Confusion over Becks future

Confusion reigns over which club - in which country - David Beckham will be playing for next season.

AC Milan, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Roma have all been linked with moves for the England captain this summer, with Milan's chief executive Adriano Galliani confirming that, "we are very much interested in Beckham. He has two years left on his contract but we're working on that."

That's in the Daily Star, anyway. The Daily Mirror claim that the San Siro outfit have already pulled out of negotiations, saying that David would be too expensive. The same goes for Barcelona, claims the tabloid. That squares with Barca manager Raddy Antic's quote that "so far they are rumours and nothing else."

But that didn't stop Sven Goran Eriksson stating that it wouldn't be a problem for him if David were to move abroad. "It doesn't matter where he plays, he won't become worse as a footballer if he moves on," said Sven.

Some Sunday newspapers claimed that a £30 million fee had been agreed with Barcelona, while others insisted that Milan would make a £25 million bid any day now.

However Galliani, quoted in the Gazzetta della Sport, seems to contradict his words in other newspapers, stating: "There is a problem that today would lead me to say that David would not come to Milan."

"His personal sponsor, Vodafone, is a competitor of Milan's sponsor Tim. He has a two-year contract left, in other words it is difficult."

The most important person in all this - David himself - has expressed his intention to stay at United next season - and has spoken about how much he is looking forward to visiting America with the team on their pre-season US Tour.

Not that that will stop the tabloids from speculating.

United star Butt arrested

England and Manchester United star Nicky Butt has been arrested by police over an alleged nightclub assault.
Police confirmed the 28-year-old player had been questioned following the allegations that were made by a woman.

Butt was arrested when he turned up at Wilmslow police station with his solicitor.

Cheshire Constabulary confirmed on Monday night a 28-year-old man, from Hale, Cheshire, had been arrested.

The Manchester United midfielder was then released on bail without charge, pending further inquiries.

A complaint of assault was made on Sunday, 4 May, following an incident at Brasingamen's nightclub in Alderley Edge, Cheshire.

Barcelona in Becks talks

MANCHESTER UNITED have begun talks with Barcelona over the sale of David Beckham.

United chief executive Peter Kenyon has met a representative of Barca's new president-elect to hear details of their £30million bid.

Beckham will have the final say, but it is clear United are now ready to cash in on one of the biggest stars in the world game.

Joan Laporta is clear favourite to be voted in as Nou Camp president - and has promised to deliver Becks as a reward.

The £30m fee will be underwritten by his own family's fortune.

Laporta's representative, Sandro Rosell, met yesterday with Kenyon in London - though United would not confirm the meeting took place.

Beckham said in May he wanted to remain at Old Trafford. Kenyon also said the club wanted to keep Becks - but made it clear they would listen to any offers that matched their own valuation of the England captain.

Barca are the first club to make a positive move - Real Madrid will decide their position once the Spanish domestic season has ended.

Barcelona in Beckham talks

Manchester United have admitted they are in contact with Barcelona about the possible sale of David Beckham..

Old Trafford's chief executive Peter Kenyon met with Sandro Rosell, a representative of Barcelona's new president-elect, Joan Laporta, in London on Tuesday.

The two discussed details of the Spanish club's proposed £30m summer bid.

Rosell also spoke to Beckham's own represenatives.

Kenyon had hoped to keep the discussions confidential but admitted he had been in talks before he flew back to Manchester.

"I don't want to confirm anything. But given that it has come out in Spain, I don't think you would be stupid writing it," he said.

Laporta has promised to sign Beckham, but the midfielder has maintained that he wants to stay at Old Trafford.

The Catalan giants cannot make a firm bid for Beckham until the new club president is unveiled after the club's elections on 15 June.

Vidic boosts Man Utd hope

Serbia & Montenegro defender Nemanja Vidic has admitted to being "flattered" by Manchester United's reported interest in him.

The 21-year-old centre-half has been linked with a move to Old Trafford, with Red Star Belgrade claiming earlier in the season that United had enquired about a possible deal.

And Sir Alex Ferguson was said to be ready to run the rule over Vidic against England in the friendly at the Walkers Stadium.

The promising Vidic produced a solid defensive display against Sven-Goran Eriksson's men.

And despite conceding the free-kick from which Joe Cole scored the winner in England's 2-1 victory, Vidic showed why several leading European clubs are keen to sign him.

"I think it is always flattering to be linked with a club such as Manchester United," he told BBC Sport.

"I have read the about their interest in several newspapers, and as far as I know they have not made a concrete offer for me.

"I am flattered, but I cannot really think about it until such time when and if United make a firm bid to Red Star Belgrade.

"If that happened, obviously I would be delighted.

"I am still a Red Star player, but if they wanted to sell me then that would be their decision - it's not down to me.

"I would love to play in the Premiership, especially after the experience of this evening.

The crowd was fantastic and it would be great to play in the Premiership where there are so many great games."

Vidic has steadily enhanced his reputation as one of Serbia & Montenegro's rising stars, with coach Dejan Savicevic quick to promote him to the senior set-up.

Serbia & Montenegro face Finland in their next Euro 2004 qualifier, and Vidic insisted the friendly against England had proved a useful exercise.

"I thought England played well against us, but we performed well too," he added.

"Although I am disappointed to have committed the foul that resulted in the winning free-kick, I felt we deserved at least a draw."

Butcher backs Neville

England won against Serbia & Montenegro and Phil Neville certainly did his international credentials the power of good.

I think he should start against Slovakia in that holding midfield role.

I thought Steven Gerrard and Neville were England's best players on the night.

It's also good to see people like Joe Cole, Jermaine Jenas, Darius Vassell, Owen Hargreaves and Wayne Rooney coming on.

These are good young English players.

It is difficult when you are playing a specific system to come on in a full international and make an impact but it is good experience for them, even if it is for only 20 minutes.

I would like them to be given about 70 to 80 minutes, which we used to have as international players, because the more you play the more you learn.

Hargreaves excites me because he's energetic.

He can run with the ball, pass it and venture forward past opposition attackers. There are undoubtedly plenty knocking on the door for places.

Cole has come on and he has certainly staked his claim for a place with that wonderful free-kick which won England the game.

And I thought Matthew Upson, making his full debut, did okay.

I was just a little disappointed with the equaliser because he and Gareth Southgate seemed to get in a tangle with the movement of the Serbia forwards.

But, generally, I thought he did very well. He covered well and used the ball well when he had to.

I think Upson can be pleased with his performance and he formed the basis of a good partnership with Southgate.

With Gerrard in midfield as well as Owen and Rooney up front England look a good team - as the game with Turkey illustrated.

It's great to have Emile Heskey there as an alternative, but to beat Slovakia in the Euro 2004 qualifier next week the partnership with Rooney and Owen is a must.

Roche released

United have announced that young defender Lee Roche is one of five players not to be offered new contracts.

Roche joins David May, John Rankin, John Cogger and Kalam Mooniaruck in leaving Old Trafford, despite being named Wrexham's Young Player of the Year after a loan spell at the Racecourse Ground in 2001/02.

22-year-old Lee made his first team debut for United on 5 November 2001, when he started at right-back in the Worthington Cup third round defeat at Arsenal. Despite making 20 appearances for the Reserves he made just one start in the Champions League and one substitute appearance in the Premiership in 2002/03.

David May made two starts in the Worthington Cup and came off the bench once each in the Premiership and Champions League to make total of 188 appearances during his Old Trafford career. He scored eight goals after joining United for £1.2 million from Blackburn Rovers in 1994.

Glasgow-born full-back John Rankin signed professional terms in June 2000 and broke into the Reserves in the 2002/03 season, making eleven appearances. He has agreed terms with Scottish First Division outfit Ross County.

Under-19 stars John Cogger and Kalam Mooniaruck, who both signed for United in July 2000, have also been let go after failing to make their mark on the Reserve team. Cogger made just one start for Ricky Sbragia in 2002/03, while Mooniaruck played seven time.

Best of luck to all the lads in the future.

Phil captains England

International friendly
England 2
Serbia-Montenegro 1

Phil Neville and Paul Scholes were the only two United stars to start England's 2-1 friendly victory over Serbia and Montenegro at Leicester's Walkers Stadium on Tuesday night - but Phil did captain the side in the second half.

With Gary Neville, David Beckham, Rio Ferdinand, Wes Brown and Nicky Butt all out injured, Phil won his 39th cap and partnered Paul in the centre of midfield in the warm-up to next week's Euro 2004 qualifier against Slovakia.

And it was Scholesy who started the move for England's opening goal midway through the first half. He played in Steven Gerrard, who played a neat one-two with his Liverpool colleague and temporary England captain Michael Owen before rifling home to give Sven's men the lead.

The half was played at friendly pace, with very few chances being made by either side. But on the stroke of half-time, the visitors levelled with Nenad Jestrovic poking home after a goalmouth scramble followed their late corner.

Paul was withdrawn at half-time to be replaced by Newcastle's Jermaine Jenas, but Phil stayed on in the holding role in midfield he'd performed to great effect in the first period.

A second raft of changes on the hour mark saw stand-in skipper Emile Heskey hand the captain's armband he'd been given by the departing Michael Owen to Phil Neville - who became the second United man to captain his country this year.

The match was threatening to peter out to a disappointing draw, but with eight minutes to go a thumping Joe Cole free-kick from outside the area won the match for England - David Beckham eat your heart out.

Phil almost became the only outfield man to play the full ninety minutes, but he was withdrawn in favour of Southampton's James Beattie with two minutes left to go.

In the end it was a good night for England - and a proud one for the Neville family.

England: James; A Cole (Bridge 46), Southgate (Terry 60), Upson (Barry 85), Mills (Carragher 60); Gerrard (Jenas 46), P Neville (Beattie 88), Scholes (Hargreaves 46), Lampard (J Cole 60); Owen (Rooney 46), Heskey (Vassell 60).

Reds targets stay put

Real Sociedad and Paris St Germain have warned Manchester United to stay away from their prized assets.

Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted that Sociedad's Xabi Alonso and PSG's Ronaldinho are at the top of his summer shopping list, but officials from both continental clubs have told the Scot to look elsewhere to spend his transfer kitty.

"When I arrive at a club I decide who leaves and who stays," said new PSG coach Vahid Halilhodizic on Tuesday.

"Whether it's Pele, Maradona or Ronaldinho, I'm the one who takes the decision. I always have the final word. And I will do everything, absolutely everything, to get Ronaldinho to stay."

New club president Francis Graille added: "I refused to meet Peter Kenyon because that would have been seen as the first step in Ronaldinho's transfer from PSG. Let me make this clear: Our priority is holding on to Ronaldinho."

Real Sociedad, meanwhile, say that they haven't had any official offer from United - or rivals Real Madrid.

"There has been nothing,'' Sociedad spokesman Jose Luis Barrenetxea told Spanish newspaper AS.

"There have been some rumours as a consequence of the team's great run but the club has not received any contact regarding the player.''

And the player himself says that he's happy to stay at Sociedad, who are battling to win La Liga ahead of Madrid.

"I don't know anything about any interest from any team,'' said the 21-year-old who has made 31 appearances so far this season.

"They are just rumours but for the time being I am happy in Spain.''

Ex-Reds search for clubs

Teddy Sheringham leads the list of former United players to be released by their current clubs at the end of the 2002/03 season.

Spurs did not offer Treble-winning Teddy a new contract, and he joins eight other ex-Reds who are looking for clubs following the biggest end-of-season release of players ever seen.

Fellow Treble heroes Henning Berg, Jesper Blomqvist and Raimond van der Gouw - with exactly 200 United appearances between them - have been let go by Blackburn Rovers, Charlton Athletic and West Ham respectively.

Graeme Souness has also let Northern Ireland international Keith Gillespie leave Ewood Park, while his fellow Old Trafford youth team graduates Ben Thornley and John O'Kane have left Blackpool as their contracts have expired.

Gary Walsh and Colin Murdock, who also came through the ranks at United, have been released by Bradford City and Preston North End.

Good luck with the search for new clubs, lads.

Amoruso claims Reds interest

Glasgow Rangers' Italian defender Lorenzo Amoruso says that United have joined the chase to sign him.

Blackburn Rovers are believed to have tabled a bid for the centre-back who is quitting Ibrox this summer. But now the player says that United - and Arsenal - are also keen on his signature.

"Yes, it's true, I have been told that both of these clubs are interested in signing me," Amoruso told the Daily Record.

"I didn't want to say anything about it because it's very early days and we don't know what is going to happen but they have spoken to my agent.

"It is obviously very flattering but, as I have said all along, my dream would be to finish my career in Glasgow and I really mean that - no matter who wants to sign me.

"But I have to be realistic and if that can't happen then I will look at my options."

Amoruso, who joined Rangers from Fiorentina for £5 million in 1997, will celebrate his 32nd birthday later this month.

What The Papers Say: Wednesday 4 June

United admit they are in Barca talks
Manchester United last night confirmed they are now ready to listen to offers for David Beckham. United revealed their willingness to sell Beckham after chief executive Peter Kenyon admitted he met Barcelona officials to discuss a £30million deal for the England captain. Kenyon had face-to-face talks with Barcelona representative Sandro Rossel at a top London restaurant yesterday to discuss the Spanish club's offer for Beckham for the first time. When asked about the meeting before he flew back to Manchester last night, Kenyon admitted it was to discuss the proposed sale of Beckham. "I cannot confirm anything at this stage," said Kenyon. "But put it this way, you won't look silly if you write the story." The meeting shows United are ready to sell their most high-profile player and prized asset, despite repeated denials from the Old Trafford board.

Wenger steps up the hunt for Harry
Arsene Wenger has offered flops Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Francis Jeffers to Leeds as he steps up his bid to land Harry Kewell. The Arsenal boss has already proposed a swap deal for Kewell of Ray Parlour plus £4million. Now he is willing to give Leeds boss Peter Reid a wider choice of either Parlour, van Bronckhorst or Jeffers and the balance in cash. Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has also been tracking Kewell for months and is preparing a £7m bid for the Aussie international. But the player would prefer a move to Highbury believing first-team opportunities would be better. Wenger does not have the money to compete with Ferguson and hopes Reid will be swayed by his offer of a player-plus-cash deal.
David Anderson, Daily Mirror

Fergie wants Blanc to stay
The United manager wants Laurent Blanc to postpone his retirement and play another few months for the club. Ferguson is contacting the Frenchman, who will be 38 in November, to ask him to return to pre-season training. United will be without Wes Brown for six months at least, and Gary Neville may be out for two months, so Blanc would save Ferguson a fortune.
David McDonnell, Daily Mirror

Oops! Beckham's £2m adidas deal as kids wear Nike
It's enough to make two of David Beckham's biggest backers want to weep. You pay him £2million to promote adidas and he kits his kids out in rival Nike footwear. You give him £1million to plug Pepsi and his wife appears clutching a bottle of Coke. It was funtime for the Beckhams yesterday at Disneyland, California. But for sponsors of football icon David it was more spills than thrills. Sons Brooklyn and Romeo both sported Nike trainers. Dad, who had their names inscribed on his adidas football boots, did at least stick to the brand himself when he stepped out at the theme park. But then wife Victoria, who once had a tie-up herself with Pepsi, came up with her Coca-Cola own goal.
Stephen Moyes, Daily Mirror

Now Phil's a pass master (England 2-1 Serbia & Montenegro)
Phil Neville, so often the target of ridicule, answered his critics last night. The Manchester United utility man was given the key holding role and ended up wearing the skipper's armband. In between he gave a performance that, statistically at least, will have raised a few eyebrows. In the 88 minutes he was on the pitch, Neville had a 95 per cent pass completion rate, making 52 passes to one of his own players. He said: "We've played in a new stadium, on a great pitch. It's a great feeling. I really enjoyed it in midfield."
David McDonnell, Daily Mirror

Kewell fears fans from Ell
Harry Kewell may turn his back on a dream move to Manchester United because he fears an angry backlash from Leeds fans. Aussie Kewell was shocked at the reaction of the Elland Road faithful when Rio Ferdinand left for Old Trafford last summer in a £30m deal. The England star became the target of a hate campaign and even needed his own security guards when he returned to Leeds for a match with his new club last season. Leeds fans would see a Kewell switch to their hated rivals in the same light given that the 24-year-old winger has made his name in eight seasons at Elland Road.
Neil Custis, The Sun

Barcelona in Becks talks
Manchester United have begun talks with Barcelona over the sale of David Beckham. United chief executive Peter Kenyon has met a representative of Barca's new president-elect to hear details of their £30million bid. Beckham will have the final say, but it is clear United are now ready to cash in on one of the biggest stars in the world game. Joan Laporta is clear favourite to be voted in as Nou Camp president - and has promised to deliver Becks as a reward. The £30m fee will be underwritten by his own family's fortune.
Neil Custis, The Sun

Window shopping
Manchester United are well placed to sign Geremi as former club Middlesbrough are still well short of Real Madrid's £10million valuation of the Cameroon midfielder. The Teessiders have bid just £3m, while United are expected to offer £8m for the 24-year-old.
Sports staff, Daily Mail

Let's do lunch
The cat and mouse pursuit of David Beckham between some of Europe's biggest clubs was revived yesterday by the arrival in London of a Spaniard on a mission. The Spanish sports newspaper El Mundo Deportivo claims Sandro Rosell was meeting Peter Kenyon at a London restaurant to thrash out details of Beckham's transfer to Barcelona if Joan Laporta win the Barcelona presidential election on June 15. But Rosell is not only a canvasser for Laporta. He holds a position with Nike, one of United's sponsors, and is also playing a part in deciding the future of PSG's Ronaldinho.

Roy Carroll played the second half of Northern Ireland's match against Italy on Tuesday night, conceding the second goal in a 2-0 defeat.

Fulham's Maik Taylor started the match in goal, and was powerless to stop Lazio striker Bernardo Corradi opening the scoring in the 31st minute.

Roy was introduced at the break, but was given no chance by Marco Delvecchio's powerful low shot in the 67th minute.

The result means that Northern Ireland haven't won in their last ten outings, and haven't scored for 882 minutes.

Reds go defensive

United fans have nominated Lilian Thuram as the defender they'd most like to see at Old Trafford next season.

The Juventus full-back is one of ten defensive players linked with a move to the Reds this summer, and the Frenchman won 30.3% of the votes cast in ManUtd.com's exclusive poll.

His countryman Julien Escude, who probably would have signed for United last summer had it not been for a freak dog-walking injury, came second in the poll, with the Rennes full-back gaining 27.9% of the votes.

Bayer Leverkusen's Brazilian centre-back Lucio came third with 16.7%, with PSV Eindhoven's Kevin Hofland fourth with 9.8%.

Thuram is rumoured to have come close to signing for the Reds a couple of years ago, but opted for Juventus instead. Will he make the right choice this time?

Brown recovery on track

Wes Brown remains on course for a full recovery from his latest injury nightmare.

The England defender is due to enter hospital next month for surgery on his right knee after he damaged cruciate ligaments in the final game of the season against Everton on May 11.

Although there were reports Brown had suffered a setback in his recovery, it is understood United had always pencilled in his operation for the beginning of July - giving the 23-year-old a chance to build up muscle around his knee in readiness for the operation.

Team-mate Roy Keane did not have surgery until six weeks after he had suffered similar damage in 1997 and he eventually returned 10 months later after being persuaded against making his comeback in the final game of the season.

Brown is currently on holiday but is due to return to Manchester shortly after turning down the option of going to Colorado for treatment from the surgeon who successfully guided Ruud van Nistelrooy back to full fitness two years ago.

Instead, he will go back to the specialist who treated him for the same injury in his left leg which ruled him out of the entire 1999-2000 campaign.

Brown is one of five members of Sir Alex Ferguson's squad currently on the injured list. But - unlike their unfortunate team-mate - Nicky Butt (ankle), Gary Neville (foot), David Beckham (hand) and Rio Ferdinand (knee) all hope to make the July 19 departure date for the Red Devils' high-profile tour to the United States.

Meanwhile, Real Sociedad have denied reports linking midfielder Xabi Alonso with a move to United.

It had been reported United were interested in signing the talented midfielder. But Sociedad spokesman Jose Luis Barrenetxea said: "There has been nothing. There have been some rumours as a consequence of the team's great run, but the club has not received any contact regarding the player."

Ai well, we've all enjoyed the lad Henry this season - the Gallic gazelle with the silky-smooth skills has proved he's a lot more than a stupid, embarrassing ad for a girl's car.

But, and even as I speak I can see Ferguson's purple jowls forming an evil grin, it's Van Nistelrooy who's the player of the season.

United unveil new membership scheme

While millions of Manchester United supporters around the world have been celebrating the triumphant end to the 2002/3 Premiership campaign, the club itself has been working hard on a new membership scheme aimed at bringing those fans even closer to the club they love.

Under the new scheme, called One United and launched today, Reds of all ages will be able to keep up with the action and news from the club, get to know their team better, and enjoy a range of benefits under a unique loyalty rewards programme.

Benefits for One United members include the right to apply for tickets to home matches, access to a range of exclusive members-only events, publications and merchandise, and “money can’t buy” experiences such as specially arranged visits to watch United train and trips to Champions League away games.

One United members will also automatically benefit from a range of discounts if they visit Old Trafford for a Stadium Tour, the Museum, the Red Café and the Megastore.

Sir Alex Ferguson says: “One United allows all our fans to show their support for the club and for us to say thanks for that support, whether members regularly come to Old Trafford or not. It’s the fans who make the club what it is today and One United will enable them to get closer to Old Trafford wherever they live.”

Manchester United already has 150,000 members in what is the largest membership scheme in British football.

MANCHESTER UNITED landed Ronaldinho for £9million last night - and signalled David Beckham's exit from Old Trafford.

United chief executive Peter Kenyon was in Paris yesterday to agree the Ronaldinho fee with Paris St Germain.

And Beckham's departure was virtually sealed as Real Madrid attempted to hijack Barcelona's bid for the England skipper.

Real president Florentino Perez tried last night to contact Beckham on holiday in America to express their interest.

Perez insisted last month Real did not want Beckham - now he most definitely does.

Not least because he does not want their most hated rivals to secure such a big signing.

Also, he wants his good friend Lluis Bassat to win the Barcelona presidency vote ahead of Joan Laporta, who is behind the club's Beckham bid.

The arrival of Ronaldinho, 23, from PSG is just the first in a £30m spree - largely funded by the sale of Becks.

Boss Alex Ferguson also wants Harry Kewell from Leeds at £7m, a new No1 keeper who will cost another £8m, plus an experienced defender.

He also has his sights on the 19-year-old right-sided Portuguese star Ricardo Quaresma of Sporting Lisbon.

Ronaldinho is clearly excited by the deal. He said: "It is flattering that such a big club wants me. The prospect of playing in the Premiership and the Champions League is an exciting one."

Bellion move is a done deal

David Bellion’s move to Old Trafford is a done deal, according to a report. The French forward will officially remain with the Black Cats until his contract expires on June 30, but, according to the Sunderland Echo, the terms are all agreed for his move to Manchester. However, the report adds that there will be no official confirmation of the deal until the Frenchman gets his demob papers. If United do sign Bellion, it will bring a welcome closure to a long, drawn-out transfer saga. The Reds looked set to snap him up during the transfer window, but that move fell through amid much acrimony, leaving Bellion’s future in limbo.

They're forcing me out

A YEAR ago David Beckham hugged Alex Ferguson as his future at Old Trafford was sealed with a new contract.

Now the pair hardly speak and it is clear that Manchester United want to sell their star name and cash in.

Beckham believes he is being forced out of Manchester United.

The star will be in turmoil on his American holiday as news leaks through to him that Manchester United have had meetings about his sale.

SunSport reported yesterday how chief executive Peter Kenyon met with a representative of Barcelona's president-elect Joan Laporta on Tuesday to discuss terms of a possible deal.

That will not have been done without the say-so of manager Alex Ferguson, who clearly believes life at Manchester United can go on Beckham free.

SunSport can reveal that Beckham, 28, will now have make-or-break talks with his advisors on his return from holiday to decide if it is worth trying to stay at the club.

Last month Beckham stated his intention to stay at the club - but it looks like United now do not want him to reamin.

Jon Holmes, the head of Beckham's agents SFX, has indicated for the first time that his future could lay elsewhere.

Holmes said: "He has said that he wants to stay there with United.

"If the club alter their view - and it needs all parties to change their view - then, of course, everything is possible in football."

A year ago it was Beckham who held all the aces as the club bent to his every desire to sign him on a new four-year contract.

Now, after a season in which he has fallen out with the manager, it is clear that the club believe it is time to cash in.

A close friend of Beckham's said: "It is going to hurt him to be pushed out of Manchester United.

"But increasingly it looks like he is off.

"The decision looks like it could even be taken out of his hands."

There certainly would be no arguments with Beckham's main sponsors about him leaving.

In fact, adidas are already pushing for a move to link him up with Real Madrid, who wear their shirts.

The sportswear firm's chief Herbert Hainer puts millions into Real and wants them to crack the Far East market which is why he wants Beckham at the Bernabeu.

Hainer said: "I don't know what is coming up but it is definitely an interesting option for him, because Real Madrid is a great team.

"It would be in the firms' interests if the player wore Real's adidas kit."

It is all down to breaking into the Asian market where Beckham is the most popular sportsman in the world.

Hainer said: "People in Asia are crazy for him and people want to see him more in Spain."

Adidas had a big influence in the transfer of French superstar Zinedine Zidane to Real two years ago. Barcelona are sponsored by adidas' big rivals Nike but Hainer says they would still be proud to have some interest in Beckham with the boot sponsorship.

Jan Runau, Hainer's spokesman, said: "It would be good for adidas if he joined Real.

"But if he did move to a team with a different kit supplier it would not make a difference to adidas' marketing strategy. He would still be a great player, a great role model and a great asset to our company."

Manchester United have altered their view on Beckham and he may now have to alter his.

Ferguson is scouring Europe to freshen his team with Ronaldinho on his way already after Kenyon yesterday completed the £9million deal to bring him to Old Trafford. The boss wants changes and he wants cash to make them as well.

His relationship with Beckham has suffered since the infamous flying boot incident.

And Ferguson has grown tired of the circus revolving round the player constantly.Beckham, of course, will have the final say in the decision.

But what he will ask his advisors on returning from America is whether it is really worth staying at a club who no longer want him.

Fergie made it clear at the end of last season that in the key matches he does not need the England captain.

He left him out of the crucial games against Liverpool, Newcastle and Real Madrid.

Beckham looked close to tears after the final home game against Charlton as he was consoled by Gary Neville. ITV's The Premiership claimed Beckham had mouthed 'I've had talks'.

What he actually said was 'They've had talks'.

Now those talks have been held and Beckham knows that whether Barcelona buy him or not, United are ready to sell.

Outgoing chairman Martin Edwards is to become only the third president in Manchester United's 125-year history following in the footsteps of John Henry Davies and Sir Matt Busby.

Samba star's glory mission

SAMBA football is on its way to Old Trafford - just when David Seaman thought it was safe to head up to Manchester.

Ronaldinho, the man with the flowing dark locks who famously lobbed England's king of the ponytails from 42 yards during last summer's World Cup quarter-final, will be parading his skills in a Manchester United shirt next season.

Nothing could be sweeter for United fans than to have the little Brazilian dazzler among their all-star ranks - especially as he signed on the same day that arch-rivals City finally landed Seaman.

And they will hope Ronaldinho, 23, can heap more misery on the former Arsenal star to add to his agony from Japan.

The swashbuckling midfielder is set to take over from David Beckham, currently in America, as the new centre of attention at Old Trafford.

He will bring razzmatazz to the pitch - unlike Beckham, who has continued to annoy boss Alex Ferguson with his showbiz lifestyle off it.

Fergie wants to win the Champions League again - and helping to spearhead that bid will now be Ronaldinho's mission.

Yet Ronaldinho is not always as good as Brazilian gold.

Before the finals in Japan and South Korea, where he scored a total of two goals, he also scored with a lapdancer from Altrincham - allegedly eight times in one night!

He can also do the dirty on the pitch. After his stunning strike that gave Brazil their 2-1 win over England in Shizuoka, he promptly got himself sent off for a foul on Danny Mills that earned him a one-match ban.

Nor is he afraid to speak out against a manager, as he has shown in several personal clashes with Paris St Germain chief Luis Fernandez.

His first meeting with his new manager should be interesting, as Ronaldinho was shocked by news of Fergie kicking a boot at Becks during a dressing-room bust-up after the FA Cup defeat by Arsenal last season.

Ronaldinho said at the time: "You only know how to react when it happens to you.

"But I would certainly expect an apology. The least that you can do is say sorry.

"I have had rows with managers in the past. But I don't know what I would do in the kind of situation in which Beckham found himself."

Well, he can now find out in the flesh just what life with the fiery Scot is like. And he should perhaps remember Fergie does not suffer ANY opposition.

It's Keano the boss

IT couldn't be, it isn't, it can't be...IT IS!

Yes, folks, Roy Keane is taking his first steps into management as he tries for a UEFA coaching badge.

The Manchester United skipper has worked under the master himself - winning seven Premiership titles with Alex Ferguson in his 10-year career at Old Trafford.

But Keane has decided even that is not enough.

And this week he enrolled on a 10-day intensive residential course at Warwick University in a bid to get his UEFA B badge. Keano has not exactly got a good track record when it comes to dealing with bosses.

Exactly a year ago he hit the headlines when he was booted out of Ireland's World Cup squad following his infamous bust-up with Mick McCarthy.

Keane was highly critical of McCarthy's role as Irish manager and was sent home from Saipan, watching from the sidelines as the team reached the last 16 of the World Cup without him.

His other misdemeanours include a running feud with Manchester City's Alf-Inge Haaland and constant spats with match officials. But now the boot is on the other foot as he is learning coaching techniques on a course which includes former managers.

But Keane, 31, has no plans to quit playing just yet.

He returned for United last December after four months out following surgery on his knee - and United did not lose another Premiership game all season.

Keane has three years left on his contract and insists he has no plans to leave. He said recently: "I'm already looking forward to pre-season.

"People talk about the challenge we will face but my biggest challenge will come from within United and the players we have got there.

"It's unlikely I'll play anywhere else after United. I've got three years left on my contract and that takes me to nearly 35."

Keane is also trying to curb his temper through yoga.

The Irishman has been attending sessions, known for their calming effects, at United's training ground.

Chairman honoured

Outgoing United chairman Martin Edwards had a dinner held in his honour at Old Trafford on Tuesday night, to mark the end of his association with the club.

However, the party was somewhat premature, as it was announced on the night that Edwards is to become only the third president in the club's history.

In his speech celebrating the club's progress under Edwards' tenure, United Chief Executive Peter Kenyon announced that Martin would be following in the footsteps of John Henry Davies and Sir Matt Busby in becoming a non-executive figurehead for the club.

Around 60 members of the United board, family and friends - including former players Sir Bobby Charlton, Paddy Crerand and David Sadler - attended the dinner in the Platinum Suite to mark the last month of Edwards' chairmanship of the club. He steps down on June 30 but will still be in the Directors Box at home matches in his capacity as club president.
