Happy birthday Rubens Barrichello!
31 today! [23/05/03 ]

The Brazilian driver will be celebrating his 31st birthday today, a week ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix.

Rubens had one of the fastest climbs from karting to formula one than any other active driver. By the age of 17, he had 5 national karting titles, and promptly went on to win the GM Euroseries in the same year. Formula Three came next for him, where he won the title in 1991 for West Surrey Racing. He had less success the next year, when he tried Formula 3000, but he came third overall, and was ready for Formula One by his twenty-first birthday.

He made his Formula One debut in 1993, driving for Eddie Jordan, at the South African Grand Prix, where he qualified 14th, but the gearbox failed him on lap 31. He nearly finished in second place, behind his hero and countryman, Ayrton Senna, in only his third race, but fuel problems late in the race prevented this. In 1994, he claimed his first pole position, in the wet at Spa-Francorchamps, but sadly he spun off on lap 19.

That year did see him finish third at the Pacific Grand prix, as well as five other fourth positions. Mechanical failures plagued him in 1995, but the Canadian Grand Prix saw his first second place finish. He stayed with Jordan until the 97 season when he signed with Stewart, where he still remains, bringing home the teams only points when he came second in Monaco. 1998 showed another year without success, with fifth place finishes in Spain and Canada, 9 retirements, and an injury in the aborted start at the Belgian Grand Prix preventing him from restarting, saw him end the season in 12th position with 4 points.

In 1999 he partnered Johnny Herbert and after a very promising start to the season, the car failed on many occasions, but when it didn't. Rubens put in some strong performances, even taking pole position in a wet qualifying that took all the drivers by surprise. By mid season it was one of Formula Ones worst kept secrets that he was signing with Ferrari for the 2000 season in a basic swap with Eddie Irvine.

The 2000 season was one Rubens would never forget, the year beginning full of hope to fulfill his and his country's dreams of success. His first career victory at Hockenheim is one that will remain etched not just his but all Formula one fans memories for a lifetime, the tears flowing free and easy as he stood on the top step of the podium for the very first time. His efforts throughout the season helped Ferrari clinch victory in the constructor's championship while the Brazilian finished fourth overall in the drivers battle.

Although no further victories were forthcoming in 2001, Rubens battled it out for second place in the drivers championship with McLaren driver David Coulthard but failed to pass the Scot and was forced to settle for third. In 2002 another four wins came his way, the most notorious being the one at the USGP when together with teammate Michael Schumacher the duo attempted to create history by crossing the line with the smallest gap in F1 history. It didn't work out as planned however and Rubens took the victory away from Schumacher by a narrow margin instead.

After finishing second in the 2002 championship behind his Ferrari teammate, Rubens is once again full of hope and confidence in the 2003 season. To date he has secured 26 points and is third on the drivers ladder.

Barrichello shakes down fourth Ferrari

The Scuderia Ferrari team conducted the final piece of preparation work at their private testing track yesterday.

Under sunny skies and warm conditions, regular driver Rubens Barrichello took to the Fiorano circuit on Tuesday to complete the shake down of the fourth F2003-GA that is destined for use by the Italian squad at the forthcoming Monaco Grand Prix.

Rubens covered a total of 12 laps, three of which were on the short version of the track and the Brazilian’s best overall time of the day was 57”907.

Ferrari a victim of espionage !!

According to a German publication, some former Ferrari engineers are suspected by the Italian team of revealing secrets about the F2002, the car that gave Michael Schumacher its fifth world championship title last year.

The German magazine Auto, Motor und Sport mentioned that Ferrari are aiming at one particular technician that worked for a short time for Ferrari, Renault and McLaren. Confidential data was supposedly found in his computer.

According to the same German magazine, the Ferrari data was offered in exchange of a seven-figure number. British team Jaguar is said to have refused the offer.

Contacted by the magazine because of evident similarity between the latest F1 Toyota car and the F2002, the team manager Ove Andersson declared that : "At no time Toyota Motorsport was offered information regarding secret documents on the Ferrari car."

Ferrari spokesman Luca Colajanni mentioned to German information agency SID that these accusations were completely stupid.

Even if Ferrari is denying the rumour, it is a well-know fact that espionage is a reality in Formula One. Just like Jean Yanne used to say : "At a certain price, it is possible to buy anything."

Schumacher unfazed by new McLaren

Reigning world champion Michael Schumacher has dismissed McLaren's new car as "nothing special".
Schumacher is two points behind championship leader Kimi Raikkonen of McLaren but he has won both races since Ferrari introduced their new F2003-GA machine.

And he does not expect the new McLaren MP4-18 to knock Ferrari off their perch in the coming months.

"I am not dramatically worried about their new car," said Schumacher.

"We have such a masterpiece in our hands that I am sure it will survive the new McLaren.

"The races may be tighter, but that is not a worry for us.

"I do not think their car looks out of the ordinary. Looking at it, we are not saying 'Did we forget something on our car so that we should be worried?'

"I am sure they will work on its speed and reliability, but I know what we already have and we will be difficult to beat."

McLaren's David Coulthard admitted the new car, which had reliability problems during a three-day shakedown in France, was not yet a world beater.

"You would hope that any new car would go onto the track and be three seconds quicker than anyone else - then you would just polish it and take it to the next Grand Prix," he said.

"But that is fantasy rather than reality and it will be ready when it is ready, and then we will take it racing and hope to get some results.

"The Ferrari looked strong in Austria, but it didn't look quite so strong in Barcelona.

"I think what you are seeing is a variation circuit to circuit in terms of the tyre performance."

Ferrari set Monaco standard

World champion Michael Schumacher has set the pace in first qualifying for the Monaco Grand Prix, handing himself a sizeable advantage for final qualifying on Saturday.
The Ferrari driver flew round in a time of one minute 16.305 seconds and will be the last to run in Saturday's session, when track conditions should be at their fastest.

His Ferrari team-mate, Rubens Barrichello, was second, 0.3secs behind the German, with Englishman Jenson Button in an impressive third place for BAR.

Championship leader Kimi Raikkonen and Trulli's team-mate Fernando Alonso were well off the pace. The Finn could set only 11th fastest time while Spaniard Alonso was 14th.

McLaren boss Ron Dennis said both drivers had done conservative laps and blamed a "calculated risk with the set-up of the car, which proved wrong" for Raikkonen's performance.

One-lap specialist Jarno Trulli was fourth in his Renault, with David Coulthard fifth and Ralf Schumacher sixth.

Jordan driver Giancarlo Fisichella was seventh, splitting the younger Schumacher from team-mate Juan Pablo Montoya.

The lower down the order a driver is on Thursday, the more of a struggle he faces on Saturday.

The field is run in reverse order in final qualifying and Schumacher's fastest time means he will also have the advantage of knowing exactly what time will be required to start at the front of the grid.

The unique nature of the Monaco street circuit means it is very difficult to overtake, making it more vital than usual to qualify as far up the grid as possible.

Schumacher said: "I am happy with my time this afternoon because the track was quite slippery as I was only the second car to run.

"It is always difficult to predict what can happen here in Monaco but we can be confident the rest of the weekend as the car is working well."

Jaguar driver Mark Webber had set the fastest time in Thursday morning's practice session but his qualifying attempt was ruined when Heinz-Harald Frentzen suffered an engine failure in his Sauber and dumped oil on to the track.

The session was stopped for 25 minutes while marshals attempted to clear up the mess, but the cement dust used to clean up the oil made the track slippery for the rest of the session.

Webber could only manage ninth place, more than 1.5secs slower than he had lapped in the morning session.

Button's performance continued the upturn in his fortunes this season and puts him in a strong position for a good result in Monaco.

"It wasn't too bad," he said of his lap. "I'm pretty happy with it. It's always a little manic around here but the car was set-up well.

"This is the way it should be for me. I am not dreaming about anything at the moment apart from going fast in Sunday's race.

"I didn't expect to be this quick but it could have been even faster as I lost a couple of tenths at the last corner because of graining on the tyres.

"But I am very, very happy with today's performance. It is only pre-qualifying but at least we know we can be competitive as everybody was running low fuel.

"It also gives us an advantage for Saturday's qualifying because the early runners will struggle."

Englishmen Ralph Firman and Justin Wilson were 13th and 17th for Jordan and Minardi on the Grand Prix debuts at the track.

Toyota had a nightmare, bringing up the rear behind both Minardis.

"I am really disappointed with the start of this weekend," said Toyota driver Olivier Panis, wh won at Monaco with Ligier in 1996. "We were simply uncompetitive."

Ferrari 'want Montoya'

Ferrari have identified Juan Pablo Montoya as the man they want to replace Michael Schumacher in 2005 if the German quits the team.

According to Italy's Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper, Ferrari do not yet know whether the 34-year-old world champion wants to stay on in F1 or retire when his contract ends at the end of 2004.

Ferrari have already approached Montoya about a possible switch in the event that Schumacher does retire or - and this is extremely unlikely - he joins another team.

Gerhard Berger, motorsport director of Williams' engine supplier BMW, confirmed Ferrari's interest in Montoya but said Williams would do everything they could to hang on to him.

Montoya, whose Williams contract ends at the same time as Schumacher's, was made aware of Ferrari's renewed interest in him at the weekend.

"Someone told me to look at the Gazzetta dello Sport and see what's in it," said the Colombian, who won Sunday's Monaco Grand Prix.

"I had a look and I couldn't believe it. There's no talk for the moment, to be honest, there is nothing."

This is not the first time Ferrari have approached Montoya.

The BBC Sport website revealed that Ferrari also made contact with him early in 2002, also with a view to replacing Schumacher when the German left.

Although Ferrari are the strongest team in F1 at the moment, an offer to move there after Schumacher's departure is not as appealing as it first might seem.

The team has been built up around the German and the leading personnel would be expected to follow him out of the door if he left.

Ferrari would not collapse without technical director Ross Brawn, chief designer Rory Byrne and sporting director Jean Todt, but they might well be weakened.

Ferrari are also said by Gazzetta to be considering replacing Rubens Barrichello as Schumacher's team-mate for 2004, even though the Brazilian's contract has another year to run.

The report says test driver Felipe Massa could be promoted, with Barrichello switching to Sauber, who use Ferrari customer engines.

Barrichello has produced some lacklustre performances this season and could only manage eighth place at Monaco.

Montoya waits on Schumi

Michael Schumacher may quit Formula One before his Ferrari contract expires in 2006 if he stops winning.
Ferrari announced on Monday that the 34-year-old German had extended his contract by a further two years.

But Montoya, who is favourite to replace the five times world champion when he decides to retire, says Schumacher will not necessarily fulfil his contract.

"If he's not winning, he'll probably retire before (2006)," the Williams driver said ahead of Sunday's Canadian Grand Prix.

"At the moment for him to make a decision and stay winning is not as difficult as if suddenly Ferrari starts to struggle. I think everything could change.

"I don't know Michael, so I don't know, but I'd be surprised if he's not winning if he stays more years, it wouldn't look that good."

Schumacher, the most successful driver in Ferrari's history, is four points behind McLaren's Finnish driver Kimi Raikkonen in this season's championship.

He has been world champion for three consecutive seasons.

But Montoya, winner of the Monaco Grand Prix two weeks ago, shrugged off the prospect of having Schumacher as a rival for a few more years.

"It won't change anything. He's there, you've got to try to beat him," he said. "If he's not there, you've got to try to beat somebody else.

"They've had big difference in cars in the last few years, this year it's been getting a lot closer.

"He's not winning races as easily as before and he's not even leading the championship at the moment."

Canadian Jacques Villeneuve, the only other champion remaining on the grid, said he was not surprised that Schumacher had decided to stay on.

"You retire if nobody wants you and you can't earn a living any more or if you are heading out and you are not winning races," said the BAR driver, whose own future remains uncertain.

"He's in a team where he wins races and he makes loads of money so why should he retire?"
