20/05/2003 ~ McLaren's new MP4-18 will be on track ~

McLaren Mercedes MP4-18 Formula One car will make its testing debut on Wednesday 21st May 2003 at the Paul Ricard circuit, in the South of France.

Third Driver Alexander Wurz will drive the MP4-18 during the course of the three-day test session. The details of the race introduction of the new car will be confirmed at a later date once the car has fulfilled the team's expectations with regard to reliability and speed.

The Paul Ricard test will also see West McLaren Mercedes drivers David Coulthard and Kimi Raikkonen continue the development of the 17-D together with test driver Pedro de la Rosa.

The MP4-18 incorporates a number of visible differences. These include a shorter and lower nose, a more tightly packaged rear and a slight dorsal fin shaping to the engine cover. In addition the new Mercedes-Benz engine, the FO 110P V10, has been lowered within the car, producing centre of gravity benefits.

The MP4-18's programme at the Paul Ricard test will see the team focusing on systems, aerodynamic and components evaluation. After the first test, the McLaren Mercedes team will continue the car's development schedule and once the initial programme has been completed, David Coulthard and Kimi Raikkonen will take over.

The MP4- 18 is the first car designed specifically to maximise the performance of the Michelin tyres.

The MP4-18 is generally much smaller than its predecessor.

A surprising points system

By winning three out of six races since the beginning of the 2003 World Championship while no other driver has won more than once this year, Michael Schumacher could be considered the best driver this year. Even if this is what some people think, the championship standings are telling another story, the German only second behind Kimi Raikkonen after 6 races.

The new FIA points system is helping the ones who favour consistency over those aiming to win. The result : the Finn is the 2003 championship leader even if he has been dominated by the five-time world champion! The proof comes from numbers: Michael Schumacher has 3 wins, 4 pole positions and 3 fastest laps compared with 1 win and 1 fastest lap for Raikkonen. It is true that the fastest lap in the race is not always a clear indication of the drivers' performance since the number of pit stops in the race has a big influence on lap times. For a fact, Schumacher did 3 pit stops at Imola versus 2 for Raikkonen. On the other hand both drivers were pushing to the maximum on nearly empty tanks at the end of their runs just before going to the pits.

FIA wanted to avoid seeing a driver winning the championship too early in the season, which never helps television audience numbers and spectator presence at the circuits. But is it any better if this new rule allows a less competitive driver that is more consistent to win the crown over the flat-out fastest ?

The other goal of the FIA with its new points system was to help the small teams score points on a more regular basis. The target has been reached : 16 drivers and 9 teams have scored points in 2003 after 6 races while last year the number was 14 drivers and 9 teams in last year's championship after the first 6 races, even if there was one more team last year taking part in the championship. In other terms, 90% of the teams and 80% of the drivers scored points this year, compared with 82% and 63% last year.

The solution for a better system may come from the United States in the Champ Car series, where the top 10 drivers earn points in every race. The win is good for 20 points, while second place brings 15 points and the pole position and fastest lap in the race also add to the drivers's score. The FIA is not interested to make such a radical change because they are afraid it may bring another problem. It would become impossible to compare the drivers from one generation to another if the points system becomes too different. Even this year's changes to the system are more important than they may seem: in 2002, the number of points attributed after each race was 26 while this year it is 39... an increase of 50% !
If history is supposed to help prepare the future, the FIA should learn something from this...

The MP4-18A features a number of radical design features

*It has a shorter, lower, thinner and more sculpted nose section, with a dramatically shaped front wing.

*The rear end is very tightly packaged with bodywork tucked in around the engine and gearbox for improved aerodynamics.

*There is a thinner engine cover, which has a slight dorsal fin appearance.

*The new Mercedes V10 engine is not only sited lower in the car for a lower centre of gravity, it is also reputed to be the lightest power unit in F1 at a little over 90kg.

*The MP4-18 is the first car designed specifically to maximise the performance of the Michelin tyres, and it has also been exclusively aerodynamically designed in Mclaren wind tunnel at the McLaren Technology Centre.

Wurz thrilled with MP4-18’s debut run

McLaren Mercedes driver Kimi Raikkonen set the fastest time during Wednesday’s testing session at the Paul Ricard circuit, however, the one getting all the attention was third driver, Alexander Wurz, who was honoured with the job of putting the new MP4- 18 through its paces.

The Woking squad’s new 2003 contender completed a total of 17 laps on its initial outing, an outing that has been described as more of a shakedown and systems check with no real emphasis placed on lap times.

Alex will be solely responsible for work on the new car this week while Kimi and David continue Monaco GP preparations in the MP4-17D. However, it shouldn’t be too long before the team’s two regular drivers get behind the wheel and start putting in some serious mileage.

The new McLaren gets in the rhythm [23/05/2003]

Today was the fourth and last day of testing at the Paul Ricard circuit, the teams deciding to use the 3B track that offers long straights and tight corners, perfectly suited to prepare the Canadian Grand Prix.

Juan-Pablo Montoya was once again the fastest driver on the circuit but the surprise came from the new McLaren MP4/18, who ended the day with the second fastest time. Alexander Wurz was able to make his best lap at the end of the day, showing that the new car has a good potential.

New MP4-18 gives McLaren hope

McLaren driver David Coulthard has already speculated that he could possibly be in control of the Woking squad’s new 2003 contender, the MP4-18 at the European Grand Prix, and now managing director, Martin Whitmarsh, has confirmed the Scot’s thoughts.

However, at this stage it is still just an educated guess that the new challenger will race at the Nurburgring, home to Mercedes, and a definite date will be announced closer to the time.

“There is a target to go racing at the European Grand Prix but we will manage the risk by making the decision nearer the date," he admitted to the BBC.

The MP4-18 made it’s testing debut at the Paul Ricard circuit on Wednesday, with third driver Alex Wurz putting it through some initial shakedown laps. There have been a few early teething problems, nothing of any major concern at all and Whitmarsh is confident that once it’s introduced in race conditions, their drivers will be ready to challenge their rivals at Ferrari.

"Whilst their new car is clearly a very, very good car, it hasn't moved the game on significantly as far as we can see so far," he said of the new F2003-GA. "Maybe in two races it's too early to say but it certainly doesn't appear to have been a big jump forward. We've got every expectation that we can make a step. We aim to give them a fight this year. Hopefully we can prevail. If we don't then we're going to be even stronger next year.”

During the new car’s third day at Paul Ricard this week, Alex Wurz recorded the second best time of the day, behind the Williams of Juan-Pablo Montoya. The Austrian driver recorded his best overall time at the end of the day, showing that the potential is definitely there for the new contender.

BMW engine stronger than ever

Despite the fact that Juan Pablo Montoya was forced to retire from the lead of the Austrian Grand Prix a week ago, his BMW engine failing for the first time this season, the German engine manufacturers are unconcerned that a repeat may be forthcoming in Monaco next weekend.

Juan Pablo had secured the lead of the race after Ferrari ace Michael Schumacher suffered a fire in pitlane and the possibility that the Colombian would secure the team’s first win of the season looked good.

However, problems arose when a valve which limits water pressure was not operating correctly before the race even began that saw the cooling system continuously losing water but BMW’s Mario Theissen is confident that the P83 engine is stronger than ever.

Ralf open to McLaren offer

After speculation of a move to Panasonic Toyota, Willi Weber, manager of BMW WilliamsF1 driver Ralf Schumacher, has now revealed that his client is more than open to an offer from the Mercedes McLaren team, if they express an interest in the young German’s services future after his contract with Williams comes to a close at the end of 2004.

“Nothing speaks against it (a move to McLaren),” Weber revealed in an interview with the Stuttgarter Nachrichten daily. “If Norbert (Haug, Motorsport director at Mercedes) calls, we will sit down and talk immediately.”

However, with that said, Weber would prefer to see his young charge remain at the BMW squad where he has been since the start of 1999 season. This season he is the only driver to finish each of the six races in a points scoring position however wins and podiums are very elusive. According to Weber, BMW should be having a bigger say in the team to held provide his driver with a winning package….

“Year after year there is the hope that there will be a car which can win the world title. BMW should have a bigger say within the team. A company with an army of experts must work closer together with Frank Williams’ small group of specialists and gain more influence,” he said.

Coulthard needs to improve says Watson

Former McLaren driver John Watson has warned David Coulthard to get his act together and start performing consistently or risk losing his drive with the Woking based squad.

David started the 2003 season off well with a win in the season opening Australian Grand prix, however since the Scot has since dropped down to fifth place on the drivers ladder, seventeen points behind his younger and less experienced teammate, Kimi Raikkonen.

Several members of the F1 fraternity have also stated that the young Finn is definitely getting the better of David this season, and Watson believes that this scenario could see Coulthard dropped from the team where he has resided for the past eight years.

The next round on the calendar is the Monaco Grand Prix, an event David won for McLaren last season, the team’s one and only victory of the year. With a strong possibility that he may repeat the performance here next Sunday, Watson believes that consistency is the key to David keeping his job.

It was only recently that Willi Weber, manager of the Schumacher brothers, revealed that Ralf would be more than open to a call from Mercedes about a future position, but Watson can’t see any real candidate for the Scots seat, apart from maybe Jaguar’s Mark Webber, but the Australian has just signed a new deal with the Milton Keyes based squad through to 2005.

New engine configuration for Renault in 2004

Renault has made it official : it will not use the "wide angle" 111° engine configuration for its new 2004 engine. The new V10 will be more conventional with its "V" angle, going back to the traditional 90° configuration.

That is what Flavio Briatore announced today, which was not a big surprise considering that Jean-Jacques His, who was in charge of the wide angle V10 engine project, left the French team one month ago.

After a difficult period at the start of the project, His was then convinced about the advantages of this revolutionary engine, mainly because of a lower centre of gravity even if the engine was down on horsepower compared with its main rivals BMW, Mercedes and Ferrari.

About 20 horsepower were added fifteen days ago in Austria and another 20 horsepower should be there in time for Canada in mid-June but the progress was not sufficient enough for Flavio Briatore.

Also because of the new engine regulation for next year that sets a limit to one engine per car for a whole Grand Prix weekend (including all practice and qualifying sessions and the race), Renault had to make a choice for the future.

While maintaining the 2003 engine's evolution programme alive under Jean-Philippe Mercier's control, Renault will start the 2004 engine project - named RS24 - with Leon Taillieu as chief designer. "Our objective is that it will be in place in mid- January 2004." concluded Flavio Briatore

Coulthard aiming for Monaco hat trick

Team McLaren Mercedes' most recent win at the circuit was last year when David Coulthard drove a fine race to take the chequered flag and silverware. Now after a recent run of bad luck, the Scot is hoping to make Sunday’s event a hat trick of wins around the tight and twisty streets.

The 2003 Monaco Grand Prix will also mark McLaren's 550th Grand Prix and they will kick the weekend off with Kimi Raikkonen still leading the Drivers' standings on 40 points. The young Finn is not too concerned about Michael Schumacher reducing his gap to a mere two points and a win here on Sunday will help put him in an even stronger position.

Bahrain busy converting tracts of sand

The Gulf kingdom of Bahrain is busy building a 150-million-dollar race track with the aim of hosting a Formula One Grand Prix in 2004.

Work on the circuit at Sakhir, 30 kilometres (20 miles) from Manama, started last November and some 1,500 labourers are toiling day and night to secure its completion by March next year.

Bahrain signed a long-term agreement in September 2001 with F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone to host a grand prix from the 2004 season. The Bahrain leg of the world championship will be replacing one of the current venues with Spa in Belgium most under threat. A popular circuit with drivers, Spa's future is however uncertain owing to the Belgian government's desire to clamp down on tobacco advertising.

Bahrain by contrast has no such qualms about cars carrying tobacco advertising. The San Marino Grand Prix could also be a casualty as Italy has two races on the schedule. Given the high summer temperatures Bahrain is looking at slotting into the calendar at the very start or the end of the season.

Sheikh Fawaz said the BRCC had named Austrian Hans Geist as the circuit director. "Geist headed the Circuit A1 Ring at Spielberg for eight years and supervised several Formula 1 races in his country," he said.

Geist said he expected more than 40,000 spectators during the first race, which he said would have "positive fallout on Bahrain's economy."

Bahraini officials are pinning their hopes on attracting up to 70,000 in the future thanks to temporary grandstands that will be erected. German consultancy Tilke has designed the venue, which will have three circuits, a drag track and a main grandstand capable of holding 11,000 spectators.

The 5.2-kilometre (3.25-mile) circuit will have an estimated lap time for a Formula One car of 1 minute 35 seconds, and an average speed of 196 kilometres per hour (122.5 miles per hour). The circuit is reminiscent of Sepang in Malaysia, even it will be surrounded by a 10-metre (33-foot) wall to keep out the sand.

Ferrari announced today (Wednesday) that former Renault engine guru, Jean-Jacques His, would be joining them in June.

His revealed he would be leaving Renault at the end of this month after failing to agree with team boss Flavio Briatore about the team's future (see separate story). His was the driving force behind the French team's wide-angle V10 engine.

Renault subsequently announced that they would be scrapping the 110-degree engine next season, and would instead be taking a more conventional approach with their engine . His will not be without a job for very long, in fact just two days, as he will be joining Ferrari this coming Tuesday.

A Ferrari statement read: "The Ferrari Maserati Group today announced that, effect from June 3rd 2003, Jean-Jacques His will be in charge of the Granturismo Engine Department for the development of engines destined to the road-going cars."
