Three cheers for Father Ted!

OK, we'll leave that for now, but what about the Beckham saga?

You've got Real Madrid reportedly showing an interest now and Beckham's father, Ted, calling Ferguson this that and the other. What's your take on it all, Robbo?

I'm delighted Ted has come out of the shadows, but I wonder who he's speaking on behalf of.

Nobody's saying "shut up, dad" are they? So I think he's been given licence to have a good old go at Fergie. And what a delight that is.

A man whose boy has played at that club for 14 years slagging off Ferguson in every conceivable manner. Marvellous.

If it's true that Ferguson hasn't spoken to Beckham for four months then it's a disgrace. Fergie should have retired when he had the chance and got his kicks out of the gee-gees instead.

Anyway, I think Beckham will go to Real - in fact I think everyone knew that about nine months ago.

And what about the Barcelona fella, Joan Laporta? It's a girl's name for starters - why doesn't he just call himself John Door?

I suppose he thinks it sounds more exotic in Spanish. Anyway, he's come out and made an absolute nonsense of himself by suggesting that he'll buy Beckham if he becomes president.

So you've got all that going on and we still don't know for sure what's happening. I mean I've even heard rumours that Beckham's coming to Boro.

Now you are being silly, Robbo!

No, he's going to take a massive pay cut because he loves the bright lights around the chemical area and he's getting a nice little home for himself on a new estate in Ingleby Barwick.

He's coming to stay with us first, we've got a nice little hairdresser sorted out for him.

Mind you, according to Ted, Posh has got the last word on where they're going to go and I'm not sure she'd like it up here.

You know who wears the trousers in that household...well, actually neither of them do.

But it's a hell of a carry on and I just wish they'd hurry up and sort it out so we can all get back to leading a normal life.

Well that's it for this week - I hope you have a good weekend, Robbo.

Aye, I'll be putting me feet up and not worring too much about sport.

Good for you. See you then.

What The Papers Say: Saturday 14 June

Vieira the Real target
David Beckham's move to Real Madrid is under serious threat because Patrick Vieira is on the brink of becoming available this summer. Real would prefer the Arsenal captain to the England skipper and cannot afford to buy both this summer, putting Beckham's favoured transfer at risk.
Ian McGarry, Daily Mail

Fergie can't move unless Becks does
Sir Alex Ferguson has been told by Manchester United's PLC board that the prime targets in his summer spending spree must be placed on hold until the fate of David Beckham is decided. The United manager was less than happy to be advised at his Cote D'Azur summer hideaway on Thursday that until the club could determine where Beckham is heading, and at what price, they cannot sanction the purchases of Ronaldinho and Harry Kewell.
Steve Curry, Daily Mail

Best puts trophies under the hammer
George Best is planning to sell the two individuals trophies that commemorate the most famous season if his glittering football career. His 1968 European Footballer of the Year award and Football Writers' Footballer of the Year award will be sold at auction in Chester in September. "People will think George is skint but that's not the reason for selling," said Phil Hughes, Best's agent.
Charles Sale, Daily Mail

Becks bad blood
Ted Beckham, one of the few central characters in the transfer saga to emerge with any credit, was understood to have been telling friends as long ago as August 1996 - after his son's wonder goal from the halfway line against Wimbledon - that David did not have the best of relationships with Sir Alex Ferguson.
Charles Sale, Daily Mail

Becks does a runner
David Beckham is considering doing a "runner" to the Far East to avoid all the hassle of returning home to face non-stop surveillance as the decision on his future reaches fever point. He was due home from America last night, but booked four different flights to provide a decoy.
Harry Harris, Daily Express

Enter the fourth musketeer
Sometime over the next few days David and Victoria Beckham will have to take out the glossy brochures, sit down and choose the foreign city they will call home for the next three or four years with the same precision as they have planned the world tour which is dominating the summer. He must choose Spain.
Graham Hunter, Daily Express

Archibald: Barca gig too hot for Beckham
Steve Archibald says the pressure at Barcelona would be too much for David Beckham and has urged him to go to Real Madrid instead. Former Spurs star Archibald fears the expectation at the Nou Camp would be too much for Beckham - and he should know, after being asked to take over Diego Maradona's number 10 shirt at Barca in 1984.
Chris Hatherall, Daily Express

Silvestre's rain warning for Ron
Mikael Silvestre believes Ronaldinho would fit in perfectly at Old Trafford - but may not find Manchester to his liking. He said: "Manchester is the heartland of England and for a South American it could be quite difficult."
Sports staff, Daily Express

Brown glee as Becks sale may net him £10m
Chancellor Gordon Brown is rubbing his hands with glee at the prospect of a £10million windfall from David Beckham's move to Spain. In the eyes of the taxman, the England captain is nothing more than an asset of Manchester United. So when the 28-year-old moves to Real Madrid or Barcelona, the Old Trafford team will be liable to pay 30 per cent corporation tax on profit from the deal.
Adrian Lee, Daily Express

Battling Best goes under the knife again
Soccer legend George Best was undergoing surgery last night to replace stomach implants designed to help him in his life-ling battle against alcohol.
News staff, Daily Express

I'm off!
Luis Figo has vowed to quit Real Madrid if David Beckham joins the club. And that could mean Sir Alex Ferguson making a second attempt to sign Figo. The Madrid superstar - apparently fed up of the speculation of possibly losing his place to the United ace - told friends this week: "If Beckham comes, I go."
Bill Thornton, Daily Star

Dial a deal for Becks
Mobile phone giants Vodafone are preparing to pay David Beckham's £6 million salary if he moves to Barcelona. Vodafone are already United's shirt sponsors which costs £8 million a year and they pay Becks an extra £1 million to be the public face of their television campaign in England. But they are desperate to get a foot into Spanish football because more people own mobiles in that country than anywhere else in Europe.
Danny Fullbrook, Daily Star

Fergie prays for le Frey
Manchester United have made a £7 million move for French star Sebastien Frey after offering to pay up Fabien Barthez's contract. Sir Alex has decided the young Parma star will be the successor to Barthez at Old Trafford. United have already offered Barthez to Marseille and PSG without success, so they will pay up one year on the World Cup winner's contract and give him a free transfer.
Danny Fullbrook, Daily Star

Real offer Brazil star Ronaldinho as bait to bag Becks
Manchester United have been told by Real Madrid they will only be able to sign top target Ronaldinho this summer if David Beckham joins the Spanish giants. Real have hijacked United's move for the Brazilian World Cup winner by offering his club, Paris St Germain, £20million - double the Old Trafford bid - in a carefully-orchestrated ploy to ensure that they ultimately land England skipper Beckham. Real have made it clear they will drop their interest and allow Ronaldinho to move to the Premiership champions - if United do not stand in the way of their attempts to take Beckham to the Bernabeu. Outgoing PSG coach Luis Fernandez, who has been at the centre of the Ronaldinho transfer saga, predicted Beckham would start next season with Real. He said last night: "It is my opinion that Beckham will join Real Madrid this summer and Ronaldinho will end up playing for Manchester United. These two players hold the key to the biggest transfer story of the summer."
David McDonnell, Daily Mirror

Life in the Real world
Given the turbulence behind his very public split with Manchester United, the lure of a move abroad for David Beckham is surely getting stronger by the day. But just what can the England captain expect, should - as now seems increasingly likely - he accepts the pull of the peseta, or, indeed, euro, and head to Madrid or Barcelona? Steve McManaman has already pioneered that journey, his trophy haul in four years with Spanish giants Real making him the most successful English footballing export of all time. For the former Liverpool midfielder, life in Madrid has been a quite unique, and often wonderful experience. Yet he readily admits that it is not all song and sangria, despite being part of the most celebrated team in world football.
David Maddock, Daily Mirror

Barthez: Life is so perfect at United
Fabien Barthez yesterday insisted he will fight for his place - even after Manchester United finally sealed a £1.8million deal for American keeper Tim Howard. Howard, 24, will sign next week from New York MetroStars after being assured of getting a passport through his Hungarian-born mother. But Barthez, 31, currently in Paris as France prepare for the Confederations Cup, insisted he had no intention of quitting Old Trafford. He said: "For me, everything is going perfectly well. "I am 200 per cent relaxed. For me, there is no debate. I still feel very happy in Manchester so I am going to stay there. There is no problem at all."
John Cross, Daily Mirror

Becks' snub for Sir Alex
David Beckham has delivered an amazing snub to Man United manager Sir Alex Ferguson after getting the OBE. The England captain deliberately ignored his club boss in a carefully-worded statement in recognition of his honour. Becks, 28, is furious that Sir Alex, 61, has told United to flog him to the highest bidder. In his announcement after the Queen’s Birthday Honours were unveiled, Becks paid tribute to team-mates, family, club and country. But there was NO mention of the man he once said was a father figure to him. Beckham said: “I am honoured and privileged to have received this recognition. It is not just for me but for Manchester United, England, all of my team-mates and my family.”
Neil Custis, The Sun

We don't need Becks
Mikael Silvestre last night broke ranks by insisting that Manchester United would NOT suffer without David Beckham. The French defender is the first Old Trafford star to publicly talk about the England skipper's transfer. And he reckons as long as the club seal the Ronaldinho transfer, Beckham will not be missed. Silvestre insisted: "It won't change the balance of the team very much. Ronaldinho and Beckham do not play in the same position. I have not got a clue about Beckham's transfer but what I can say is United have always been very wise in their recruiting from one season to the next.
Neil Custis, The Sun

Madrid made for David
While Alex Ferguson has grown sick of David Beckham's pop-star lifestyle, Steve McManaman knows a club where the England skipper would fit in just fine. Because at Real Madrid, where Macca has spent the last four years, he knows every player is treated like a movie idol. McManaman believes Becks has never shared his own ambition to play abroad but the ex-Liverpool winger admits he is not surprised Manchester United have agreed to sell their most glamorous asset. For when you have spent any length of time at Real, you know that every player has his price - Zinedine Zidane at £47million, Luis Figo at £37m and Ronaldo, a mere snip at £20m. And if Beckham becomes Real's latest capture, his status as a front-page celeb would be matched by all of his new team-mates. Just spend an hour in the car park of Real's training ground and you will see as many megastars as a night at the Oscars. And McManaman said: "If the results are going well, the players are treated like film stars. The Real players are the most famous people here. The likes of Raul are more famous than pop stars or movie stars.
Dave Kidd, The Sun

Ban on Becks shirt
Shirty Real Madrid chiefs are so paranoid about their bid to sign David Beckham that they have BANNED fans from having his name printed on their famous white kit. The manager of the official club shop insisted Beckham was 'the forbidden name' when SunSport photographer Nicky Hayes asked for it on the back of a Real shirt, together with the player's trademark No7. Spanish giants Real hope to beat off competition from arch-rivals Barcelona and European Cup winners AC Milan to land the Manchester United and England star this summer.
Dave Kidd, The Sun

Ron caught in crossfire
Real Madrid are ready to use Ronaldinho as a bargaining tool to make sure they get David Beckham. The Spanish giants are trying to hijack Ronaldinho's move to Old Trafford by offering £5million more for him. They would then hold United to ransom with an offer to pull out of the Ronaldinho transfer - if they only do business with them over Becks. To United's horror, Ronaldinho's agent has now shaken hands on a deal both with United and Real over the player's transfer as he tries to get a bidding war going. But Real, who have bid £14m to United's £9m are using him more for their plot to land Beckham.
Neil Custis, The Sun

Ryan's sun on bleach
Bleach boy Ryan Giggs suns himself in Portugal with his girl — and sends other tourists diving for cover. Guests by the hotel pool near Faro reckoned the Man Utd ace’s dyed blond bonce was as dazzling as his wing play. One said: “It shone in the sun like a Belisha beacon.” Ryan, 29, had his locks dyed by his auntie before his hol with Stacey Cook, 24, and their baby girl Liberty.

Juventus eyeing Veron, say reports

LONDON (AFP) - Argentina midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron could be following David Beckham out the exit door at Old Trafford, according to press reports in England and Italy. Juventus contacted Manchester United with an inquiry about Veron's availability in April and, according to Italian reports, have prepared a 20-million-euro bid for the midfielder.
The Turin giants could also attempt to tempt United into a sale by offering either Dutch midfielder Edgar Davids or French defender Lilian Thuram as part of a swap deal.

United manager Alex Ferguson is a long-standing admirer of both players and Juve have reason to sell. Davids will be a free agent next summer and able to leave for nothing while Thuram has reportedly fallen out with Juventus coach Marcelo Lippi.

Pini Zihavi, an agent who was involved in United's 28-million pound signing of Veron from Lazio in 2001, confirmed Juventus's interest.

"They have been interested in him a long time," he told the Guardian. "His name was brought up (in talks between the clubs) towards the end of the season."

It remains to be seen if Ferguson will be prepared to offload Veron and effectively admit that he overpaid for a player who has, in the eyes of most United fans, been a huge disappointment in his two seasons at Old Trafford.

His presence in the United midfield was seen as a key reason for the club's trophy-less 2001-02 season.

After a promising start in his second season, particularly in Europe, Veron found himself sidelined by injury as United overhauled Arsenal to reclaim their English Premiership title.

Meanwhile, French goalkeeper Fabien Barthez insisted on Friday that he is happy at English champions Manchester United and does not want to leave. "For me, everything is fine. I am 100-percent relaxed, no, 200-percent relaxed at United," Barthez told L'Equipe.

"As far as I am concerned, there is no debate. I still feel happy in Manchester so I am going to stay. There is no problem."

Barthez, who is here preparing for the Confederations Cup which begins on Wednesday, has spent three seasons with United but the club has been linked with a move for American goalkeeper Tim Howard and Leeds United's Paul Robinson who are seen as potential successors to the Frenchman.

O'Shea hands United fans some good news

LONDON, (AFP) - Manchester United fans, reeling from the potential loss of David Beckham, received some good news on Thursday when Republic of Ireland international defender John O'Shea said he was ready to sign a new Old Trafford deal. "I'm in talks with United at the moment about a new contract," said O'Shea.
"Peter Kenyon (chief executive) is on holiday at the moment, so we'll have to wait until he gets back before finalising things."

The 22-year-old made 52 appearances last season as United clinched the Premiership title and was man-of-the-match in Ireland's 2-0 Euro 2004 qualifying win over Georgia in Dublin on Wednesday.

The win followed Saturday's 2-1 victory over Albania and put Ireland into second place in Group Ten. If they beat Russia at home in September, and then win in Switzerland, they will top the group and qualify automatically for the finals in Portugal next summer.

"I couldn't have asked for a better end to this season," said O'Shea. "The last two months have been a dream and these two results for Ireland have been the icing on the cake."

Stam: No turning back for Becks now

Former Manchester United defender Jaap Stam believes David Beckham will have to leave Manchester United or "rot in the reserves".

England captain Beckham is being courted by Barcelona and, according to reports, Real Madrid with United apparently ready to sell him to the highest bidder.

"Once Ferguson decides you are no longer part of his plans for whatever reasons, there is no turning back," Stam, who was sold to Lazio for 16.5million two years ago, told the Sunday Mirror.

He added: "You are like an unwanted piece of baggage and you have to weigh up whether it's worth hanging around when there is no chance of playing.

"I think you are just expected to accept it, there is no plan in place if you decide you're not going other than the fact you will probably be left to rot in the reserves."

Hasta la vista, Beckham

It is easy to forget that there may well a footballing issue at the heart of the continuing media circus over DB07, Goldenballs, Fashion Victim, Saint David or whatever you choose to call the England captain and seemingly former Manchester United player.

Sir Alex Ferguson, it appears, feels he can do without his deadball specialist. And the fact that he will be ridding himself of a man whose profile increasingly threatens to overshadow the world's most famous football club may be attractive to the canny Scot.

Ferguson's interest in selling merchandise, attending movie premieres and ever-evolving hairstyles is less than zero. He is solely interested in the business of winning football matches and, far more pertinently, that Manchester United are the team winning the matches.

Whatever the real truth behind the infamous boot incident after the FA Cup tie with Arsenal, it seems that a final parting of the ways was set in motion here. Beckham's open flaunting of a minor injury and use of his own PR agency to further the story is believed to have angered Ferguson, who was contrite over the incident but angry over the way it was propogated into a media epic.

From here on in, Ferguson seemingly made preparations for the long-term absence of Beckham from his squad by using him sparingly. The end-of-season flurry of big games saw him miss the 4-0 win over Liverpool, 6-2 win over Newcastle and the 2-2 draw at Highbury before he was benched for the Old Trafford clash with Real Madrid.

In his place Ferguson chose to field Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, a converted striker unlikely to be mounting a promotional tour of the USA and Asia when he should be resting for the new season. The Norwegian excelled in the role, and in supplying a killer cross for Ryan Giggs to head a timely equaliser against Arsenal he played a crucial part in perhaps the most important goal of United's season.

Solskjaer's adaptability in a varied, fluid and interchanging attacking approach reaped dividends. Ferguson has abandoned the 4-4-2 standard that served him so well throughout the 1990s and chosen to play a diamond formation in which a lone striker is supported by raiding midfielders in Solskjaer, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes.

Playing a lone striker somewhat negates the usefulness of the crossed ball into the box since he is likely to be outnumbered by all but the most abandoned defence. As this is Beckham's forte, his role is significantly reduced. And what about the dead ball? Free-kicks continue to be his richest source of goals, that much is true, yet United did not score a single goal from a corner in the 2002-3 season - continuing the idea that a lack of aerial power rather nullifies the effectiveness of the trademarked 'best crosser of a ball in world football'.

Ferguson has never yet been convinced of Beckham's usefulness in a central role. He has only been given his head in that role on one occasion of note - the 1999 European Cup Final - though that was out of necessity in the absence of the suspended Scholes and Keane. It was only on Beckham's return to the right wing that fate dealt United such a happy hand that night in Barcelona.

Beckham's propensity to overplay the 'hollywood ball' has seen him all but rejected from the central role he has so often spoken of craving.

And then there's the England question. Why, ask many, is Beckham so much more visible for his country than he is for his club? Aside from the fact he usually sports a new hairstyle that he probably couldn't get away with at United, there's the feeling that Sven Goran Eriksson grants him far more freedom to go on flights of fancy than Ferguson would ever allow.

As thrilling and effective as Beckham's showing against Greece in October 2001 was, he'd be unlikely to be allowed to adopt the kid-in-a-park-it's-my-ball approach that he gave in that game. It seems little wonder that Beckham enjoys the national stage more than domestic scene where he is regarded as well down the pecking order of midfield players when it comes to dictating play.

His efforts in that Greece game had negative effects on his club form and Ferguson chose to drop the player over the following couple of months in an effort to preserve him. The same occurred in the 2002-3 season after England's clash with Turkey where a headless chicken Beckham hurtled round the pitch with little care over his own personal safety - no doubt a galling sight for Ferguson.

Much the same must have been made of Beckham's trans-continental trip to South Africa, where he did a bit of PR with Nelson Mandela while sporting ludicrous braids and then was injured in a match which, in itself, was only preparation for a Euro 2004 qualifier for which he was suspended. And it must be questioned how much wisdom Ferguson saw in a barely half-fit Beckham travelling to the World Cup after that fractured metatarsal.

In essence, for all the fuss, Ferguson now believes Beckham is expendable. In no way can he be regarded as United's most influential player. That accolade must go to one of Scholes, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Roy Keane (when fully fit) or Ryan Giggs (when he can lift himself out of the torpor of much of last season).

In a depressed transfer market, cashing in a 28-year-old for £30m and then being able to buy three or four players to reinforce a challenge on the European Cup is proving seductive to Sir Alex. A senior defender, a goalkeeper, an additional striker and perhaps a right-sided midfielder as a direct replacement, with Sporting Lisbon starlet Ricardo Quaresma the favourite should one be bought, should all strengthen a squad which looked somewhat threadbare at various times in the 2002-3 season.

Taking these factors into account, the footballing logic behind Ferguson's decision to allow the board to sell Beckham (and make no mistake the decision has been taken by Ferguson) seems to have significant foundation. And the prospect of ridding his club of an unwanted front and back-page media circus at every last movement of Beckham and his wife, whose influence in all this can hardly be pleasing to the last-of-the-old-school boss.

As far back as 1999, in his infamous bestselling autobiography, Ferguson expressed concern over the popstar and frontpage lifestyle that his number 7 was leading though he praised the player for not letting it affect his football. One gets the feeling that in the light of that media pressure being magnified in the years since that Ferguson believes the player's game is now being affected in an adverse fashion.

Ferguson and Beckham's famed father-son relationship is at an end. And Ferguson, a firm believer in the concept that no man is bigger than the club, including himself, and no believer in football being a sentimental game, no longer sees the need to have him in his squad.

Protest as his representatives and motormouth father might, David Beckham and Manchester United are finished. Sir Alex Ferguson no longer wants nor believes he needs him.

England returning to Old Trafford

The FA today announced that Manchester United will host England’s final home European Championship Qualifier, against Liechtenstein on Wednesday September 10th. Kick off will be at 8.00pm.

Old Trafford has already proved itself at international level, successfully hosting several senior England internationals, including the 2-2 draw against Greece in October 2001, when David Beckham’s last-minute free kick sealed qualification for the 2002 FIFA World Cup.

It was also the stage for three matches of the 1966 World Cup and five matches during Euro 96, as well as England friendlies against Scotland (1926), South Africa (1997) and most recently Sweden (2001), when Beckham was again on score sheet.

In May this year the “Theatre of Dreams” played host to the UEFA Champions League Final between AC Milan and Juventus, and with a capacity of 68,210 is the largest football stadium in England.

When announcing the fixture, The FA’s Director of Marketing and Communications Paul Barber said: “We’re delighted to be staging another senior international at Old Trafford.

“Manchester United have already showed their commitment to and support for The FA and our national teams by hosting a number of international matches at all levels, as well as FA Cup Semi-finals and FA Youth Cup Finals.

“We are pleased to be offering the greatest number of fans the opportunity to witness England’s final Home Euro 2004 Qualifier, and we look forward to a fantastic atmosphere in one of Europe’s finest stadiums.”

Manchester United Managing Director David Gill added: “Manchester United is thrilled to be working with The Football Association to host this critical match in England’s qualification campaign for Euro 2004. We have a great working relationship with The FA and are honoured to have staged England matches at Old Trafford in the past, including the crucial World Cup qualifier against Greece. We are greatly looking forward to hosting the Liechtenstein game in September and are sure it will be a great occasion for everyone.”

England’s only previous encounter with Liechtenstein was the away qualifier in Vaduz on 29th March, when goals from Michael Owen and David Beckham clinched a 2-0 win.

Ticket details to be confirmed.

Oh El! Barca's Becks fury

FURIOUS Barcelona fear they have been double-crossed by Manchester United.

They were shocked by SunSport's picture yesterday of top United and Real Madrid officials meeting for talks over David Beckham in Sardinia.

It blew United's hopes of conducting secret negotiations with Real over the England skipper behind Barca's back.

And Sandro Rosell, new Barca president Joan Laporta's right-hand man, gasped: "Oh no! If the story about this photograph is true, I will have to speak to the people at Manchester United and ask them what the situation is."

There is major embarrassment at both Old Trafford and Real's Bernabeu Stadium. And Barca will demand immediate answers from United chief executive Peter Kenyon, who led the talks with Real last Friday.

Laporta believed United would honour his contractual agreement with the club to buy Beckham in a deal worth up to £30million once he was voted in at the Nou Camp.

Now he is ready to consider reporting Real to FIFA if he can establish they approached Becks without permission from United.

Laporta rapped: "I don't think Madrid have stuck to FIFA rules.

"If I find out this is the case as far as David Beckham is concerned, we will have to take action."

Rosell added: "The contract for David Beckham was with us. If United have met with Real Madrid, I will have to talk to them."

Red-faced Kenyon was back at his desk yesterday after holidaying in the Mediterranean.

He stated only: "It would be inappropriate to comment on the matter at present."

SunSport revealed yesterday how Kenyon and United's managing director David Gill met with Pedro Lopez in Sardinia. Lopez is the 'fixer' for Real president Florentino Perez.

Also present was Real's powerful marketing director Jose Angel Sanchez. He is responsible for the Spanish giant's determination to increase its profile in the Far East, where Beckham is worshipped.

United and manager Alex Ferguson are now just waiting for Real's official bid, likely after the Spanish season ends on Sunday. In Sardinia, they suggested £15m plus Luis Figo. United insisted they still want cash only.

But Barcelona will not give up on Beckham and have an £8million-a-SEASON package to put to him.

Rosell revealed: "My next step is to contact his agent, Tony Stephens, and then we will do whatever is necessary to get the player.

"I am 80 per cent certain he will come to Barcelona. I have not heard from his own mouth that he does not want to come here. When I do hear that then I will start to be worried."

Antic's Confusion

BARCELONA boss Raddy Antic insists confusion still reigns over whether David Beckham will join the Spanish club.

The Barca coach said he is still waiting for assurances about his own future.

Joan Laporta was voted club president on Sunday night after his popularity soared following his pledge to bring the England captain to the Nou Camp.

Antic said: "It is very difficult to say whether Beckham will come.

"It was a big promise by Laporta and nobody knows if that promise will come true."

Antic added he had not been involved in the bid for Beckham and hinted it may be unwise for Barca to concentrate all their transfer funds on one player.

He said: "It's a lot of money for one player, rather than buying a few players to improve the side."

Valdano's Denial

REAL MADRID chief Jorge Valdano has cheekily denied SunSport's exclusive revelation that his club met with Manchester United to discuss David Beckham's transfer.

Valdano claimed that Real fixer Pedro Lopez's summit with Old Trafford directors Peter Kenyon and David Gill was just a chat about marketing opportunities.

Friday's three-hour meeting with Lopez, right-hand man of Real president Florentino Perez, ended with handshakes. As he arrived to give a lecture at Madrid's Palace Hotel last night director Valdano, with his tongue in his cheek, said: "Why would marketing men want to discuss David Beckham?"

Real told outrageous fibs when dismissing news of the signings of Zinedine Zidane and Ronaldo.

Yet asked if Becks would be on their Far East pre-season tour, Valdano said: "All I know is we at the club will be there."

Reds want Gunners

The 2003/04 FA Barclaycard Premiership fixtures are unveiled this Thursday, and United fans are hoping to face Arsenal on the opening weekend.

The Gunners led the League for most of the 2002/03 season before being overtaken by the Reds, and voters in ManUtd.com's poll want to meet Arsene Wenger's men straightaway next season.

35.9% of the votes cast in the poll to find out who United fans want to face in the season's opening match were for Arsenal, while United's crosstown rivals Manchester City were second with 18.1%.

Premiership new-boys Wolves - with their two ex-Reds Paul Ince and Denis Irwin - were the choice of 17.3% of voters in the poll which included United's three main Championship rivals, the three newly-promoted teams - and Man City.

Ronaldinho's Reds move uncertain

United target Ronaldinho is expected to stay at Paris St Germain next season.

PSG's president Francis Graille is "sure" the Brazilian star will remain in Paris next season and not move to United or Real Madrid, as has been widely suggested in the transfer rumour mill.

Graille said: "I don't doubt that one day soon, Ronaldinho will say to me: 'I'll stay'."

With a bid for you know who presumably given the green light after Joan Laporta was elected president of Barcelona on Sunday, Ronaldinho was seen as Beckham's likely replacement on the right side of midfield.

But PSG's president has moved to scupper the deal by claiming discussions to keep the talented 23-year-old at the Stade de France are underway. He said: "Discussions continue, but I'm sure he will be in Paris next year."

Ronaldinho would offer United the kind of fluidity Ferguson craves in his midfield quintet - Giggs and Scholes already interchange in midfield and attack, and it was expected the Brazilian was being targeted to offer the same dynamism on the right flank.

The summer of transfer sagas continues...

Real could 'steal' Beckham

Real Madrid could be set to land David Beckham for a knock-down price.
Real are battling with Barcelona to sign the Manchester United midfielder, but Beckham is understood to have ruled out a move to Barca.

That would prompt an embarrassing climbdown for new Barca president Joan Laporta, who had hinged his election campaign on signing Beckham.

But Barcelona told this website on Monday they still believe they can charm Beckham into moving to the Nou Camp.

Regardless, his apparent reluctance has given Real Madrid the ammunition to move in with a bid far lower than the deal agreed between Barcelona and United.

Laporta had promised to pay around £30m for Beckham but Real are reported to be lining up a bid of as little as £18m.

United may now accept a cash price of about £22m, having publicly declared their intent to sell Beckham.

United chief executive Peter Kenyon and director David Gill met with Real Madrid representatives in Sardinia over the weekend.

Madrid are understood to have scheduled a meeting with Beckham's advisers on 23 June.

The Spanish giants will then give the England captain four days to decide whether he wants to move to the Bernabeu.

Beckham will not be at the meeting, because he is scheduled to jet off on a promotional tour of the Far East on Friday.

Beckham is likely to command a salary of around £90,000 a week over five years and could share his image rights with the club.

The world hasn't ended

IT WAS the third minute of injury-time and David Beckham was preparing to take a free-kick in front of the Stretford End.

It was ominously close to the spot from which he had struck home the equaliser that had flown past the Greek goalkeeper and earned England automatic qualification for the 2002 World Cup.

Two seasons on and the Champions League semi- final between Manchester United and Real Madrid was deadlocked. Goalless at the Bernabeu a fortnight earlier, both defences had still to be breached at Old Trafford.

Beckham, sporting his new Don King hairstyle, wiped his hands on the famous white shirt, did that little half turn of his and ran towards the ball. It curled in a familiar arc round the United wall, away from the stranded Fabien Barthez and into the net.

Zidane, Raul, Ronaldo and Figo all gave chase but Beckham was away, going hell for leather towards the halfway line. He stopped in front of Alex Ferguson in the United dug-out, whipped off his jersey and 500 million TV viewers were treated to a close-up of the message on his T-shirt.

You ****.

Should this be the case, the Beckham backers in the great Goldenballs debate would claim a certain poetic - if rustic - justice. And yet Beckham's departure for Real Madrid could well turn out to be the best result for both player and club.

Those conned into believing the 'Beckham As Victim' scenario are treating the England skipper's departure as the End of the World. In fact, it is merely End of the World Part II, or maybe Part III.

The first came on May 18, 1997 when Eric Cantona announced his retirement six days before his 31st birthday and a week after United had claimed their fourth Premiership title in five years.

The King was dead - and the empire, surely, would crumble. When United completed the following season empty-handed, Ferguson was presumed to have lost the Midas touch.

Twelve months on, the team reshaped and the pieces falling sweetly into place, United won the Treble. This included the Champions League, a tournament Cantona had consistently failed to make an impression on in the way he had the Premiership.

Far from weakening United as many predicted, Cantona's departure paved the way to their greatest hour.

And so it could well be with Beckham. Though he is, naturally, sad to be leaving Old Trafford he is relishing the prospect of life in Madrid. This is hardly surprising since many in the know suggest he more than welcomed the interest when it came from Real.

Even to the extent of encouraging his agents to sound out the Spaniards IN BETWEEN this season's two Champions League quarter-finals with Real.

Becks: I had to say yes to Real

DAVID BECKHAM last night said he simply could not refuse to join Real Madrid.

Beckham, 28, left Manchester United in a £25million, four-year deal that will earn him £120,000 a week.

And the England skipper insisted: "I recognise this is an amazing opportunity for me at this stage in my career and a unique and exciting experience for my family.

"I know that I would always regret it later in life if I turned down the chance to play at another great club like Real Madrid that also has world-class players."

But Becks will have to give up his famous No7 shirt at the Bernabeu as it is worn by hero Raul.

He did not even ask for it as he holds the Spanish international in such high regard.

Beckham was initially upset United wanted to sell him but is now excited about what he describes as a 'unique' opportunity to join Real.

He added: "I would like to thank other clubs who were interested in signing me, including Barcelona, and I wish them every success in the future.

"But I really want to play in the Champions League.

"I wish Manchester United the best of luck and led by such an inspirational captain like Roy Keane I am sure they will continue to go from strength to strength."

Beckham will be unveiled by Real at a press conference on July 2.

He will be the Spanish club's top-paid player alongside Raul and Ronaldo.

The midfield superstar will also be offered bonuses of £300,000 for lifting the European Cup and £250,000 for winning the Spanish League.

Beckham and United boss Alex Ferguson buried the hatchet before the deal was done.

Ferguson said: "I have known David since he was 11 and it has been a pleasure to see him grow and develop into the player he has become.

"David has been an integral part of all the successes Manchester United have achieved in the last decade.

"I would like to wish him and his family every success in the future and thank him for his service to the club."

The transfer has been raced through after SunSport captured on camera officials from United and Real having a meeting in Sardinia.

Old Trafford chief executive Peter Kenyon and managing director David Gill were out there finalising the deal with Real president Florentino Perez's right-hand man Pedro Lopez last Friday.

They did not want to make any announcement until next Monday, after the Spanish League has finished. But our exclusive story has brought that decision forward.

Kenyon said: "While we are sad to see David go after so many great years at Old Trafford, we believe this is a good deal for the club and we now look forward to building on the success of last season's title."

Beckham's agents SFX said: "Manchester United have been professional, fair and open in all the dealings with David.

"He will always have the greatest memories of his time at Old Trafford."

5 DAYS TO ROCK FOOTIE WORLD

THE transfer coup that will see David Beckham sign for Real Madrid today has unfolded over the past five days. SunSport's NEIL CUSTIS explains the sequence of events.

FRIDAY, JUNE 13. Unlucky for Becks if he had hopes of staying at United. Chief exec Peter Kenyon, managing director David Gill and Real president Florentino Perez's right-hand man Pedro Lopez meet in Sardinia. After three hours, they shake on a £25million deal.

SATURDAY, JUNE 14. Kenyon talks with Beckham's agent Tony Stephens to try to work out a peace pact with the player. Stephens also has talks with Madrid to discuss the four-year contract, worth £120,000-a-week.

SUNDAY, JUNE 15. Joan Laporta is elected Barcelona president with the biggest number of votes in the club's history. His popularity shot up after he revealed he wanted Beckham. When SunSport tells Laporta's man Sandro Rosell that United had met Real, he is shaken.

MONDAY, JUNE 16. SunSport discloses Rosell's reaction to the news that Real had stolen a march on their hated rivals and Laporta is left feeling double-crossed. The final details of the deal with Madrid are put together.

TUESDAY, JUNE 17. United and Stephens prepare statements to reveal officially Beckham's move to Real. The announcement has been brought forward a week because of SunSport's picture on Monday showing the main players at the Sardinia meeting. Beckham flies out to the Far East for a sponsorship tour.

Don't look Beck in anger

IT takes a special talent to leave Sir Bobby Charlton open-mouthed in amazement but the Manchester United-daft youngster from East London managed it.

The kid was an 11-year-old David Beckham and he had just achieved the highest points total at Charlton's Soccer Skills Tournament.

His prize was a trip to Spain, to train with the nation's champion youth team - Barcelona.

How ironic that, some 17 years later, he would snub the chance to return, in favour of joining their deadliest rivals.

Beckham joined United in July 1991 as a trainee and a year later helped win the FA Youth Cup.

Later that year, in September, he made his first-team debut at Brighton, four months before he had even signed a professional contract.

His first senior start came at Port Vale in the League Cup.

Becks had to wait another year, until November 1994, for his opening first-team goal, a 20-yard drive in the 4-0 Euro win over Galatasaray.

A loan spell at Preston to gain first-team experience followed, before he returned and made his Premiership bow in April 1995 against Leeds. An England debut in Moldova swiftly followed, as his talent began to shine through - not least with THAT goal from the halfway line at Wimbledon seven years ago.

The strike changed his life and helped him lift the 1997 PFA Young Player award.

He netted a stunning goal in the 98 World Cup finals against Colombia, before disaster struck with his dismissal for a kick at Argentine Diego Simeone.

But he bounced back from his darkest hour to help win the Treble the following season.

Then caretaker-boss Peter Taylor made him national skipper - a job he retained through the 2002 World Cup finals to the present.

Is there a place for him?

REAL MADRID admit they do not yet know where they are going to play David Beckham - or if he will even get into the team.

Bernabeu bigwigs were crowing last night after clinching the England skipper's signature and insisted: The best just got better.

But Jorge Valdano, the club's director of sport, declared: "We are delighted with David's arrival. It's a strategic signing. He enhances our brand name.

"However I'm sure that Figo will always play next season so the question now is, where does Beckham play?"

And Becks would have been horrified to hear manager Vicente Del Bosque confirm: "It is far too soon to try and say where Beckham will play. We will have to wait and see.

"I think he is the complete midfield player - but that means he can play in more than one position in the midfield and when he is used in different positions he can adapt."

Del Bosque's comments could mean a nightmare for England boss Sven Goran Eriksson, who faces the prospect of his captain being shunted about Real Madrid's midfield to suit the Spaniards, who dare not offend Luis Figo.

Club president Florentino Perez owes his presidency to him for agreeing to abandon Barcelona for Real three years ago - so the Portuguese winger appears to hold all the aces.

Del Bosque added: "Beckham is a football symbol. We will try and find an ideal place for him to play in our team but Figo will be in it - and I hope the two can play together."

Real supporters welcomed the news that Beckham will be unveiled in Spain next month to join the team's superstar ranks. But they warned the England captain has to prove himself.

Office worker Guillermo Moreno, 28, said: "We've got the famous five - Figo, Ronaldo, Zidane and Raul as well as Roberto Carlos. How can anyone make that team better?

"Beckham has to prove that he has the class to wear the white shirt."

Roberto Gonzalez, 37, who runs a physical fitness centre, said: "Beckham may well sell shirts - but can he play in the best team in the world?"

Mum-of-two Conchita Martinez added: "It has been Beckham, Beckham and Beckham for days now. Is he a footballer or an actor? Now we are going to find out."

However, Pedro Montes, 58, was less enthusiastic at the prospect of another Englishman joining his side.

He said: "Steve McManaman has been a great success but he couldn't make the first team this season.

"Many of my mates believe Beckham will turn out to be one of the great fiascos that my club has been involved in."

Many United fans gave Beckham's departure a cautious thumbs-up.

The Red Devils have scooped their biggest-ever transfer fee by offloading him for £25million.

And Darren Aspinall, 29, from Rochdale, was typical of many supporters when he said: "To get so much for him in the current transfer market is good business, especially for a 28-year-old."

Tony Britland, 25, of Heywood, argued: "I think we could have got MORE money for him, to be honest. But it was obvious he was going to go."

Lee Watson, 22, of Chorlton, added: "United can really strengthen the team with the money they've got for Beckham, so it's a good deal."

Former striker Joe Jordan agreed and condemned suggestions that boss Alex Ferguson dumped Beckham - who scored 85 goals in 394 United games - because of a clash of personalities.

Jordan, a star at Old Trafford from 1977-81, said: "The manager is the man who knows what's going on and what is best for the club. Sir Alex Ferguson and has been proven right more often than he has been proven wrong.

"Whatever he has done, he has done for no one but Manchester United.

"Manchester United will come out of this with a lot of money that can be used to invest in the team."

Former defender Paul McGrath, 43, who played at Old Trafford from 1982-89, also backed Fergie's decision to sell.

He said: "United are desperate to win the European Cup again and, with the money they get for Beckham, they can maybe sign two or three top-quality players."

Becks and Fergie bury hatchet

DAVID Beckham and Sir Alex Ferguson buried the hatchet last night after the star player was sold to Real Madrid for £25million.

The long-running transfer speculation over Beckham’s future was finally settled when Manchester United clinched a deal with the Spanish giants.

And Becks held out an olive branch to Fergie, with whom he has been at war for months.

The 28-year-old England skipper said: “I would like to publicly thank Sir Alex Ferguson for making me the player I am today.
“I will always hold precious memories of my time at Manchester United and Old Trafford as well as the players, who I regard as part of my family, and the brilliant fans who have given me so much support over the years and continue to do so.

“I recognise that this is an amazing opportunity for me at this stage in my career and a unique and exciting experience for my family.”

Last night Old Trafford boss Fergie — who accidentally hit Becks in the face with a flying boot during a dressing-room row — led tributes to the ace midfielder.

He said: “I have known David since he was 11 and it has been a pleasure to see him grow and develop into the player he has become.

“He has been an integral part of all the successes that Manchester United have achieved in the last decade. I would like to wish him and his family all the best for the future.”

And club chief executive Peter Kenyon said: “We would like to wish David all the best.”

Becks could be on his way to Real Madrid’s Bernabeu stadium as early as next month under a four-year deal which earns him £120,000 a week.

Last night Real fans were jubilant that Becks was about to join their megastar squad.

Office worker Guillermo Moreno, 28, said: “He’s a great signing for the club, which is already the best in the world.”

But back in England, many United fans were gutted at the loss of their star midfielder.

Barman Adrian Hughes, 21, said: “United is all about Beckham, he plays his socks off for United. His heart is red through and through.”

Flying away ... Beckhams at Heathrow yesterday

Stuart Daniel, 23, said: “It’s a tragedy — he’s our best player.”

Office clerk Jane MacKenzie, 25, said: “It’s awful. I’m really upset. Beckham was the only glamour in the team. I think the club has treated him terribly, but good luck to him.”

Meanwhile, Beckham and wife Victoria headed off to Japan yesterday — on an Arthur Daley-style tour that will net him £10million in ten days.

Millions of pounds are being paid by a Japanese firm selling every-day items such as greetings cards and chocolates.

But the pin-up, idolised in the Far East, is bizarrely also plugging second-hand motors.

Becks is pictured on Tokyo billboards holding a toy motor with the slogan “I Love Cars”.

He is also being shown in TV ads holding a battered car door with spots on it — next to a dalmatian dog.

Now Fergie's in for Geremi

ALEX FERGUSON wants Cameroon international Geremi to take David Beckham's place at Manchester United.

Talks are already under way with Real Madrid over a £9million deal for the tough-tackling midfielder.

But the move is separate to Becks' switch yesterday.

Geremi, 24, won Ferguson over with his determined displays while on loan at Middlesbrough last season.

The player is keen to remain in England and is convinced he can prove a huge success at Old Trafford.

Geremi said: "After Real Madrid, United are the team I'd choose above all others.

"Alex Ferguson has had many good things to say about me and not every footballer can claim that."

Geremi is in Paris preparing to play for his country in the Confederations Cup.

But he is keen to sort out his future after Boro were unable to raise the cash to keep him at the Riverside.

Boro raised their offer to £4m but were never anywhere near Real's valuation.

Ron On The Way...

RONALDINHO is ready to seal his £10million move to Manchester United - and admits the beast is replacing the beauty.

While glamour-boy David Beckham heads for Real Madrid, the buck-toothed Brazilian arrives from Paris St Germain.

His agent and brother Roberto Assis meets PSG today to discuss the Old Trafford switch.

World Cup winner Ronaldinho, 23, will play as a second striker.

And he said: "Beckham is good-looking and I am ugly but everyone has got a different kind of beauty.

"I admire Beckham - I don't think he just sells T-shirts. I am only interested in what he can do on the pitch."

Wrong Move

MARCEL DESAILLY has told Manchester United they would be wrong to force Fabien Barthez out of Old Trafford like David Beckham.

The keeper, 31, has been assured he is certain of his place when France kick off the Confederations Cup against Colombia in Lyon today.

And Chelsea star Desailly, who will captain the French, said: "People say Fabien has to leave United. But he's still one of the best in the world and that's what matters.

"He maybe has some problems with Manchester, but there's no reason for him to stop.

"He's still definitely one of the best and I am sure he'll show that for France in the Confederations Cup."

Arsenal duo Robert Pires and Sylvain Wiltord, plus United defender Mikael Silvestre are also set to line up against Colombia.

Tosh: Bern 'em up Becks

DAVID BECKHAM has made the greatest decision of his life by agreeing to join Real Madrid, according to John Toshack.

Tosh, who twice managed the Spanish giants, insists Becks will quickly forget the heartbreak of leaving his beloved Old Trafford when he discovers what life is all about at the Bernabeu.

And the Welshman insisted: "If you get the opportunity to join Real, nobody in their right mind says no.

"It is debatable which is the biggest club in the world - but it is hardly a retrograde step to leave United for Real.

"From my experience, the city of Madrid is tailor-made for David - although I cannot claim that what suits Tosh would suit Posh!

"But for Beckham, it could be his finest stage, his finest hour."

Toshack's glittering career as a manager has taken him to Wales, Italy, Portugal, France and Turkey.

But Spain has always had the biggest influence on him - and he believes Beckham can fall under its spell, too.

The former Liverpool star added: "I spent 14 years working in the country and loved every minute of it.

"Even the bad times were enjoyable because, when you get up in the morning and see the sun shining, there is still a spring in your step.

"It is a different lifestyle and I believe a better one than we have in the UK. Apart from the obvious difference in the climate, the Spanish use the 24 hours of their day better than the Brits.

"For six months of the year, we get up in the dark to go to work and it is dark again when we return home. What then? Maybe a couple of pints at the local and then the routine starts all over.

"In Spain, you work until lunchtime. Everything closes down for the afternoon siesta, then you work until 8.30 in the evening.

"Instead of the pub, you can enjoy pavement cafes and restaurants and watch the sun set. I know which routine I prefer!

"The Spanish are more laid-back. They know how to enjoy themselves and life proceeds at a slower pace.

"They treat their football very seriously - but the players are not subjected to the same hassle they can experience in England.

"I have homes in San Sebastian and Majorca and it is always a pleasure to go back to them.

"Frankly, you cannot compare Manchester and Madrid. But it is not as though the Beckhams would be moving to the other side of the world - it is only a couple of hours away by plane.

"Beckham should view this move as an honour and a privilege. I would not want him to look back on his career and have any regrets about missing out on this move.

"How many players get the chance to play for two of the most glamorous clubs on the planet?

"OK, his pride has been hurt by some of the things that have happened recently.

"But the bottom line is football has become a major worldwide industry and the Beckham name is one of the most famous of all."

Toshack, 54, offered some useful advice to help the Beckhams settle in their new environment.

He insisted: "The first thing they must do is learn the language. That is an absolute essential.

"As for integrating into the Real set-up, I don't see a problem for David.

"He strikes me as a modest, level-headed type - despite all the hype which surrounds him - and he doesn't need me to tell him he will be surrounded by a galaxy of superstars, so he won't be the only centre of attention.

"The football is different and it could make him a better player.

"Of course, he will be in the goldfish bowl to start with - but the media will only be interested in what he does on the pitch and, anyway, he seems perfectly capable of handling all the showbiz stuff.

"I am told he is one of the most dedicated trainers at United and that will impress the Real fans.

"Instead of United's Fortress Carrington - where everyone is locked out - Real's training sessions are conducted in public.

"There are a few thousand fans watching every routine, as well as the inevitable TV cameras and an army of Press and photographers. If you have a poor session even that will be reported in the papers the next day!

"The Real coach is lucky if he gets one session a week with his players behind closed doors.

"But, discipline-wise, he will discover it is less rigid than at United and once he has settled down I can promise he will learn to love everything about being a Real Madrid player."

Toshack can see both sides of the argument as United fans debate whether the England skipper should have been allowed to leave.

But he backs Red Devils manager Alex Ferguson, who seems to have sanctioned today's deal.

Madrid dig deep again

Real Madrid's £24.5m deal to land England captain David Beckham is not the first time they have spent big to land one of the game's superstars.
The Spanish giants also broke the bank to lure Nicolas Anelka, Luis Figo, Zinedine Zidane and Ronaldo to the Bernabeu.

Here, BBC Sport documents Madrid's big-money deals:
Anelka: £23.5m

The French striker joined Real in 1999 from English Premiership outfit Arsenal.

Quick with an eye for goal and potent shot, he never fulfilled his potential despite helping the Spanish giants win the Champions League.

He was eventually offloaded to Paris St Germain a year later for £20m.

Figo: £37m

The Portuguese midfielder earned the wrath of the Barcelona fans by swapping the Nou Camp for the Bernabeu in 2000.

Not even a world record transfer fee as compensation could calm their anger.
But Figo shrugged off the venom being aimed in is direction to land the Fifa World Footballer of the Year award in 2001.

Zidane: £45.7m

Madrid shattered the world transfer record again to lure the French midfield maestro from Juventus.

Despite his sizeable frame, Zidane boasts dazzling skills and a wonderful ability to unlock even the tightest of opposition defences

Ronaldo: £28.5m

The Brazilian got off to a slow start after arriving in Madrid less than 100% fit following the 2002 World Cup.

But the former Barcelona striker is now beginning to fire on all cylinders, finding the back of the net with increasing regularity.

Beckham: £24.5m

Madrid initially claimed they were not interested in signing the England captain.

But when Barcelona made it clear they wanted to bring Beckham to Spain, the nine-times European champions moved quickly to sign another superstar.

Laporta in upbeat mood

New Barcelona president Joan Laporta is refusing to be too downhearted despite missing out on David Beckham.
Laporta had based virtually the whole of his presidential campaign on his promise to sign the England captain from Manchester United.

But Beckham has decided to move to Spanish rivals Real Madrid instead, claiming that the lure of Champions League football was too great.

Barca will not play in Europe's top club competition next season after a disappointing La Liga campaign.

"We couldn't reach agreement with Beckham's representatives but our supporters shouldn't be too worried. We have other options," Laporta told a Spanish television station.

One of those options could be Ronaldinho, who is also a target for Real Madrid and Manchester United.

Barca press officer, Juanjo Castillo, said: "We have read the news that David Beckham has gone to Real Madrid and it has come like a great bomb for us, it is a big shock.

"I feel disappointed, we felt this morning that we were very close to talks with Beckham.

"We are not going to say that we do not mind if Beckham does not come here, but it is not the end for Barcelona.

"We would not have tried so hard if we did, but it is not the end for Barcelona, he was a piece of the great work that we are doing here.

"If he has decided to go somewhere else then we will work to bring in other players of similar importance as Beckham.

"It is no secret that Ronaldinho is one of the players we are looking at, he has always been on our list as have other top players.

"A deal is very close with Ronaldinho."

Pressure on Beckham

The level of expectation for David Beckham will be huge following his move to Real Madrid.

In England, new signings are generally allowed a period of time to settle in.

Beckham will not get that in Spain, where the fans are notoriously impatient.
But Beckham is a big-time player who will be able to handle the pressure that will be heaped upon him.

English football will miss him. This country has lost its biggest star and one of its best players.

He is such a talented player and has been an integral part of one of the best and most successful sides in the world.

There has been a lot of talk that Beckham was sold because of a problem he had with Sir Alex Ferguson.

I don't think that is the case. In my view, his transfer is a financial decision, in keeping with how football works these days.

The key is whether Manchester United plc have got the right amount of money for the England captain.

And even more important is how they spend their windfall.

There is no guarantee they will be able to sign a world-class player to replace Beckham.

What is certain, though, is that the person who does fill Beckham's boots will get time to adapt to life at Old Trafford.

The same cannot be said of Beckham.

Ferguson's most wanted

With David Beckham's transfer to Real Madid now secure, Manchester United coach Sir Alex Ferguson can finally turn his thoughts to how he intends to spend his new-found millions.

The Man Utd boss has made little attempt to hide his admiration for Brazilian ace Ronaldinho, but there remains the possibility that Beckham's replacement could come from closer to home.

BBC Sport takes at look at five players rumoured to be at the top of Old Trafford's 'wanted list'.

The Brazilian made such an impact in his youth that Paris Saint-German broke the world record transfer fee for a teenager to bring him to the club.

An international regular, 'Little Ronaldo' cemented his reputation as one of the world's most dangerous players during Brazil's victorious 2002 World Cup campaign.

After returning late from the winter break, he has since fallen out with his club and looks certain to move on this summer.

Ferguson could have a huge fight on his hands persuading him to move to Man Utd, however, with Real, Barcelona, AC Milan and Inter all in the hunt for his signature.

With 16 goals this season, Harry Kewell is admired throughout the Premiership as one of the league's most potent players.

After making his name as Lee Sharpe's deputy, Kewell has become an Elland Road favourite, though the club are unlikely to cling on to his services.

Despite being offered a reported £2.5m-a-year deal to stay, the 24-year-old has his sights on a move away, with Arsenal the current favourites to land the Aussie star.

David Beckham's recent decision to shun Barcelona will have done little for United's chances of attracting Kluivert, should they choose to pursue him.

As a player, he made his name at Ajax, scoring 39 league goals in 70 games.

An unsuccessful spell at AC Milan followed, before Barca recruited him for £8.2m.

He has since notched up his 100th goal for the club and equalled compatriot Dennis Bergkamp's record of 37 goals for Holland.

Kluivert's strength and skill with both feet make him a target for the world's top clubs.

But, after publically committing himself to Barca, he seems unlikely to readily agree to a move away.

The Ireland star enjoyed a superb World Cup and his regular man-of-the-match performances for Blackburn make him an ideal target for Old Trafford's money men.

Liverpool have reportedly offered £12.5m for Duff's services, but Blackburn boss Graeme Souness is holding out for a higher offer, so certain is he of his midfielder's talents.

Already linked with Old Trafford, Manchester United chief executive, Peter Kenyon, told BBC Sport in April: "If Sir Alex wants to buy someone, he will have to sell someone else."

With those conditions now met, United are in the enviable position to outbid anyone should they consider Duff worthy of the price tag.

After initially impressing under former Leeds boss David O'Leary, Robinson has displaced first choice goalkeeper Nigel Martyn.

Along with Richard Wright, Nicky Weaver and Everton's Steve Simonsen, he has been tipped as an England goalkeeper of the future.

The former England U21 star insists he will stay at the Yorkshire club if he is offered an extension to his contract but he has yet to discuss his future with new chairman Dr John McKenzie.

"In March I went to see the club chairman Peter Ridsdale," he said recently. "He assured me that the club had no intention of selling me. He was quite categoric. I would not be sold."

Beckham mania still rages in Japan to delight of corporate sponsors
TOKYO, June 18 (AFP) - England football superstar David Beckham is hot property in Japan where it is his good looks rather than his undoubted sporting talent that nets huge profits for the companies marketing his image.
Japanese girls want to be with him and men want to be him regardless of whether he plays for Manchester United or Real Madrid, which ended weeks of feverish speculation by confirming late Tuesday it was signing Becks for 25 million euros (29.6 million dollars).

"His face, his style, his image are more important than his sport," said Reiko Suzuki, research director at Dentsu Communications Institute, a consumer and lifestyle research firm owned by advertising giant Dentsu.

"I don't think many Japanese people actually watch Beckham play football," she told AFP.

The England captain was kicking off an Asian tour carefully stage-managed by his corporate sponsors in Tokyo Wednesday.

Foreign media have been barred from his press conferences in Japan to avoid the risk of the wrong sort of coverage in Europe, but the domestic press will be encouraged to satisfy the appetite of a hungry Japanese public.

"I love Beckham because he is so good looking," said seven-year-old fan Moka Takahashi, out shopping at Japan's only Manchester United store in Tokyo with her father Ryo, 29, another devotee of the English midfielder.

Beckham appeals to all ages.

"Oh, I really like him, he looks so kind," gushed Toshiko Kawatami, a 62-year-old housewife also browsing in the football shop.

The footballer's face stares out from billboards, television screens and flyers in train carriages across the country, advertising a range of goods from chocolate almonds to mobile phones.

"He is one of the top names you can think of for an advertisement board," said Dentsu's Suzuki.

"He is handsome and good at sport... Japanese people also like the fact he looks after his wife and children, plus he has money. He basically has everything."

The football World Cup co-hosted by Japan and South Korea last year elevated Beckham to superhero status here and 12 months on he is still a major asset for the firms that can afford to hire him to promote their products.

Auto giant Toyota admitted it had been interested in striking a deal with the footballer but decided otherwise, possibly due to money, said company spokeswoman Nami Kanda.

But beauty product and clinic operator TBC and confectioner Meiji Seika Kaisha felt he was well worth the cash.

"His character is really cool, he fits well with the products we want to sell," said Nariaki Hishiya, a spokesman for Meiji Seika, which uses Beckham to promote chocolate-coated almonds.

"We started the advertising campaign last December and our sales doubled that month compared with the same time a year earlier. Since then our profits are up 10 percent. It was definitely a good investment," Hishiya said.

The footballer with male model looks has filmed two adverts for Meiji Seika and is due to help launch another "secret" product in September.

Beckham and his popstar wife Victoria made their world-first promotional appearance together in an advert for TBC, where they mix simpering in front of the camera with playful pillow fights.

"The advert for TBC with his wife, that was perfect, a real hit," said Dentsu's Suzuki, adding that the former Posh from the Spice Girls was also a big name in Japan.

Media reports have said the Japanese adverts have already scored the Beckhams more than 400 million yen (3.4 million dollars).

Under a two-year deal brokered by British parent Vodafone, local mobile phone operator J-Phone is also able to cash in on Beckham mania in Japan.

The footballer has also worked his magic for Manchester United, ensuring its Tokyo store is a huge success, said Kenji Ideta, a spokesman for Japan Sports Vision, which markets the club here.

But the transfer to Real Madrid would hurt sales, he admitted.

"Japanese people believe that Manchester United equals Beckham and so it will deal a great blow to our business if he leaves this team," said Ideta.

Other sponsors are not so worried about the move because they have contracts with Beckham rather than his club.

But, like all things in Japan, Beckham fever will eventually cool off as the public finds a new idol.

"Japanese people get bored easily. I think (his popularity) will continue for another year perhaps," predicted Suzuki from Dentsu.

Supporters' group slams United board

Manchester United's board have been accused of 'taking leave of their senses'' in agreeing to sell David Beckham to Real Madrid for £25million.

Only last week the plc struck a provisional deal with Barcelona president elect Joan Laporta, thought to be worth around £30million.

Old Trafford pressure group Shareholders United tonight reacted with astonishment to the deal for the England captain.

Spokesman Oliver Houston said: 'The key thing for us as supporter shareholders is that any money for any player is re-invested properly.

'It is re-invested in facilities for the supporters, it is re-invested in building up the youth team and in providing the manager with enough resources to strengthen the first team.

'If this was a decision to get the biggest cash windfall they could get clearly the plc have failed in their duty. As David Beckham is the jewel in the crown many people will be sad to see him go.

'Supporters put up with the fact that Beckham was being sold in the belief United would get a significant windfall. That doesn't appear to be the case. I don't know who has taken leave of their senses at the plc. Someone has taken their eye off the ball at Old Trafford.

'To get someone in of Beckham's calibre is going to command a fairly high transfer tag and significant wages demands. We assumed some master plan was at work but that is not the case. It is bizarre. They seem to have shot themselves in the foot.''

Houston believes Madrid could not believe their luck when United struck a deal with Joan Laporta, subject to conditions, one of which was him being elected as president of Barcelona.

'It was amateur hour when they decided to publicly accept this punitive bid from a man who wasn't even in a position to close the deal, ' said Houston.

'The moment that happened it became almost inevitable he was going to go to Real Madrid and became equally inevitable the ball was in their court. They could clearly match personal terms and clearly provide Beckham with more of what he is looking for.

'He was obviously not going to Barcelona, who are not playing Champions League football. Madrid must have been falling off their seats with joy when United accepted that bid. To see a deal involving United being done so publicly was very unusual.'

MANCHESTER UNITED AGREES TRANSFER OF DAVID BECKHAM TO REAL MADRID

Manchester United today reached agreement for the transfer of David Beckham to Real Madrid for a fee of €35m (approximately £25m).

The deal is expected to be completed in July, conditional upon approval by the boards of Manchester United and Real Madrid, and on the provision of satisfactory payment guarantees.

David Beckham has agreed personal terms with Real Madrid and expects to sign his new contract with the club on completion.

Sir Alex Ferguson said: "I’ve known David since he was 11 years of age, and it’s been a pleasure to see him grow and develop into the player he has become. David has been an integral part of all the successes that Manchester United have achieved in the last decade. I would like to wish him and his family every success in the future, and thank him for his service to the club."

Peter Kenyon, chief executive of Manchester United, said: "While we are sad to see David go after so many great years at Old Trafford, we believe this is a good deal for the club, and we now look forward to building on the success of last season’s championship title. We wish David all the best in his new career in Spain and thank him for his fantastic contribution to the team’s achievements in the last decade. We have worked closely with David’s advisors throughout the past few weeks and thank them for their co-operation."

Under the terms of the agreement, €7.5m of the total fee will be paid upon completion of the sale, and €17.5m over the following four years in equal instalments. The remaining €10m is conditional upon Real Madrid's performances in the UEFA Champions League. Under the deal, €1.25m is payable in each of the next four seasons conditional on Real Madrid qualifying for the Champions League, and a further €1.25m is payable each season conditional on Real Madrid reaching the quarter-finals of the Champions League over the same period. All the deferred payments will be backed by acceptable guarantees.

Lou not shocked by Becks departure

Ex-Red Lou Macari says that he's not surprised that David Beckham has been sold to Real Madrid by Manchester United.

The Reds midfielder told Sky Sports News that Becks effectively signed his own death warrant at Old Trafford with his off-field showbiz lifestyle.

"I think it was a lack of discipline that did for David, as it did for Dwight Yorke," Lou said after the £20 million deal was made official on Tuesday evening.

"The last half of the season, David did some things that will have rubbed Sir Alex up the wrong way, and the turning point was when he was left on the bench for some big games.

"When you upset the manager there's only going to be one loser, and as he wanted to stay at United David is the loser. He knew the rules, he'd been at United for over ten years."

Lou also believes that a lack of form on the pitch didn't help Becks' case for staying at the Theatre of Dreams, especially with the Boss needing funds for a rebuilding programme.

"He didn't play well last season," he insisted.

"He won MUTV's player of the year, but I didn't agree with that. The powers that be have decided to cash in now rather than let him walk away for nothing in two years' time.

"They won't just bring on player in, they will be looking at two or three. They want to win the Premiership and the Champions League, and needed money to finance new players to do that."

Macari went on to say that while Beckham's departure may be mourned by fans now, they will soon have a new hero to idolise.

"Sir Alex knows when it's time for players to move on," he said.

"Players don't come back to haunt United. Once you leave, you're pretty much forgotten."

Beckham was heading for the Far East when the official announcement was made by United, and is expected to have a medical with the Bernabeu club on July 1.

FanTalk: Fans react to David's departure

Fans from around the world have sent us their reactions to the now confirmed sale of David Beckham. Here is a selection of the emails we received in the first hour following United's announcement of the deal with Real...

"It's disappointing, truly disappointing. I'm speechless such a solid figure in the United line-up could be sold to the highest bidder as though he was bench material. Real Madrid got the better end of this deal. They're clearly striking more and more talent as the seasons roll by."
Brendan, Boston, USA

"Sold down the river... what a disgrace... I can't believe it... £25million & not in cash... it's total cr** & I am devastated. The board should resign... I certainly have no confidence in them & my shares are going to be sold tomorrow."
Malcolm Dunn

"Surely Madrid have got a bargain! How are we able to let Beckham go for £22m, when Barcelona were offering £30m? It would have been a good deal for the money and Guti. However, if we can bring Ronaldinho to the club and a new keeper It will ease the pain. If we get the Brazilian for £9m then £22m for Beckham may start to seem like a good deal."
Jon Owen, York

"I hope every United fan can read this message. I love United with all my heart and I know all of you do too. It will be very difficult to accept that Becks is leaving to Real Madrid. But we have to get over it. We all wanted him to stay, but now there's nothing to do, he is leaving, so now let's wait for his replacement to come and hope that his replacement can help United to win the Champions League. And one last thing, I really hope that United and Madrid meet in the Champions League. I want Becks to feel his error on leaving United, when he comes back to Old Trafford with his white uniform, he will feel the pressure and I'm sure United will beat Real Madrid and win the UEFA Champions League next season... come on United!!!"
Alexander Alexeev

"Who does Sir Alex think he is? He made Jaap Stam leave us, and now Becks? He's gone over the line now. By all means, Fergie has done some great work for United, but I think it is time for changes, 17 years is a long time, it is better to make the changes before it is too late, and we are old fashioned. I wish David Beckham all the luck, and hope that Sir Alex Ferguson will stop pushing his players out of the club, and that this is his last season, I want Martin O'Neill. I also hope that United will buy 3 or 4 new players. Last of all, I am very disappointed over Becks' price, Barca was going to give more for him."
Leif Ostgard

"Might as well hand Real Madrid the European Cup now. Real are the benchmark in European football and we sell them one of our best players. How are we meant to compete? Unless we sign a couple of top class players we can kiss goodbye to the Premiership as well."
Craig Hudson

"It's a real pity to see David Beckham leave the Premiership. It's not that long ago (at the beginning of the Nineties) that people were bemoaning the lack of charismatic stars in football. Now we have lost our biggest star to the league with which the Premiership vies for the title of 'Best League in the World'. I don't think I'll be able to argue that the Premiership is bigger and better than the Spanish league anymore. For such a talented and successful man, David Beckham has retained his humility and ability to work hard. Good luck to him with his new club."
Robert Wilson

rEAT this..
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I keep reading these letters from people expressing their sympathy for David Beckham, the way in which he has been 'treated like a piece of meat' by ManYoo.

Let's be realistic now. Firstly, the man has compromised his own career at ManYoo through his obsession with his own celebrity. Furthermore, he has been proved as being expendable, he did after all sit on the bench as a reserve striker performed admirably in his right wing role in crucial Premiership matches last season.

Thus he chooses to live a lifestyle that his manager (and for all I don't like saying it, a damn good manager) does not believe is healthy for a professional footballer, and at the same time doesn't merit selection for important games based on his performance and those of other players.

And then they can get £25 million by selling him... of course they're going to do it! They may also feel that £100,000 a week is a bit excessive for a some-time substitute.

I tire of hearing about how he 'loves his children' and what a good father he is as well. Most people love their children don't they... I'm sure Paul Scholes probably does if he's got them (although that would involve a certain lack of standards on the ladies behalf).

The point is, Beckham chooses to do his parenting in public... we are always reminded of his kids and his family life. This doesn't mean he's better or worse parent does it? It just means Joe Public can read about it for 30p a day. If anything, he risks exposing his children to too much publicity, and is also guilty of dressing them in seriously silly clothes...

Please people, if we are going to be dishing out are sympathy, there really are more deserving causes.

Old Trafford needs new faces to justify transfer

Sir Alex Ferguson, like the fan of horseracing that he is, knows that selling David Beckham for around £25m is a safe bet and a good return in anybody's money. However, that philosophy is not always popular with the punters.

The Manchester United manager will be tested by the way he appeases those who think selling Beckham is related to personalities. However, he can dispel the memory of Beckham by signing players who will improve his side and win that ultimate prize, the Champions' League.

Ferguson is now in a stronger position to move back in for Paris St-Germain's Ronaldinho, the type of match-winning talent his team has often lacked post-Cantona. He will, however, cost about £15m. Real should also now be out of the equation.

United also want to sign a midfield understudy to Roy Keane. Nantes' Cameroonian Eric Djemba-Djemba is the subject of a £2.5m bid, a deal that should be completed after the Confederations Cup. United would prefer to sign Claude Makelele but Real refused to include him as part of the Beckham deal and individually he would cost a prohibitive £15m.

United have already lined up the American goalkeeper Tim Howard for £1.8m. He is cheap but may prove to be significant if he can become the No 1 choice as many insiders believe he can. Sunderland's striker David Bellion is also joining - the fee, which is subject to a tribunal should be around £1m.

Ferguson is strong enough to take the criticism and wise enough to explain the Beckham sale, but the true mark of whether it was a wise move or not is in the way the void is filled. Ferguson has a habit of getting these things right.

However, while the sale of Paul Ince, which was criticised at the time, worked out perfectly, selling the Dutch centre-half, Jaap Stam, was ultimately questioned because of the calibre of the replacements, notably Laurent Blanc.

There is unlikely to be a straight replacement for Beckham, his departure may also see a change of style. There will be no one to take those memorable free-kicks. But if there is someone to hold aloft the Champions' League trophy all will be forgiven.

New surface at Old Trafford

It’s something of a regular sight now at Old Trafford - the hallowed turf torn up, and a new surface being relaid.

The old pitch was ripped up last week as preparations for the new season begin in earnest.

With the 2003/04 Premiership fixtures being announced this Thursday, Old Trafford groundstaff have been working round the clock to get the new surface primed for another season of top-flight football.

What looks like the sort of pitch conditions Chelsea's players would feel comfortable playing on is actually the base of what will be a brand new surface for the start of the new campaign.

RUUD MORE IMPORTANT THAN BECKS - FANS CHIEF

Manchester United fanzine editor Andy Mitten believes Barcelona president Joan Laporta is a ``decent, honest and credible man'' who ``has not lied to anybody'' in his bid to sign David Beckham.

``He's a decent, honest and credible man. He's clearly used the Beckham gambit to increase his popularity and he has not lied to anybody. He said he had struck a deal with Manchester United but not that Beckham was definitely coming to the club.

``The fact that Manchester United were prepared to sell David Beckham undermined his position at the club and I don't blame Laporta for doing what he's done.

Mitten believes Beckham cannot have too many complaints about the handling of the transfer, given the way he is promoting the Beckham brand in the United States and the Far East.

``He can't have it both ways, can he? That's the nature of football, there's very little sentiment. David will have seen great players like Jaap Stam leave and he knows the club waits for nobody,'' he said.

``If David left United the stadium would still sell out and the club would still be challenging for the title and the Champions League.''

Asked why he thought United had gone public to say they had accepted a bid from Laporta - who at the time had no connection with Barca - Mitten said: ``To take the lid off the speculation and to say they were prepared to sell.

``Some fans were outraged but a lot of the mail we're getting suggests they are prepared to back the manager and they can understand the reasons for the sale.

``David has been a good servant for Manchester United but he is not indispensable and he is not the most important player at the club.

``I think if it was Ruud van Nistelrooy being touted around, there would be outrage.

``It's a footballing decision. Sir Alex is hard-nosed because he needs to be, but just look at his record. He knows the players better than anybody and probably knows David Beckham better than Beckham knows himself.''
