with Man. U. and Major League Soccer would also receive a transfer fee for a player of Howard's caliber. Should Man. U. want Howard available for preseason training, the squad will be touring the U.S. this summer with games in Seattle (July 22), Los Angeles (July 27), East Rutherford, N.J. (July 31) and Philadelphia (Aug. 3).

The North Brunswick, N.J., native joined the MetroStars in 1998 season as a Project 40 player. He played in 19 games his first three seasons before becoming the team's starter in 2001. Since that time, he has led MLS in saves the past two seasons and has blossomed into the top goalkeeper in the league.

Howard, who trained in the off-season with Feyenoord in Holland, has been just as exceptional in 2003, being one of the main reasons why Bob Bradley's club is off and running with a 4-1-1 record to top the Eastern Conference. In that time, he has posted three shutouts and has allowed a mere three goals for a league-leading 0.49 goals-against-average, including a current 229-minute shutout streak dating back to May 3. For the U.S. National Team, he has played in five games this year, going 2-1-1, after winning his only two starts for Bruce Arena's squad in 2002.

At 6-foot-3, 210 pounds, the former high school basketball star is known for his long reach and tremendous athleticism that allows him to make acrobatic saves on balls that normally would find the back of the net.

"You can hit a shot that you promise is going in and you think is going in the net already, and he'll go and make the most mind-boggling save," says Columbus Crew midfielder Kyle Martino. "He's a tough goalkeeper to beat day-in and day-out."

That's what some of the top players in the world already say about Friedel and Keller. Maybe next season that's what they'll be saying about Howard.

England captain David Beckham has claimed he would welcome being asked to become an ambassador for London's 2012 Olympics bid.
A report on Tuesday suggested the Manchester United star will be asked about the role because of his worldwide fame.

And although the Manchester United midfielder has not yet been approached, he revealed he would be honoured to do so.

"No-one has approached me, but to be honest it would be a great honour," Beckham said while on England duty in South Africa ahead of Thursday's friendly in Durban.

'Honour'

Beckham, who has a mansion in Hertfordshire, set the opening ceremony of last year's Commonwealth Games in Manchester alight when he made a surprise appearance.

He presented the Jubilee Baton to the Queen, along with six-year-old Kirsty Howard, who is terminally ill and the face of a fundraising campaign for Francis House Children's Hospice in Manchester.

Beckham said other sporting legends were leading their country's Olympic bids, and said he would relish the opportunity to represent his country.

"If Raul and (Zinedine) Zidane are doing it for various bids, then I would love to as well," he said.

"It would be a great honour."

Man Utd mull Howard move

Manchester United have entered talks with New York MetroStars about signing their goalkeeper Tim Howard, the Major League club have confirmed.

The 23-year-old suffers from Tourette's Syndrome - a neurological disorder that causes nervous tics and uncontrolled verbal outbursts or random swearing.

But Howard has worked hard to control the condition and may now be heading to the Premiership.

"I know there are discussions, but I don't know how serious they are," New York MetroStars head coach Bob Bradley told BBC GMR.

"A club like Manchester United, competing in the Champions League, needs top players. Tim is a young player who I think we will see move up the ladder quickly."

The deal could still stall over a visa for the goalkeeper.

Howard has yet to play for the United States in a serious international because of the form of Blackburn's Brad Friedel and Spurs' Kasey Keller.

Several other goalkeepers have also been linked with summer moves to Old Trafford, including Leeds' Paul Robinson and Southampton's Antti Niemi.

The speculation over a new goalkeeper arriving at Old Trafford has arisen since Fabien Barthez's poor performances against Real Madrid.

In the closing stages of United's campaign the Frenchman lost his place to Roy Carroll.

Ferdinand searching for World Cup form

DURBAN, May 22 (Reuters) - England defender Rio Ferdinand accepts that he failed to reproduce his World Cup form for Manchester United last season.

Ferdinand was outstanding in England's campaign in Japan last year but has struggled to repeat those performances since arriving at Old Trafford last July for £30million.

'I think it's obvious I haven't played the way I played at the World Cup,' he told reporters as he prepared for Thursday's friendly against South Africa in Durban.

'I've had good games and I've had bad games and that's not the standards that I set myself.

'This has probably been one of my most inconsistent seasons in terms of the way I played. But it's a new club, new environment and you've got to get settled. Hopefully, next season they'll see a more progressive side of my game.

'Next season's a new season, and a fresh beginning.'

Despite his erratic performances, Ferdinand played his part in bringing home the club's 15th league title after United hit an unbeaten run of form from late December.

'We started off the season being very inconsistent in terms of performance and weren't really playing well at all,' he conceded. 'After Christmas, we changed.

'The back end of the season was fantastic and to win the championship in my first year at the club has been a great achievement and it's something that justifies why I went to United.'

However, what Ferdinand feels needs greater justification is an international fixture list which keeps players hanging on for nearly a month after their domestic season has finished.

England have Thursday's match, another friendly on June 3 against Serbia and Montenegro, plus a Euro 2004 qualifier against Slovakia on June 11 - the premier league season having ended on May 11.

'The whole fixture list is a bit baffling,' Ferdinand said.

'I can't understand why UEFA and others can't get it sorted that we play a week or two weeks after the season -- rather than a full month after it's finished...a month down the line is a long time to continue being fit just for one game.

'If you want to get the best out of the players these days you need to give them as much rest as possible when you can, and summer's the only time we can do that.'

Ferdinand felt there was only one consolation for the England squad: 'The French players have got it even worse -- they've got to go to the Confederations Cup (June 18-29). It's just laughable really.'

Sven: Bad luck on Becks

David Beckham left Durban nursing a broken bone in his hand after his season came to a painful end in England's 2-1 victory against South Africa.

The friendly was due to be Beckham's final game of the season in any case as he is suspended for England's Euro 2004 qualifier against Slovakia in June.

However, he wanted to go out on a high note as he captained the side in Durban after describing his meeting with Nelson Mandela the previous day as 'one of the greatest moments of my career'.

Instead, he was forced out of the game in Durban early in the second half, holding his strapped-up right hand in some pain.

Beckham, who at least now has more than two months before the start of next season, underwent a precautionary x-ray and was said to have broken the scaphoid bone between his thumb and wrist.

He was flying to Spain with the rest of the squad ahead of their break in La Manga but will then travel onto Manchester, where he will be assessed further by the Manchester United medical team.

England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson revealed: 'It is bad luck for him in what was his last game of the season, but David will still travel back with us.

'Our doctor and the Manchester United doctor are going to speak to each other and see how long it will be before he is fit again. In fact, I'm sure they have probably already spoken to each other.

'I'm sorry for him. I hope he will recover as quickly as possible and can have a normal life over the summer.'

Beckham's injury appeared to have been accidental, although there were some physical challenges in a friendly which was settled by Emile Heskey's second-half winner.

'You talk about 'friendlies' these days but you have to be proud that when England come, all the other nations want to beat us. That's an honour for us,' said Eriksson.

'We have to be prepared for it and we were prepared, although maybe we weren't against Australia in February, when the players had other duties coming up the next weekend.'

Eriksson insisted that his six other substitutions - with Matthew Upson making his debut - were not enforced, although Heskey did go off with blisters just moments after his close-range strike.

In the absence of Wayne Rooney, the Liverpool striker had nevertheless given the required response to the teenager's impact on his first England start last month against Turkey.

'Emile Heskey played very well and I'm very happy for him,' added Eriksson.

'He's had a difficult season but he did very well, was very strong, kept the ball and scored the winning goal. Very good.'

England had earlier seized the lead after just 36 seconds when Gareth Southgate headed home his second international goal from Beckham's free-kick.

However, South Africa equalised 16 minutes later, when Benni McCarthy converted a penalty awarded following a handball by Danny Mills.

Frank Lampard and Darius Vassell both made positive impacts as substitutes, but England were still indebted to Heskey's winner in an otherwise largely uninspiring game.

'In the first half we didn't play very well and defended a bit poorly as a team in not closing our opponents down. Our passing was also not the best in the world,' admitted Eriksson.

'In the second half, we improved and we deserved the victory. South Africa played better in the first half but I'm sure that they will only get better in the future.'

He added: 'I enjoyed our visit very much. It is not exactly normal to get up at 6am on the day before a game but it was worth it to see Nelson Mandela.

'It is probably the only chance I will get to do that in my life.'

Neville a red forever

Gary Neville cannot bear the thought of playing for anyone besides his beloved Manchester United.

The passionate full back cannot fathom ex-Reds who move away from Old Trafford to play for United's rivals.

"I know that if I played for another team I wouldn’t get the same feeling," Neville is quoted as saying in United’s Members Review.

"There are certain teams I can’t play for, or to use a better word, won’t play for. I can never understand how a player can play for United and then play for rival clubs," he added.

It's safe to assume the sight of Gary Neville in a Liverpool or City shirt is not an image we are likely to see. Gary's undying faith for the club he plays for, and supports, is evidently as strong as ever.

"I hope I never have to leave but the reality is that one day whether soon or in five or six years, it may happen," he added.

MANCHESTER, England, May 22 (AFP) - Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson has put Brazil World Cup star Ronaldinho at the top of his wish list but realistically expects to sign a French defender, Portuguese forward and English goalkeeper in the close season.
Ferguson told United's official website on Monday: "There wont be massive dealings. But hopefully there will be two, maybe three, that will come in."

The Manchester Evening News said Thursday the top three on his wanted list were French Under-21 international full-back Julien Escude, who plays for Rennes, Sporting Lisbon's 19-year-old Ricardo Quaresma and Leeds United goalkeeper Paul Robinson.

Ferguson tried to sign the four million pound (six million dollar)-rated Escude last August.

The five million pound-rated Quaresma is said to be the best thing to come out of Portugal since Luis Figo.

His chances of coming to Old Trafford were rated good because of United coach Carlos Quierozs links with Sporting.

Ferguson could probably get Robinson for eight million pounds from cash-strapped Leeds as a replacement for French keeper Fabien Barthez.

Paris St Germain new coach Vahid Halilhodzic has already said he does not want to lose Ronaldinho but the indebted French club would probably take 15 million pounds.

New club chairman Francis Graille has told United to come back after the French Cup final on May 31.

But Spanish sides Barcelona and Valencia are also interested.

Ferguson was said to have been put off by the 15 million pounds Blackburn Rovers have demanded for their Irish winger Damien Duff

And Leeds' Australian forward Harry Kewell was reported to be unimpressed about a move to Manchester who have offered seven million pounds.

That could let in Joe Cole now that West Ham have been relegated.

Ferguson wanted to sign the eight million-pound-rated 21-year-old as a youngster but he preferred to stay at home in London.

Juventus' French international defender Lilian Thuram, Dutch striker Roy Makaay, the leading scorer in Spain with Deportivo La Coruna, and Sunderland's 20-year-old French forward David Bellion are other possibilities.

The chances of Bellion moving to Old Trafford look high because Fergie tried to sign him in January and he is a free agent at the end of June.

Superstar Beckham floored by a part-timer

DURBAN, South Africa, May 23 (AFP) - Part-time South Africa footballer Thabang Molefe brought 90,000-pound-a-week England superstar David Beckham down to earth Thursday.
A reckless first half tackle by defender Molefe fractured the thumb of the Manchester United midfielder, but did not prevent him leaving the Indian Ocean city for London a few hours later.

Beckham winced with pain after a foul for which Molefe was cautioned and the England captain made way for Jermaine Jenas six minutes into the second half of the friendly international.

England won 2-1 through goals from defender Gareth Southgate after 36 seconds and striker Emile Heskey in the 64th minute. Striker Benni McCarthy levelled for Bafana Bafana (The Boys) from a first half penalty.

A spokesman at the Durban hospital where Beckham was taken to said the highest paid footballer in the world had fractured a scafoid, the small bone leading from his thumb to his wrist.

"It's bad luck for David. It was his last fixture of the season. I do hope he can recover as quickly as possible and enjoy his holidays," said England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson.

Opposite number Jomo Sono countered: "Thabang was among our best players. I thought he marked David Beckham out of the game."

Beckham cannot play in a Euro 2004 qualifier against Slovakia in Middlesbrough on June 11 due to a one-match suspension and is not scheduled to be in action again until United play pre-season friendlies in August.

Eriksson said his players gave South Africa too much space during the first half before a sell-out 52,000 crowd at Absa Stadium, home of a provincial rugby union team.

"In the first half maybe we didn't play and we didn't get close enough to our opponents, but we fixed that in the second half and deserved to win," Eriksson told a news conference.

Liverpool striker Michael Owen, the second most popular visiting footballer after Beckham, was equally upbeat given the limited time to prepare for the second meeting of the countries with England also winning 2-1 six years ago.

"We played well as we couldn't really train properly and we practiced at the wrong times. Considering all that went on before the match, I thought it was a good performance," he said.

After arriving in Durban to a rapturous welcome Tuesday, 12 of the England squad, including Beckham and Owen, flew to Johannesburg the following day to meet former South African president Nelson Mandela.

Southgate was equally enthusiastic about a victory against rivals who changed coaches 96 hours before the match when a national football association order to include certain Europe-based players was rejected.

"It's important for the spirit of the team ahead of the match against Slovakia. It was a great experience coming here and we might have to return and play a World Cup."

The match launched an international campaign to bring the 2010 World Cup to South Africa. Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Nigeria and Tunisia are the other contenders in a race confined to African nations.

What The Papers Say: Thursday 22 May

Break dance – Becks ready for rest
David Beckham believes fiery Scot Sir Alex Ferguson will play a crucial role in England’s European Championship bid next summer. The Manchester United star has not always seen eye to eye with his boss, especially when left out of crucial matches, including the recent Champions League quarter-final second-leg clash with Real Madrid. But Beckham acknowledged that Ferguson was only protecting his players from footballing burn-out as he geared up for tonight’s friendly with South Africa in Durban. Beckham said: “The manager is always good at resting you during the season. He picks the right time to give players a rest.”
John Curtis, Manchester Evening News

I want to be a Red legend - Richardson
Kieran Richardson says he will not rest until he becomes a "legend" at Manchester United. The determined 18-year-old had an amazing season at Old Trafford, making his first-team debut, scoring his first goal at the Stretford End and lifting the FA Youth Cup. But, despite the boys' comic-book heroics, he still was not satisfied, as his lack of goals meant he had not matched all of the aims he had set himself while on holiday in Barbados last summer. "It's been a good season, but I feel I could have done better," said Richardson. "I have achieved something in actually playing at Manchester United but it's just a beginning. There is no point in just playing a couple of games here and there - my main aim is to be a legend at Manchester United. People will forget me in a couple of years' time if I don't go on and play on a regular basis."
Stuart Brennan, Manchester Evening News

Freed Roche is on move
Lee Roche has been freed by Manchester United, and has been linked with First Division Bradford City. The defender made three first-team appearances for the Reds, making his debut in the League Cup tie with Arsenal in 2001, and this season starting in the Champions League game at Deportivo La Coruna and appearing as a sub in the 5-3 home win over Newcastle.
Stuart Brennan, Manchester Evening News

Rio and pals face burn-out
Rio Ferdinand and his fellow English Reds are in grave danger of suffering burn-out from an excessive fixture list. The United defender, on duty for England in South Africa tonight, faces up to 80 games for club and country next season. That staggering figure will be reached if United have a successful Champions League campaign and England reach the final of Euro 2004.
Frank White, Manchester Evening News

Fergie's new keeper
Manchester United have agreed a deal for goalkeeper Tim Howard, the American who has fought an extraordinary battle with Tourette's Syndrome. The 23-year-old has risen to the top in America with New York MetroStars despite suffering from the neurological disorder that causes nervous tics and uncontrolled verbal outbursts or random swearing. The 6ft 2in star has quickly risen to the top of the Major League. United initially contacted Howard and MetroStars general manager Nick Sakiewicz in March, expressing interest. Howard said then: "You dream about things like this. They are the biggest sports team in world history." After viewing tapes of him in action, United manager Sir Alex Ferguson sent goalkeeping coach Paul Barron to Houston to watch the recent United States-Mexico friendly. Barron was hugely impressed after Howard kept a clean sheet and made five stunning saves - and has now persuaded Fergie to pursue the player.
Alan Nixon, Daily Mirror

United close in on £12m Ronaldinho
Ronaldinho’s emergence as the new face of Nike looks like sealing him a £12million move to Manchester United. Negotiations have already started to bring the 23-year-old to Old Trafford once the French season finishes at the end of the month. Sir Alex Ferguson wants to establish a better link between his midfield and attack – and has made the Brazilian his prime target. Just as significantly, Nike are using the Paris Saint Germain forward’s image to sell their new range and would welcome his presence at their flagship club. The Sportswear giants insist they avoid trying to influence transfer policy, but Nike hardly need to point out the mutual benefits of one of their most marketable clients teaming up with their major football partner.
John Edwards, Daily Mail

Stop this crush says Rio
Rio Ferdinand wants Premiership stars to rise up and unite against the game's crazy fixture list. Manchester United ace Ferdinand will be at the heart of the defence when England take on South Africa in Durban tonight. It is the first of three end-of-season internationals after a long, arduous season. The next is another friendly against Serbia and Montenegro in Leicester on June 3 and the last the Euro 2004 qualifier against Slovakia at Middlesbrough on June 11. Then Ferdinand faces a season that could go on for an incredible 363 days. He returns to club training on July 7 and if England go all the way in Europe the final is on July 4 2004. Potentially he could have 80 games in that time, one every four and a half days. He said: "It's a bit baffling sometimes that we've got to travel so far as we have. The whole fixture list is a bit baffling."
Shaun Custis, The Sun

Gary: I dread leaving home
Gary Neville admits he dreads the day he may have to consider leaving Manchester United. ‘I know that if I played for another team I wouldn’t get the same feeling,’ the 27-year-old England full-back told United’s Members Review. ‘There are certain teams I can’t play for, or to use a better word, won’t play for. I can never understand how a player can play for United and then play for rivals clubs. I hope I never have to leave but the reality is that one day whether soon or in five or six years, it may happen.’
Sports staff, Daily Mail

Inter get wheels rolling for Becks
David Beckham will return from South Africa after tonight’s friendly in Durban to discover that the multi-million pound auction for his signature is about to spring into life. Inter Milan will start the transfer bidding by declaring their intention of utilising the financial clout of long-standing sponsors Pirelli to bankroll the personal terms and record fee for the England captain. Inter’s move will surely inspire a bid from Real Madrid, with Manchester United likely to accept any offer that goes beyond £30million.
Harry Harris, Daily Express

Rio rage
Rio Ferdinand last night called on Europe’s football to sort out the fixture chaos that is leaving top stars shattered. The Manchester United star will play his 51st match of the season when he lines up for England in South Africa tonight. But he can’t understand why England’s key Euro 2004 qualifier against Slovakia is being played on June 11 – exactly a month after United’s last Premiership match against Everton. Rio blasted: “The whole fixture list is a bit baffling. The lads can’t understand why Uefa can’t get it sorted so we play a week or two straight after the season instead of having to go on for a full month.
David Woods, Daily Star

And finally, the conspiracy theorists are scraping the barrel here…

Becks hair to a fortune
Is Beckham’s newly-braided barnet a marketing ploy? I once walked through a shanty village in Tanzania and was surrounded by small children. The only word of English they knew became evident when they pointed at my trainers and said: “adidas!” Brands like adidas and Pepsi pay Becks £1m a year, he has an adidas deal worth £7m over five years and, just before tonight’s match in Durban, he has adopted a hairstyle which is normally associated with black dudes. What a happy coincidence.

Kenyon loves Champions League nights

Peter Kenyon expects Old Trafford to come alive next Wednesday night when the famous stadium stages the 2003 UEFA Champions League Final.

Talking exclusively to MU.tv, United's chief executive said:

"There's something really special about Tuesday and Wednesday nights with the floodlights on, the Champions League music and the big teams at Old Trafford.

"Old Trafford seems to take on a new atmosphere. It's a spine-chilling experience every time."

Kenyon insists the Champions League is still a top-quality competition, despite the fact that teams who haven't won their domestic title can qualify.

"Everyone's a big team in this competition," he explained.

"People say it's been widened and it's not just the champions any more, but whatever way you look at it, it's the best 32 teams in Europe."

Beckham faces anxious wait

David Beckham will find out the extent of the damage to his wrist on Friday after fracturing it in England's 2-1 win over South Africa.
The England captain, who broke the scaphoid bone in his right hand after a heavy fall, is expected to travel to Old Trafford on Friday afternoon to allow Manchester United's medical staff to assess the injury.

Beckham would have missed England's Euro 2004 qualifier against Slovakia regardless of the injury because of a suspension.

But the length of his lay-off will become clearer on Friday.

A spokesman for the Football Association said: "David has suffered a fractured scaphoid, which is a bone at the bottom of the thumb leading into the wrist bone.

"He went to hospital after suffering the injury, had an X-ray and it has been confirmed that there is a break.

As regards the extent of the injury in terms of how long David will need treatment, we are not sure at this stage.

"But David has flown back to England from South Africa and will return to Manchester United for treatment. Hopefully it can settle down quickly and he can have a good summer."

Manager Sven-Goran Eriksson was anxious about the extent of the injury, which can take anything from six weeks to six months to heal.

The Swede said: "It is bad luck for him in what was his last game of the season.

"Our doctor and the Manchester United doctor are going to speak to each other and see how long it will be before he is fit again. In fact, I'm sure they have probably already spoken to each other.

"I'm sorry for him. I hope he will recover as quickly as possible and can have a normal life over the summer."

Beckham's latest injury comes just over a year after breaking the metatarsal bone in his foot ahead of the World Cup.

Assalamualaikum ..

David Beckham has fractured a bone in his wrist, X-rays in South Africa have confirmed.

The England captain fell heavily in a challenge with Thabang Molefe and was in obvious discomfort as he continued briefly before being replaced by Jermaine Jenas.

He was immediately taken to hospital for X-rays which revealed he had fractured the scaphoid bone in his right wrist.

However, after the 2-1 victory, England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson insisted the injury would not prevent the Manchester United midfielder from flying out of South Africa with the rest of the squad.

Beckham is expected to see Manchester United doctors on his return to Old Trafford as he joins Wes Brown, Nicky Butt and Gary Neville on the injured list for both United and England.

`At this stage we are not sure of the extent of the injury and how long David will need treatment for,' said FA spokesman Adrian Bevington.

`It has been confirmed he has suffered a fractured scaphoid, which is a bone at the bottom of the thumb leading into the wrist bone.

`David will return to Manchester United for treatment and hopefully it can settle down quickly and he can have a good summer.

`The one bonus for David and England is that, if this was going to happen, David would have it happen at a time when he can't play in the next qualifier.

`But he is still hugely disappointed that such an injury has occurred - as we all are.'

Future prospects enhanced for Reds kids

Manchester United today unveiled their sixth link-up with an overseas football club.

The newly-announced "co-operation agreement" with Sporting Lisbon is designed to nurture young talent, widen the scouting net and may also involve player exchanges.

United have similar such agreements with Royal Antwerp of Belgium, Brommapojkarna of Sweden, Shelbourne of Ireland, Parramatta Melita Eagles of Australia and Oslo East of Norway.

John O'Shea, who burst onto the Old Trafford scene in such emphatic fashion this season, vouches for the success of the player exchange system. In season 2000/01 the 22-year-old Irishman spent three months with Belgian outfit Royal Antwerp.

The experience was an important part of O'Shea's education as a Manchester United youngster. He impressed immensely during his time in Belgium and United are now bearing the fruits of his labours, given the way he performed in this season, his first as a first-team regular.

O'Shea himself said of the experience: "I was fortunate because I played in virtually every game so it worked out very well for me and I got on very well with everyone over there.

"A lot of people said to me that when I came back they noticed a big change in my game so I was very happy with that. Getting that competitive game week in week out was important. It improves your concentration and your confidence as well," O'Shea added.

The new link-up with Sporting Lisbon will surely provide many other opportunities for potential first team United players.

What The Papers Say: Saturday 24 May

Ruud's so good he even scores when he f*rts
Ruud van Nistelrooy is so good he can score by 'f*rt power'. That is the hilarious verdict of Juventus ace Alessandro del Piero as he prepares to blow away AC Milan in Van Nistelrooy's own backyard next week. Del Piero exclusively told SunSport his verdict on the Manchester United striker, who hit an incredible 44 goals this season. He said: "What a player. Even when he f*rts he seems to score!" Del Piero, the most potent Italian striker of his generation, has studied Van Nistelrooy from afar and shakes his head in almost disbelief at the Dutchman's tally this last season. The Juve star said: "He has had an incredible season. To score 44 goals at the top level nowadays is something special. His qualities are extraordinary. We experienced it at first hand when he made one wonderful goal against us in the Champions League this year." But the prospect of linking up with Van Nistelrooy and joining Manchester United is not tempting enough for the Italy international. Del Piero said: "To be honest, a couple of years ago it might have been different because I thought about moving then. But, to be honest, I am glad I stayed in Turin."
Neil Custis, The Sun

Reds and Barca lead Cole chase
Joe Cole is the target of a bidding war between Barcelona and Manchester United - but they face competition from two more of Europe's leading clubs for the £8million-rated West Ham captain. The likelihood that Cole, 21, will not be with relegated Hammers for long after the transfer window opens on July 1 has increased within the last few days, with four major clubs tabling inquiries for the England midfielder. As well as United - whose manager Sir Alex Ferguson has publicly expressed his admiration for Cole - and Barca, both Chelsea and Valencia have been in touch with West Ham.
Tony Banks and Niall Hickman, Daily Express

Don't bend that, Becks
England skipper David Beckham flew home yesterday with his injured right arm in plaster. The 28-year-old midfielder gave fans a wave with the damaged arm after touching down at Luton airport. But he was careful not to bend it after breaking the scaphoid bone between his wrist and thumb during Thursday’s win over South Africa in Durban. He is expected to undergo further tests over the next few days. Meanwhile the Man United star’s London birthplace is being turned into a tourist shrine. The tribute, set up on a council website, charts the landmarks on his rise to fame. Among them are Whipps Cross Hospital in Waltham Forest, East London, where he was born on May 2, 1975, and the local sports centre where he played for an under-10s side.
Thomas Whitaker, The Sun

Becks is best
Eight members of England’s soccer squad failed to meet Nelson Mandela as they were tired after the flight to South Africa. Diddums. But David Beckham did and for all the talk of this being yet another photo opportunity, looked endearingly overawed and blushed when the great man asked him where Victoria was. This is where David scores over most other sportsmen - he hasn’t an arrogant bone in his body.
Lorraine Kelly, The Sun

Bet Direct out on a limb over Beckham
What is it with David Beckham and breaking bones at this time of the year? (His) run of bad luck has prompted Bet Direct to open a market on which one of his arms or legs he will break a bone in next season. It opened yesterday and will close on the same date next year. The odds are right leg 2/1, right arm 3/1, left arm 3/1, left leg 7/2.
Keith Nancarrow, The Sun

I'm so sorry I crocked you, Becks
The man who cracked David Beckham's thumb-bone is heartbroken - because he is a Manchester United fan. South Africa's hardman defender Thabang Molefe dreams of one day playing in the Premiership alongside the Old Trafford superstar. But now he is more concerned with making amends after his challenge injured the most famous player in football. Talking exclusively to SunSport, Molefe, 23, said: "I feel sorry for him. I only realised after the match that his thumb was broken. I tried to talk to him but the media were all around him. If I'd spoken to him I would have apologised. I am a United fan. Beckham is a very big player, one of the best in the world." Molefe is calling in a 'ju-ju' - Zulu medicine man - to make up for his tackle that led to the England skipper breaking his thumb-bone in Thursday's 2-1 victory.
Andrew Dillon, The Sun

Thumb thing special
It must have been something to meet the most famous person in the world. A man who has faced prejudice and hatred only to then become a statesman, a leader. Yes, Nelson Mandela must have felt truly blessed to finally meet David Beckham. So thrilled indeed that he shook his hand so hard it weakened the young Englishman's thumb ahead of his football match. Sitting next to him wearing a smile he held his hand while, off camera, they spoke intently. The conversation behind closed doors, however, was something only this column was privy too. Nelson: Pretoria is so beautiful. Becks: Yeh, thanks a lot. She looks a lot better since she's put a bit of weight back on. Nelson: The divide is one we had to overcome, you know Becks. Becks: I know, but now they are leaving Maine Road and going into a bigger stadium like ours things will be different.
Jimmy Greaves, The Sun

I'm the man to replace Becks
Frank Lampard will be handed the chance to prove there is England life beyond David Beckham - three months after he feared his international career might be dead and buried. The attention on Beckham's fractured scaphoid proved once again that the skipper's fame transcends his team and all sense of reality. After all, the injury was minor, damaging only Beckham's ability to shake hands and sign autographs until the middle of July - hardly career-threatening. But the real issue for Sven Goran Eriksson is who should replace the captain in the England midfield against Slovakia next month. Beckham's suspension from that game means the injury was of no relevance as Eriksson mulled over his other options.
Martin Lipton, Daily Mirror

David gets US thumbs-up
England skipper David Beckham has been given the green light to join Manchester United's high-profile trip to the United States this summer. Although the Old Trafford medical staff have yet to examine the fractured scaphoid Beckham suffered during England's 2-1 win over South Africa in Durban on Thursday, they are confident the midfielder will need to spend no more than eight weeks in plaster to make a full recovery. Even if that diagnosis proves incorrect, Beckham would still be able to play with a light cast on his arm, just as his former team-mate Eric Cantona did when he suffered the same injury - to the bone linking thumb and wrist - seven seasons ago.
David McDonnell, Daily Mirror

The air in United's changing room will turn blue if Fergie and Tim get going
The Manchester United dressing- room is about to get a new hair-dryer, and it will not be Sir Alex Ferguson pushing the buttons. Goalkeeping Tourette's sufferer extraordinaire Tim Howard is unlikely to utter a boo during a match, but before and after he will need to clear the decks in a way that will have even Fergie running for cover. But Sir Alex, whose own "hair-dryer" outbursts are legendary, has nothing to fear from his new signing. Indeed, the MetroStars superstar could turn out to be the best he has ever made, because Howard is probably a genius. That is the view of Britain's most celebrated sufferer of Tourette's Syndrome, John Davidson, the subject of two award-winning TV documentaries who claims that those afflicted can be freakishly gifted and urged Fergie not to hesitate in making Howard his man. Like Davidson, Howard was born with Tourette's, a neurological disorder characterised by, among other things, rapid and involuntary tics and vocal outbursts. Howard was named New York Life Humanitarian of the Year in 2001 for his role in raising awareness of TS and is a member of the board of the Tourette Association of New Jersey.
Kevin Garside, Daily Mirror

Ferdi is crocked
Sven Goran Eriksson risked opening another front in his battle with Sir Alex Ferguson after it emerged that Rio Ferdinand played against South Africa despite suffering from a long-term thigh problem. Manchester United boss Ferguson was sceptical about the value of England's 12,000-mile round trip to South Africa even before Eriksson and his squad set off. But the news that Ferdinand had played in the friendly after a scan on his thigh could be all the evidence Fergie needs that the club-versus-country dispute still rages.
Martin Lipton, Daily Mirror

Armani-clad, money-mad... Rio, you're sad
Rio Ferdinand believes he is worked far too hard. The scale of his toil is "laughable" he says, pointing out that due to the Euro qualifier against Slovakia on June 11, he will have barely a month off this summer before reporting back to Old Trafford for their tour of America. Ferdinand shows disgust for far-flung commercial trips without realising that this is what funds his outrageous income. He claims a lack of rest affects his concentration. But watching him play in Durban it didn't seem to be affected at all. He showed the same lack of concentration which helped Real Madrid knock United out of the Champions League, costing them millions.
Brian Reade, Daily Mirror

He asked for a bathroom. I'm sure he went to have a good cry
Specialists have not seen such a demand for their advisory services since the Manchester United star broke the fourth metatarsal in his left foot just before last year's World Cup. All agreed that the fracture of the scaphoid bone, which is shaped like a cashew nut, was a pretty common-or-garden occurrence to sportsmen falling to the ground, whether by witchcraft or not. They also concurred that poor Becks would be in pain, a belief confirmed by the radiographer who X-rayed the Beckham scaphoid at hospital in Durban. "The poor man was in such crippling pain," she told Sportsmail on condition of anonymity. "I could see the tears in his eyes. He asked for directions to the bathroom. I'm sure he went there to find a quiet place to have a good cry. He needed it."
Bill Mouland and Telford Vice, Daily Mail

Couple to star at MTV awards
Posh and Becks will hand out gongs at next Saturday's prestigious MTV Movie Awards bash in Los Angeles. The ceremony will boost their bid to become huge stars in America. A show insider said yesterday: "This is a major opportunity for them. They are famous the world over, except in the US. Being paraded on MTV as big stars is the perfect way to launch themselves in the States." The couple will hand out a new award, honouring stars who became big in Hollywood after crossing the pond.

Plonkers of the week
Eight of them this week - Gareth Southgate, Paul Scholes, Gareth Barry, Joe Cole, Danny Mills, Phil Neville, Steven Gerrard and Paul Robinson... the England footballers who decided to stay in bed and not make the effort to go and meet Nelson Mandela in South Africa. In years to come, maybe even days, they will regret the decision for the rest of their lives.
Brian Woolnough, Daily Star

United link up with Lisbon
Manchester United have agreed a formal link-up with Sporting Lisbon, which could also pave the way for 19-year-old winger Ricardo Quaresma to move to Old Trafford. The clubs will exchange players and scouting information and join together to develop talent.

Ronaldinho interested in United move

World Cup winner Ronaldinho would consider it a 'tremendous honour' to be the first Brazilian in history to play for Manchester United.

The man who ended England's dream in the 2002 World Cup finals with a free-kick that looped over goalkeeper David Seaman and earned Brazil a 2-1 victory at the quarter-final stage, believes joining Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford is a 'concrete possibility'.

His current club, Paris St Germain, may be willing to part with him for around £12million, and Ferguson could consider him the ideal partner for prolific Dutchman Ruud van Nistelrooy.

'Right now it's just speculation, right?' Ronaldinho told the Sunday Herald. 'But I would be lying if I said that English football isn't one of my ambitions.

'And the way things are looking right now, playing in the Premiership, at Manchester United in particular, is more than just a dream. It's a concrete possibility.

'But there is nothing more I can say. First of all, because nothing has been agreed and, second, because I am a PSG player and I have three years left on my contract.

'If PSG and United reach an agreement and everyone is happy with it, I'll be very proud to come. At the same time, I'm proud to play for PSG, our season is not over and I want to respect the club, my team-mates and the fans.

'What more can I say about Manchester United? Everyone knows how powerful and respected they are in every corner of the globe. It would be a tremendous honour to be the first Brazilian in history to play for them.'

The expectation levels at Old Trafford would not faze Ronaldinho, who would relish the chance to play for Ferguson.

He added: 'I imagine it to be a lot like playing for Brazil: you are expected to dominate every game, everybody wants to beat you and you have to prove yourself every day.

'When I think what it would be like to work with and learn from a master like Ferguson, I get goose bumps. We'll see what the future brings. I want to win trophies and grow as a footballer and obviously playing in England would be a major stepping stone.'

Ronaldinho is convinced he has the physical strength to succeed in the English top-flight, and wants to join the select band of Brazilians to have made an impact at that level in England.

'Some still say I'm still not strong enough to play in the Premiership. They're wrong. I can hold my own physically against anybody and it's all thanks to hard work.

'And I guess I'm attracted to it because few Brazilians have made their mark on English football. I talk to Gilberto Silva and Juninho often, they tell me about their life in the Premiership. And I think how wonderful it would be to be the first Brazilian to really become an important Premiership player.'

Manchester United release May

Manchester United have released defender David May after he made just 32 appearances in the last six seasons.

But the centre back insists he has no regrest about his time at Old Trafford.

The 32-year-old defender will end an association which began in 1994 when his contract expires next month, a period which has brought him five major winners' medals - including the Champions League, even if he has rarely been a regular in Sir Alex Ferguson's side.

And though he admits it has been a `rollercoaster ride', May would not have done anything differently even if he had known how it was going to turn out.

`I can't thank the manager enough for the opportunity he gave me when I signed from Blackburn Rovers,' May told the Manchester Evening News.

`I have won things at United that 98 percent of players have never won and 98 percent of players never will. It has been an absolute joy.

`I'd like to come back as a player and have one last go in front of the United fans but if not I still have some fantastic memories than no-one can take away from me.'

Having spent the last couple of seasons in the reserve team providing United's latest crop of young players with the benefit of his experience, May's long-term aim is to move into coaching.

However, he still feels he can hold down a place in the Premiership, although he admits there will be plenty of competition as the financial problems affecting the English game continue to take effect.

`Everything comes to an end,' said May, who made just four appearances this term.

`Even United's biggest legends have had to call it a day here sometime.

`The club have done well to stand by me and I have really enjoyed helping the younger lads at the club.

`That kind of work has ignited an idea in me to go coaching but first and foremost I want to carry on playing.

`Dropping down the divisions wouldn't bother me but it will be dog-eat-dog out there this summer because a lot of players will be in the same boat.

`I just hope potential buyers remember I have played at the highest level.'

What The Papers Say: Tuesday 27 May

Becks needs Italian job
Rui Costa believes it is time for David Beckham to up sticks and try a new footballing experience in Italy. The Portuguese star left Benfica to play in Italy nine years ago. The midfielder has not regretted a day of it, having played for both Fiorentina and now AC Milan, who he represents in tomorrow's European Cup final against Juventus. Costa believes Beckham would thrive in Serie A. He said: "A lot of players are used to only one way of playing and could not adapt to Italian football. But Beckham could do it very easily. He has such a sure touch and great ability to pass over long and short range - he would be perfect for Italian football. He also has a lot of experience, which is a key thing when you are moving from one big club to another one." AC Milan have been trying without success to tempt Beckham to the San Siro for the last three years.

Sam snub for David
Sam Hammam reckons David Beckham is too soft for his Cardiff revolution. The outspoken supremo believes Beckham's pop star image and his fancy Alice bands have no place in Wales. He said: "Beckham won't be coming to Wales, we don't like that sort down here."
Andrew Dillon, The Sun

Martin's a winner after all
Elation or despair, you're never in the slightest doubt which emotion is flooding the senses of Martin O'Neill. He's probably still shaking that head in disbelief this morning, striving to come to terms with the reality of life without a trophy on the green-and-white side of Glasgow. But the season when he won nothing could turn out to be the season that brought him everything. It offers him the chance to put himself even more firmly in line as No 1 candidate as Alex Ferguson's successor at Manchester United. In his first season O'Neill steered Celtic to a Treble. In his second he won back-to-back titles for the first time in years. This time he has won nothing. And there lies the challenge now facing the heir to the Old Trafford throne. He came south of Hadrian's Wall to put both Blackburn and Liverpool out of the UEFA Cup. If the Old Trafford hierarchy required confirmation O'Neill could handle the demands of Europe, he offered them irrefutable evidence. And he knows exactly what is required now. He has to do what Ferguson has just done: produce a triumphant team again from a dressing room occupied by players feeling sorry for themselves. Fergie showed how under-achieving multi-millionaires can be shaken from complacency and cajoled back to the work-ethic.
John Sadler, The Sun

Don't quit now Incey
Sir Jack Hayward marched on to the pitch after Wolves' play-off triumph and begged Paul Ince to stay. The veteran skipper's contract ends this summer. But the chairman, whose side beat Sheffield United 3-0 in yesterday's Division One final, believes 35-year-old Ince's experience and commitment will be vital in the Premiership. Hayward said: "I have too much enthusiasm for this club. When you're born 300 yards from the ground, you're a Molineux boy. That's why I asked Incey to stay. He said he'd think about it. Yes, I went overboard with the money I've spent but this has repaid all that. Dave Jones inspires the team. Now all we have to do is beat Manchester United 6-0 and then win the championship." Full-back Denis Irwin, 37, also faces an uncertain future. He admits even the prospect of a return to Old Trafford may not persuade him to play on. He said: "It's a young man's game now. I've always been a runner and I'm not sure if I can run any more."
Andrew Dillon, The Sun

Vieira wants fiver
Patrick Vieira wants a new five-year deal at Arsenal - and has vowed never to play for Manchester United. The Gunners skipper, 26, has just one year left on his current deal and will continue negotiations during the summer. But the French midfield star declared: "I really want to stay at Arsenal." Vieira, signed for £3.5million from AC Milan in 1996, has been a target for both United and Real Madrid. He added: "When I have to leave Arsenal I will go abroad. I don't see myself in Manchester."

Van Nistelrooy in boss plea

Ruud van Nistelrooy has called on Sir Alex Ferguson to extend his stay at Manchester United.
The prolific Dutch marksman, who scored 25 Premiership goals in United's surge to the title, is keen to see Ferguson remain in charge at Old Trafford.

Ferguson signed Van Nistelrooy for £18.5m from PSV Eindhoven after waiting a year for him to recover from a serious knee injury.

Speculation now suggests Ferguson could extend the three-year contract he signed at the end of last season after reversing his decision to retire.

United chief executive Peter Kenyon has already indicated the club would be willing to sanction such a move for the 61-year-old Scot.

And if he does sign a new deal, no-one would be more delighted than Van Nistelrooy, who is predicting a future ladened with success for the Red Devils.

"The manager will never lose his hunger and I think he will stay here for a long time," Van Nistelrooy told MUTV.

"He has been fantastic for this club and has won so many trophies with them.

"I am very grateful for what he did for me and to Manchester United for keeping their trust in me.

"It is fantastic to work with him and if we can all play at our top level we have some great years ahead of us."

Ferguson is already plotting for next season as United look to win the Champions League.

Brazilian star Ronaldinho, Leeds winger Harry Kewell and American goalkeeper Tim Howard have already been listed as possible summer signings, with a central defender and another goalkeeper also lined up.

"We have proved this season we can take on the best and win," said Van Nistelrooy.

"We have beaten Juventus twice and won against Real Madrid and Deportivo La Coruna.

"We now have to take that last step and improve a little bit more. The hardest bit is to go all the way and win the final.

"However, with the age and quality in the squad and the experienced we have gained over the last few years we can do better. If it all comes together for us we are capable of winning it."

Van Nistelrooy back to the future with Ferguson

MANCHESTER, (AFP) - Ruud van Nistelrooy does not believe anyone can replace Alex Ferguson as Manchester United manager in the forseeable future. The Dutchman, who topped the scoring charts with 25 goals this season to help Manchester overhaul Arsenal for the English Premiership, has urged United chief executive Peter Kenyon to give the 61-year-old Ferguson a long-term contract.
United finished without a trophy in 2002 but Ferguson landed his eighth English championship with an unstoppable late surge this year.

The talk is now of Ferguson extending the three-year contract he signed at the end of last season after reversing his decision to retire.

"The manager will never lose his hunger and I think he will stay here for a long time," van Nistelrooy told MU TV.

"He has been fantastic for this club and has won so many trophies with them."

Van Nistelrooy said he would forever be grateful to Ferguson for maintaining an interest in him after an initial move to Old Trafford collapsed amid fitness concerns.

Ferguson made his move once van Nistelrooy had recovered from his subsequent ruptured cruciate ligament injury, snapping the 26-year-old up for 18.5 million pounds from PSV Eindhoven.

"I am very grateful for what he did for me and to Manchester United for keeping their trust in me.

"It is fantastic to work with him and if we can all play at our top level we have some great years ahead of us."

Van Nistelrooy believes United are close to another Champions League success following their 1999 triumph.

United twice beat Juventus, favourites for Wednesday's final against AC Milan, in the second group stage, including a record 3-0 in Turin.

However, they came unstuck in the quarter-finals, bowing out 6-5 on aggregate to Real Madrid who in turn were then beaten by Juventus.

"We have proved this season we can take on the best and win," said van Nistelrooy.

"We have beaten Juventus twice and won against Real Madrid and Deportivo La Coruna.

"We now have to take that last step and improve a little bit more. The hardest bit is to go all the way and win the final.

"However, with the age and quality in the squad and the experienced we have gained over the last few years we can do better."

Beckham set for TV appeal

England captain David Beckham is to make a televised appeal warning the team could be thrown out of Euro 2004 if supporters continue to misbehave.
Beckham will appear on BBC1, ITV and Sky before Tuesday's friendly against Serbia and Montenegro to ask England supporters to avoid a repeat of the ugly scenes at the last international on home soil.

In April, the Euro 2004 qualifier against Turkey was marred by pitch invasions and disturbances outside the Stadium of Light in Sunderland.

After next week's match, England will host Slovakia at Middlesbrough's Riverside ground in another European Championships qualifier.

Beckham is concerned about the consequences should there be more trouble.

He said: "It shouldn't happen. If it does again we will be thrown out of Euro 2004.

"We have to be careful about our celebrations.

"I don't believe the players were responsible but we have to cut it down.

We have to celebrate in the middle of the pitch instead of by the corner flag. We want to stay in the competition."

FA spokesman Adrian Bevington said: "David regards this as hugely important and his message is directed at England fans everywhere.

"He knows the gravity of this situation.

"We, as a country, have had a very serious warning about our future conduct and no self-respecting fan wants the team playing behind closed doors or even being thrown out of a tournament."

Uefa confirmed on Wednesday, it would not hesitate to throw England out of the European Championships if supporters caused trouble.

Blanc bows out in style

Laurent Blanc bowed out in style this season, according to sone new Premiership statistics .

The retiring Frenchman boasted a higher success rate in passing (84%) and dribbling (100%) than any of his fellow Manchester United defenders, including £30 million new-boy Rio Ferdinand. However Rio still has plenty to be proud of following his first season at the club.

Rio won the highest percentage of tackles (86%) and made the highest number of clearances (277) for United in their Premiership-winning campaign. And like Blanc, Ferdinand was also very comfortable on the ball, successfully completing the vast majority of his passes (82%) and dribbles out of defence (94%). Further forward, he contributed only one cross - but at least it was an accurate one!

Meanwhile Mikael Silvestre proved to be United's best defender from an attacking point of view. He set up seven of United's 74 Premiership goals and became the only Reds defender to score in the Premiership this season when he netted the winner against Leeds in March.

However, Mikael may feel his crossing could improve. Only one in five of the Frenchman's crosses were accurate (21%), compared to almost one in three by his rival for the left-back berth John O'Shea (31%) and one in four by Gary Neville (27%) on the opposite flank.

No doubt Ferdinand, Silvestre and co will wait with interest this summer as Fergie shops for a new defender, to compensate for the injury to Wes Brown and the retirement of Laurent Blanc, United's pass-master and dribbler extraordinaire!
