TEAM McLAREN MERCEDES COMPLETES SECOND MP4-18 TEST
Team McLaren Mercedes successfully completed a four-day test at Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya today, during which drivers David Coulthard and Kimi Raikkonen drove the new MP4-18 for the first time.

Two MP4-18 cars had been taken to Barcelona for the test and Kimi made his debut in the car on Wednesday. He was immediately impressed. “I really enjoyed my first test of the MP4-18 and the car felt good,” said Kimi. “We completed a number of laps and obviously I'm learning about the car all the time. Every time I went out it got better and better.”

Kimi was joined at the circuit on Thursday by David, who got his first drive in the new car. "Obviously it was fantastic to be driving the MP4-18 for the first time,” he said on Thursday afternoon. “The team completed a positive programme and the car felt good.”

Both drivers completed a comprehensive number of laps in the cars during the test.

Alex had been present in Barcelona on Monday and Tuesday carrying out additional testing of the MP4-18, while test driver Pedro de la Rosa completed a successful three-day test in Monza yesterday behind the wheel of the MP4-17D.

TEAM McLAREN MERCEDES MERCEDES TO VISIT EXXONMOBIL HQ

Team McLaren Mercedes drivers David Coulthard and Kimi Raikkonen as well as Team Principal Ron Dennis will visit ExxonMobil's global Headquarters in USA on their way to the 2003 Canadian Grand Prix,. Tomorrow (Tuesday) will see the trio meeting the more than 3000 ExxonMobil employees based in Fairfax, Virginia where they will answer questions about the 2003 season, the MP4-18 and be available to sign autographs.

According to the Guardian Newspaper Ron Dennis is pleased that Michael Schumacher is staying in Formula One. "It's a positive development for Formula One and we look forward to try and beat him on a regular basis."

CANADIAN GRAND PRIX – FRIDAY

Team McLaren Mercedes driver Kimi Raikkonen set the sixth fastest time of 1:35.373 in today’s first qualifying session in Montreal. Team mate David Coulthard did 1:36.463, which put him eighth. Both the Free Practice and particularly qualifying were affected by wet weather.

KIMI RAIKKONEN
“There is no doubt that today was quite difficult because of the weather conditions. I’m getting used to being the first car out for qualifying but it does make it more difficult as there are no lines to follow. I ran wide during my lap but it was really not a big problem and in the circumstances I think we did the best we could.”

DAVID COULTHARD
“Not a lot to say as it was just too wet for anything, really. There was no grip and I think we were all just aquaplaning and concentrating on getting the car back in one piece. However let’s see what happens tomorrow when hopefully we will get a chance to run the car in drier conditions.”

RON DENNIS
“Variable weather conditions with the inevitable aquaplaning problems somewhat distorted the outcome of qualifying. Hopefully the weather will improve for tomorrow and allow everybody to optimise their cars.”

“The gaps to the leading cars in these difficult conditions say it all. In the rain we haven’t been competitive today.”

CANADIAN GRAND PRIX - SUNDAY

Team McLaren Mercedes driver Kimi Raikkonen finished the Canadian Grand Prix in sixth place whilst team mate David Coulthard was forced to retire on lap 48 with a gearbox problem. Today’s result saw Kimi lose his World Championship lead for the first time this season but only by three points. The Team McLaren Mercedes team is second in the Constructors’ Championship with 76 points. Kimi came in for his only pitstop on lap 33 (11.8 seconds).

KIMI RAIKKONEN
“Today’s result is not a disaster at all and the gap to Michael is only three points with plenty more races to go. I started the race from the pitlane but after 10-15 laps, the team told me to save my brakes so I was not able to push and if you don’t push, you don’t gain places. However I was able to make some progress through the field. I lost one position to Barrichello when I had a puncture on my right rear tyre and had to go into the pits a bit earlier than scheduled. The whole team and myself look forward to fighting back at the next race.”

DAVID COULTHARD
“Obviously a non-finish is never good, but that is the way it went today. Initially I lost fourth and fifth gear but it was possible to keep going to try and score some points. However, eventually I also lost seventh gear, which made things impossible. Until then the race was encouraging as we were on the pace and once I was in clean air we were running as fast as the guys at the front. So we have the pace we just need to qualify better and ensure reliability. Let’s hope that happens at the next race!”

RON DENNIS
“A hard day at the office. David’s retirement was caused by a transmission failure whilst Kimi’s progress was slower than possible as a result of higher brake wear than we anticipated. Kimi’s puncture cost him fifth place, but nevertheless his efforts were rewarded with three valuable points. The pace of the car was enough to win the race, and we will therefore maintain our low risk strategy for the introduction of the MP4-18.”


NORBERT HAUG
“The outcome of the race is acceptable taking into consideration that Kimi started last. Our lap times during the race were competitive and three points away from the top at the half way point of the season are not a lot. I’m sorry for David who also could have finished in the points today. We are now looking forward to the next Grand Prix at the Nürburgring where we will try hard to keep the fight for the World Championship open.”

Mp4 -18 - BAD NEWS For Mclaren Fan

The new MP4/18 fails the FIA crash test .

McLaren MP4/18 will have to face more problems : the chassis has failed the mandatory FIA crash test to evaluate the safety of all Formula One cars. The MP4/18 will not be able to compete in a Grand Prix until it passes the crash test. Another additional problem for Ron Dennis' team !

It is the German daily Die Welt that mentioned about the MP4/18's result in the FIA test. The German newspaper also added that with this situation, the new car will definitely not be part of the race at the Nurburgring in a few days. According to an anonymous FIA source quoted in Die Welt, the problems that plague the new McLaren car are so serious that it may require many months to come up with a solution !

Kalau harapkan kete saja laju, jangan haraplah nak "makan" MS...telah terbukti seluruh musim lalu dan musim ini bahawa keta yang lebih laju tak semestinya menang kerana ia memerlukan pemandu yang "terre"...alaaa macam MS...:D
