Rick Parry remains confident Michael Owen will end months of speculation by signing a new contract at Anfield.
Owen's current deal expires at the end of next season and Parry is hoping the Reds' star striker will be sufficiently impressed by the appointment of a new manager to commit his future to Liverpool.

Owen has hinted he may wait until after this summer's European Championships before making a final decision, but the Reds' chief executive insists he is confident the country's top striker will stay on Merseyside.

Parry said: "I think he will re-sign and I'm very hopeful he'll be with us next season. I think he wants to stay and I am comfortable that after a difficult week we are going in the right direction.

"Top players like Michael and Steven Gerrard want more than anything to be winning trophies. If Liverpool are trophyless we are less appealing to them."

Benitez close to Kop job
By PHIL THOMAS

RAFAEL BENITEZ seems certain to pave the way for his move to Liverpool by rejecting a new contract offer in Spain.

Valencia are so determined to keep the manager who has just led them to La Liga and UEFA Cup glory that a two-year extension is on the table.

That would take him up to 2007 and make him the longest-serving manager in their history with six years. But Benitez, 44, who earns £1million a year, knows he can double his money at Anfield.

And, more importantly, the man with whom he has had several run-ins is set to carry on as football director next season.

Jesus Garcia Pitarch has clashed with Benitez as the manager feels he should have a bigger say in transfer dealings.

Yet Pitarch has admitted he plans to stay on and Benitez, who has had to work on a limited budget, knows he is likely to be frustrated again next season.

Valencia shareholders meet next weekend and Benitez has promised he will have a decision on his future by then.

Benitez is also likely to take No2 Francisco Ayesteran with him to Anfield, which spells trouble for axed Gerard Houllier's assistant Phil Thompson.

Ayesteran worked with Benitez at Tenerife before they both left for Valencia three years ago.

Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry said: "Things will be sorted out middle to late June. It's important to get it right and all being well we'll have something exciting to say."

Reasons To Thank Ged
By Sarah Winterburn

He's gone but he won't be forgotten in a hurry. Even though he was a bit rubbish at his job, you just couldn't quite help liking him - and he certainly sold us some t-shirts, made Mediawatch easier and more...

1) For the lovely red scarf - a commemorative replica is available for sale in the Football365 shop. We sold eight - so thanks for that, Ged.

2) For some of the best boastage in the business - "I have a team that, when they want something, they get it. We can be awesome, we can be unbreakable, we can be unstoppable", "You can't say my team aren't winners. They've proved that by finishing fourth, third and second in the last three years", "This team have already written history but they are destined for greatness and will achieve much higher performances." And then just last month it was: "I believe the team will grow and at some stage we will win the title." Erm...

3) And on Saturday: "I am 100% certain I will be at Liverpool next season." It sounded pretty unequivocal, but everyone knows that the scale goes up to 110% in football.

4) For turning (at the last count) 427 corners.

5) For helping mould Stevie Gerrard into a future England captain - whatever else went wrong at Liverpool for Houllier, he can point to Stevie G and say: "That's my boy."

6) For inspiring the phrase 'Plastic Treble'.

7) For one of the most heart-warming tingle-down-the-spine moments of the season when Stevie G leapt into his arms after scoring against Levski Sofia, so you actually believed Houllier when he said: "If you want Steven Gerrard, you'd have to break both my arms because they're wrapped around him."

8) For being the inspiration behind one of the finest football headlines ever when he bought both Chris Kirkland and Jerzy Dudek on the same day despite having Sander Westerveld as his number one keeper. The headline? 'Bizarre Glove Triangle'.

9) For some diamonds in a big steaming pile of dung. Bringing Gary McAllister in for a final hurrah was inspired, while partnering Stephane Henchoz and Sami Hyypia was priceless. Getting Harry Kewell for just £5m will look a much, much better deal under a different manager.

10) For giving us the likes of Djimi Traore, Bernard Diomede, Salif Diao etc to fill every Flop, ever Waste Of Money and every Just Plain Awful XI written in the last five years.

11) For getting rid of Roy Evans.

12) For taking the time and effort to back up his conspiracy theories, explaining: "It always seems to be Liverpool under fire because of course so many former Liverpool players are employed by TV and radio. There are 22 currently working in the media as pundits - that’s a whole squad." And that's just brilliant, Ged.

13) For repeatedly beating the supposedly unbeatable Man United at Old Trafford - giving him the best record of just about any manager there but Sir Alex himself.

14) For still being alive. For that we can be truly thankful.

Cisse confirmed!!!

Liverpool legend Ian Rush believes the absence of French striker Djibril Cisse from Euro 2004 will be a blessing in disguise for the Reds when he arrives at Anfield on 1st July.
Cisse was not included in the France squad for Euro 2004 because he is serving a suspension after being sent-off playing for the Under-21 team.

Anfield coach Rush believes the rest will do Cisse a lot of good and says he will be sharp and ready to go pre-season.

Rush said: "Liverpool supporters will be disappointed they're not going to get a glimpse of Djibril Cisse in Euro 2004. I'm quite happy he won't be playing.

"I feel sorry for Cisse because it would be a great experience for him to play in a major tournament. But, by the time pre-season comes along, he will be desperate to get going.

"I didn't play in a World Cup or European Championship for Wales so I know what it's like to have a rest over the summer. It usually drives you mad to go two weeks without a match, so by the time six weeks have passed you will do anything to kick a ball. Cisse will feel that way in July and Liverpool will reap the benefits.

"Apart from that, could you imagine what would have happened if Cisse had scored a bagful in Portugal? Chelsea would probably have offered £28m for him and tried to hijack the deal before he arrived on July 1!"

Houllier tipped to become new France manager

Newspaper reports today claim that former Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier is to become the new manager of France now that Jacques Santini is set to take over at Tottenham.

It is claimed that the French Football Federation have short-listed Houllier and that he is the preferred choice of the influential Michel Platini. We know that the duo met for a 1-2-1 last week but have no idea if anything should be read into that - that's if anyone is actually interested anyway.

Gerrard's words in full from press conference

Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard today had the balls to admit that he was considering leaving the club for a new challenge.

A "serious change of heart" - which roughly translates into his family and friends urging him to think what he'd be turning his back on - means that he will for some time yet, remain a Liverpool player.

Speaking this afernoon, Gerrard said: "The last three of four weeks have been really confusing for me. "I have been involved in a big tournament and that's the reason I have been really quiet about my future.

"I have not really been happy with the progress the club has made the last two years as I have often told the media. For the first time in my career I thought about the possibility of leaving Liverpool for another club. But after Euro 2004 and sitting down with my family, having a fourth meeting with Rick and spending time with my agent, I am staying on at Liverpool.

"I am 100% committed to the club. I've gone with a decision that's been in my heart. I love the club, I love the supporters and that's what it boiled down to at the end of the day."

Ballack reveals Liverpool talks

German international Michael Ballack is refusing to rule out a possible move to Liverpool despite his agent claiming that the midfielder was only interested in a move to Spanish giants Barcelona.

Bayern Munich are open to offers for the 27-year-old but some of the figures quoted would be out of our league unless we can get them down to to around £8million. Bayern are keen on signing Didi Hamann so they may try to take him the other way in some kind of player exchange deal.

Speaking in German newspaper Bild, Ballack said: "I want to take a break following our departure from the European Championships. My agent is talking to Barcelona, Liverpool and others. We may say something this week but first I must rest."

His agent Michael Becker recently said the player was only keen on a move to Spain. He said: "Michael still hopes to go to Barcelona".

Liverpool have been linked with the player for some time now so it will be interesting to see if this one materialises.

Milan Baros akan ke Real Madrid !! .. :(

MADRID, July 6 (Reuters) - Real Madrid presidential candidate Lorenzo Sanz said on Tuesday that he had reached agreements to sign Czech Republic internationals Milan Baros and Tomas Rosicky as well as Portugal midfielder Maniche.

'We were at the final of Euro 2004 and made important agreements with three players while we were there,' Sanz told a news conference at his election headquarters.

'If we win the election, Maniche and Baros will be at the disposal of Real Madrid coach Jose Antonio Camacho from next Monday. Rosicky will be available to sign for the club in a year's time.'

When pressed on the exact terms of the agreements Sanz said that with regard to Porto midfielder Maniche he had approved the deal with both the player and his club.

However he said he had not yet spoken to the clubs of Liverpool forward Baros and Borussia Dortmund playmaker Rosicky.

Baros was one of the outstanding players at Euro 2004, scoring five goals as he helped the Czech Republic into the semi-finals of the tournament.

Maniche also had an excellent tournament, scoring a spectacular long distance curler in his side's 2-1 win over the Netherlands in the semi-finals.

Agreements such as those announced by Sanz have become regular features of presidential elections at Spanish clubs.

His defeat in the 2000 election was in large part due to Florentino Perez's promise to pay the $56 million needed to buy Portugal midfielder Luis Figo out of his contract from arch-rivals Barcelona.

Last year Joan Laporta won the Barcelona presidential election partly on the basis of a promise to sign England captain David Beckham after reaching an agreement with his then club Manchester United.

Laporta failed to live up to his pledge, though, as Beckham refused to agree to the move and instead joined Real Madrid.

Sanz is standing against Perez and businessman Arturo Baldasano in the election.

Diouf vows to fight for Anfield future
Senegal striker El Hadji Diouf has vowed to fight for his place at Liverpool.

Diouf has struggled to adapt to the Premiership in the last two seasons following his arrival from Lens.

With Djbril Cisse now on board, in addition to Michael Owen and Milan Baros, Diouf would appear to be right down the pecking order.

But he is determined to impress new coach Rafael Benitez. 'I have a contract with Liverpool and my objective is to stay here,' Diouf told the club's official website.

'I left France to succeed in the Premiership and I have not yet done that.

'I can speak very well of the new coach, Benitez, and I want to demonstrate to him that I can serve a purpose for his new project.'

Diouf added: 'There are teams that are interested in me but Liverpool have said nothing to me about it.

'I would only leave England to play in a league like Spain's which, perhaps next to England, is the best in the world.'

CHAMPIONS WORLD: Cisse debuts with a pair in Liverpool romp

http://www.sportinglife.com/pictures/general/allsportcisseceltic.jpg

French newcomer Djibril Cisse enjoyed a dream debut with Liverpool on Monday, scoring two second-half goals and nearly getting a third as the Reds routed Celtic, 5-1, in the ChampionsWorld series at Hartford, Conn.

John Arne Riise scored an early goal and fed Michael Owen with a long ball for another as Liverpool handed the Scottish champions their second ChampionsWorld series loss in three days.

Swiss defender Stephane Henchoz also tallied for the Liverpool at Rentschler Field.

Craig Beattie, who scored twice in Celtic's 4-2 loss to Chelsea in Seattle on Saturday, converted a 72nd-minute penalty kick after he was fouled in the area by Senegalese defender Salif Diao.

Riise rifled home from a free kick in the fifth minute, and Owen lobbed Celtic goalkeeper David Marshall in the 17th as Liverpool took charge early.in the third game of the 11-match ChampionsWorld series.

Cisse, a halftime substitute, tapped home a return pass from Danny Murphy in the 62nd minute after hitting the left post 70 seconds into the second half.

Henchoz made it 4-0 with a high-bouncing rebound following a free kick six minutes later, and Cisse -- acquired from Auxerre -- combined with Murphy again for the fifth goal in the 76th.

Liverpool goalkeeper Chris Kirkland made a sprawling save on Stilian Petrov eight minutes into the second half, and he got a hand to Beattie's penalty kick but couldn't push it past the left post.

Celtic takes on another English power -- Manchester United -- Wednesday in Philadelphia, then closes its North American tour against AS Roma on Saturday in Toronto.

Liverpool on Friday plays European champion FC Porto in Toronto, then meets AS Roma on Aug. 3 in East Rutherford, N.J.

RAFA DEDICATES WIN TO FANS

http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/images4/140704-rafa_120_01.jpg

Rafael Benitez said he was very happy with Liverpool's 5-1 hammering of Celtic in the first game of the Reds USA tour and dedicated the performance to the Reds fans in the stadium.
Benitez said he liked very much the style of play from his side and the way players tried to express themselves throughout the game.

Benitez said: "That was a good match for the people to watch with two teams always attacking and trying to win the match. We played well, scored lots of goals and everyone is really happy. I am happy and that's for the supporters.

"I thought we played some good football but we need to keep more of the ball sometimes. We are training hard and to score five goals against Celtic is very good.

"I am pleased for Djibril Cisse to score his first goals for Liverpool and he could have scored four. We have four quality strikers who score goals and Stephane Henchoz! He was really happy to score.

"For me the four forwards Michael Owen, Milan Baros, Djibril Cisse and Florent Sinama-Pongolle all did really well. We have a lot of possibilities and all the players can play well with each other and have an understanding."

The Reds boss also said he was delighted with the way his players were responding to his tactics and his views on the game.

Benitez said: "Always when a new manager comes in he will have different ideas and if the players understand me and how I want us to play then it will be better for everybody.

"I have an idea how I want to play football and the players are understanding little by little what I want from them. The important thing is to have more than one possibility in your play. At Valencia I played one striker because I had Aimar but at Liverpool we have four quality strikers who can give us possibilities."

RAFA'S REDS REBORN IN THE USA

Liverpool kicked off their tour of the United States and Canada by thrashing Celtic 5-1 in the Rentschler Field Stadium in East Hartford, Connecticut.

Djibril Cisse (2) and Stephane Henchoz both scored their first goals for Liverpool to wrap up the game in the second-half after John Arne Riise and Michael Owen had powered the Reds into a 2-nil lead after just 16 minutes of the first-half. Celtic scored a late consolation goal from the spot after 73 minutes when Craig Beattie picked himself up from a foul by Salif Diao to put his penalty beyond Chris Kirkland but Cisse's second after 76 minutes restored the four-goal cushion.

Celtic's USA tour opened with a 4-2 defeat to Chelsea at the weekend in Seattle and they could have been behind tonight within the first minute as Rafael Benitez's side started the match in blistering form.

After great work from Michael Owen - starting his first game for Liverpool since Euro 2004 alongside Milan Baros in attack - Harry Kewell was unlucky not to open the scoring when he saw his close-range shot somehow blocked inside the area.

The Liverpool fans inside the Rentschler Field Stadium didn't have too long to wait for the opening goal however and when it arrived after four minutes, it was rather special. Igor Biscan, brilliant in midfield, helped win a free-kick and from all of 35 yards, Riise unleashed a rocket that was never going to be stopped. If you thought Riise's free-kick against Fabien Barthez at Anfield was good, you're going to love watching this one.

Liverpool continued to attack with style and pace and when the team switched to a more direct style after 16 minutes, the lead was doubled. When the ball was played through the middle, Owen controlled the ball expertly and then chipped David Marshall in the Celtic goal.

Benitez started the match with four players who travelled to Portugal in Dietmar Hamann, Vladimir Smicer, Owen and Baros but it was the revitalised Igor Biscan who caught the eye most often with a stunning performance in the centre of midfield. The new Liverpool manager has only had good things to say about the Croat since taking charge at Anfield and the midfielder who struggled to win the confidence of the fans last season looks like a totally different player this term.

Benitez, as expected, shuffled his pack at half-time with Steven Gerrard, Danny Murphy, Salif Diao, Stephane Henchoz, Djibril Cisse and Florent Sinama-Pongolle replacing Biscan, Smicer, Hamann, Sami Hyypia, Owen and Baros respectively.

Cisse, the club's record signing, made an immediate impact after just one minute on the pitch when he found space in the Celtic area to unleash a shot which cruelly rebounded back off the post with the goalkeeper beaten.

His first goal came after 62 minutes though and after Stephane Henchoz had sent a right-footed volley into the back of the net, Cisse scored his second of the night after great work from Danny Murphy.

Celtic did score a late consolation goal from the spot after a foul in the area by Salif Diao but it was never going to be enough to take the shine off tonight's electrifying performance.

REDS CONFIRM NEW SPANISH SIGNING

http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/images3/280704-josemi_379_04.jpg

Liverpool today confirmed the signing of defender Josemi from Malaga. The club have been in talks with the highly-rated star all week and after completing his medical, he officially became a Liverpool player today.

Josemi, real name Jose Miguel Gonzales Rey, began his career at Torremolinos and can play right-back or centre-back, and becomes the first signing for Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez. The defender has been tipped for a call-up to the full Spain squad next month.

Liverpool Football Club Head of Press Ian Cotton confirmed: "We are delighted to have signed Josemi. The player is flying out with us as we speak to the USA and will join the squad in America and Toronto.

"At the moment he can't play due to not having international clearance. However we have requested and awaiting international clearance for the player to be involved in the remaining two matches in Toronto and New Jersey. He will be training with the squad."

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez said: "I know this player and he is good in defence. He's good in the air and can make this team stronger.

"For me it is important that we have good players and it does not matter what nationality they are. Perhaps I know the Spanish market better than others but we have good scouts all around the world so if good players become available then we will sign them."

Josemi told the press earlier this week that he was delighted to be linked with a move to Anfield and even before the deal was completed, he said: "I am really happy because this is an unbeatable opportunity. If I was ever going to leave Malaga, it was for something like this.

"I was speaking to Benitez, he has put his faith in me and I will work to make sure things turn out well. It was an offer I couldn't refuse. Now everybody has to be happy, because it's a proud moment for everybody connected with me.

"I wasn't expecting the move, but this has all happened in two days and everything has worked out in an instant. For me, it's what I've always dreamed about and now I have the chance to play in a big team, I have to take advantage of it. I still haven't taken it in and when I get there I will try to adapt bit by bit. I have to adapt well and be patient."

SCOUSE HEART VITAL TO RAFA

Rafael Benitez has revealed that he intends to keep a strong Scouse heart to his new-look Liverpool team but claims that the will to win is more important that the place of your birth.

"It's always important to have a core of local players in my team," Benitez said. "But not just local players, players with the right mentality and professionalism. They have to be able to play to a certain level, of course. I want players who only want to win. If you have players who are not ready to fight for the team they are no use.

"I think I have players here who are willing to do this. Players like Gerrard, Murphy and Carragher feel Liverpool. That's a beginning for me. The spirit of Shankly is important here and it's important to them."

- Apsal Rafa tak sebut Owen yek? Mungkin ke Barca atau Real datang jemput dia sebelom EPL start. :|)

However, the new boss was quick to warn fans not to get too carried away with the 5-1 thrashing of Celtic on Tuesday morning. "You always need to keep everyone calm, even if you've won a game 5-1. If you say now the team is wonderful and we are the best, the supporters will expect us to win all the matches. Little by little, game by game, I'm feeling happier. But we must still recognise those things we've done badly and correct them. When the river is flowing downwards, then you must swim against the tide. When it's flowing upwards, you must paddle stronger in the opposite direction."

REDS REINVENT THE PASS AND MOVE GROOVE

http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/images3/270704-cisse_250_01.jpg

The Liverpool groove looks to be on the verge of making a long-awaited comeback and we're not talking about that dreadful cup final record of 1996.

Rafael Benitez has only been in charge of the Reds for two games but the early signs are that the famous pass and move tactics, upon which an Anfield dynasty was built, are in the process of being reincarnated.

Those who witnessed a rampant Liverpool tear Celtic apart with a scintillating performance of free-flowing football could be forgiven for thinking they were watching a different team to that which has wore the red shirt in recent seasons.

Fluent passing football, intelligent movement off the ball and a hunger to carry on attacking are such terms have not been associated with the Reds for sometime now but every one was in evidence on a memorable night in Connecticut.

The Rentchler Field Stadium had never before staged a soccer match but if they decide to host another, Liverpool have done their prospects of being invited back no harm at all.

It's well documented how our version of football struggles to compete for spectators with other US sports and the hope is that the Champions World series will help boost its popularity.

More games like this will surely do the trick and for that there is only one team to thank. Celtic may be at a more advanced stage of the pre-season programme than the Reds but you'd never have guessed.

From the first minute Liverpool were in control and once John Arne Riise burst the back of the net as early as the fifth minute there was only ever going to be one winner.

What no one expected though was the emphatic manner in which victory was achieved.

Riise's thunderbolt has been a long time coming. If you want to know how he scored this goal think of his never-to-be-forgotten piledriver against Fabien Barthez at Anfield in 2001 and you're on the right track.

The strike stemmed from a free-kick gained after the impressive Igor Biscan had been brought crashing to the ground as he attempted to waltz straight through the Celtic midfield as if no one was there.

A major strength of the new manager so far seems to be his ability to get the best out of his players and members of the squad who supporters will have previously deemed surplus to requirements suddenly look to have a new lease of life. One such player is the much-maligned Biscan

The Croat was handed a start in the centre of midfield for the second match running and he repaid his boss's faith in him by turning in another outstanding performance that suggests he could have a future at Anfield after all.

Calm and composed on the ball, Biscan seems to have been given an injection of confidence. He looks like he's enjoying his football once again, constantly wants the ball and his first thought now when he receives it is always to push forward.

It's no coincidence that he is being used in his natural position and that is another trait Benitez seems to favour. In the two games we've seen so far no player has been asked to fulfil an unfamiliar role and dividends of this have been clear to see.

Harry Kewell, for example, has obviously been instructed to stay out wide on the left and not drift from flank to flank. Suddenly he looks the exciting winger we thought we'd purchased from Leeds last summer, hugging the touchline and constantly striving to get to the by-line before delivering his crosses.

Michael Owen also looks revitalised. In what was his first game since Euro 2004 he was surprisingly sharp. When the players were introduced to the crowd before kick-off the loudest roar was predictably reserved for Owen and he didn't disappoint.

The goal he scored to make it 2-0 was an exquisitely taken effort. Riise turned provider to play him through and with just the keeper to beat he nonchalantly lobbed David Marshall from the edge of the box.

It was a touch of class you'd expect from a player of his standing and together with Milan Baros he proceeded to run the Celts defence ragged during the opening 45 minutes.

Attack is an area that Liverpool look exceptionally well off in. The Celtic fans must have breathed a huge sigh of relief when they discovered Milan and Michael were to be withdrawn at the interval but then they were confronted with another fearsome double act - Cisse and Pongolle.

The French pair have struck up an instant friendship off the pitch and they form a lethal looking combination off it. Cisse plays as the main striker with little Flo just behind and they sparked instantly. Within minutes of them coming they combined with good effect and our club record signing unluckily struck the base of the upright.

It was an ominous warning to the opposition and one they didn't heed. Soon afterwards the woodwork couldn't prevent Cisse from opening his goalscoring account in a red shirt. It may only have been a simple close-range tap-in, after an inviting ball across the face of goal by Murphy, but you get the impression it will be the first of many.

The £14 million man is already on the way to becoming a big favourite of the fans and if his second goal of the night is anything to go by he has the potential to take the Premiership by storm in the coming campaign.

Again Murphy was the creator, opening up the Celtic defence with a perfectly threaded through ball that Cisse raced onto. There was still a lot to do but the way in which he skilfully sidestepped a defender before coolly sliding the ball under Marshall was a joy to watch.

By this stage Liverpool were threatening to run riot. In between Cisse's double strike came a very rare moment as Stephane Henchoz netted his first ever goal for the Reds. It says much about the Reds' new enterprising style of play that the Swiss defender was even up in the box for a corner and he seized the opportunity by converting a half-volley that bounced up off the ground before hitting the net.

Whether we witness more of the same from Stephane in future games remains to be seen but no longer can he be spoken about in the same sentence as Rob Jones.

Craig Beattie's consolation penalty, after Salif Diao had needlessly brought down the youngster in the penalty area, was a just a minor hiccup and it was heartening to see, that even at 5-1 up, Liverpool refused to sit back and take their foot off the pedal. With their new boss urging them on from the touchline the Reds continued to press for more goals and if they had hit double figures Celtic could have had no complaints.

It's easy to get carried away by an emphatic 5-1 victory. And, course, it is only pre-season after all, but this win was not achieved against a bunch of part-time Scandinavian no-hopers. Scottish champions Celtic are no mugs. They were far from at their best here but don't allow that to take away from a superb Liverpool performance.

Rafael Benitez said in his pre-match press conference that he wants his team to win every game and he's obviously already instilled this mentality into his players.

A typical half-hearted pre-season stroll, this most certainly was not. It was edge of the seat football that Liverpudlians thrive on.

Keep it up and roll on the new season!

smicer k.o. ka?

Vladimir Smicer fears he will never play football again after undergoing knee surgery in America.
The Liverpool midfielder is definitely out for six months after aggravating a long standing problem during the Reds' tour of the States, but he has revealed there is a chance the operation carried out by Dr Richard Steadman in Colorado may not be a success.

Smicer has also admitted the injury couldn't have come at a worse time with a new manager in place at Anfield and his current contract set to expire at the end of the season.

"It could not have been worse timing for me," he said. "A new manager and the last season of my contract and I get an injury that puts me out for six months. It could not have been worse.

"You do worry about it. You want to play and at this age you wonder if you will play again.

"The specialist said to me there's a 75 per cent chance of the operation being a success but that means there's a 25 per cent chance it might not work. That is a big worry.

"The operation did go well and that is a good thing. The specialist said it really couldn't have gone any better. But while there is that slight chance you will always have doubts.

"I am going to be on crutches for two months and they have given me a machine that I've to be on for eight hours a day. Hopefully it will all work for me."

Rafa's reject

REAL MADRID have claimed that Liverpool offered to sell them Michael Owen.

New Kop boss Rafa Benitez believes he can manage without the £25million-rated England hitman.

And Anfield chiefs, worried that Owen could leave for nothing when his contract runs out next summer, alerted Real president Florentino Perez that they were ready to sell.

A Real insider revealed: “It was Liverpool that made the first move and contacted Madrid saying that Owen was available and invited an offer.

“It was a surprise — but it is no surprise that Florentino was immediately interested in Liverpool’s offer.

“Of course Florentino Perez is delighted to be given the chance to sign such a great player.”

Liverpool want £25m for the England man, who was left out of Liverpool’s 2-0 Champions League qualifier victory against AK Graz in Austria on Tuesday.

But Real Madrid believe they can get him for less because the Merseysiders have made all the running.

The Spanish giants are ready to go up to £20m after banking £9m yesterday from the sale of Samuel Eto’o.

The Cameroon star joined Barcelona in a £18m deal from Real Mallorca — but Madrid had a 50 per cent sell-on arrangement.

Benitez originally wanted Eto’o to be part of the Owen deal — but the African made it clear he was not interested in a move to England.

Now Benitez must decide if he is prepared to take Real’s Fernando Morientes as a makeweight in the deal, with up to £10m cash as well for the England forward.

Otherwise, the former Valencia coach may raid his old club for Argentine midfielder Pablo Aimar and striker Mista.

Real chief Perez will now go into overdrive to complete his transfer dealings over the coming days as he aims to take Owen and Arsenal’s £30m-rated midfielder Patrick Vieira to the Bernabeu.

Vieira has been given until the Premiership kick-off on Saturday to come clean to his Highbury chiefs about whether he intends to join Real or not.

I have to go

Apsal lak ko tiba² nak menyalak ni. Ko yang carik pasal dengan club. Taataa Owen.

MICHAEL OWEN claims that he is being forced out of Liverpool.

And his boss Rafael Benitez has confirmed he WILL join Real Madrid.

The England striker has confided in a close friend, who said: “Michael feels let down the way he has been treated over his new deal.

“He did not instigate the interest from Real Madrid and has the impression Liverpool are trying to force him out.

“Even if the Madrid move falls through, he feels it will be almost impossible for him to stay at Anfield.

“It would require Liverpool to do a complete U-turn and try to convince him to stay for the situation to change.”

Real and Liverpool were last night poised to agree an £8million fee with a makeweight player thrown in — thought to be teenage whizkid Juanfran.

New Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez was hoping for £10m PLUS either Fernando Morientes or Samuel Eto’o.

But Morientes ruled himself out of playing for another club in Europe this season by scoring two goals for Real in their Champions League qualifier in Poland on Wednesday.

And Eto’o is now joining Barcelona in an £18m transfer.

The Owen affair is becoming a potential embarrassment to the Merseysiders.

BENITEZ ... deal

And Owen’s friend, a close and trusted pal for many years, added: “In Michael’s mind, the damage has already been done.

“He is upset about it, as this proposed transfer has not been driven by him.”

Owen, left on the bench for Tuesday’s clash with AK Graz to keep him free for Euro action with a rival club, was ordered to train with the reserves on Wednesday when the squad returned from Austria.

Milan Baros and Djibril Cisse look certain to start tomorrow’s Premiership opener at Tottenham.

Kop legend Ian Rush is one who hopes it is still not too late to retrieve the situation.

He said: “Every club in the world would be interested in Michael. But I know he loves Liverpool and hope he stays.

“You cannot ask for a better strike force than Michael, Milan and Djibril.

“You would not expect the three of them to play together every week. Yet there are a lot of games ahead and you cannot have too many good players.

“When I left Liverpool for Juventus, the circumstances were different.

“Wales had failed to qualify for the World Cup and I wanted to test myself against the best.

“Now the Premiership is the best league in the world and all the top players want to come here.”

Despite Rush’s hope, the transfer moved closer to completion as Real president Florentino Perez and marketing director Jose Angel Sanchez met Owen’s representatives in the Spanish capital.

A Real insider said: “The meeting was arranged to discuss Michael Owen and now it is up to Liverpool.

“Real have made their offer and Perez told Liverpool to make up their minds about Owen. If that happens, he could be here in 24 hours.”

Benitez will not block 24-year-old Owen’s sale, with new £14m signing Cisse and Baros making a bigger impression in pre-season.

Owen’s move should go through in the next couple of days, though any last-minute hold-ups could delay his Bernabeu unveiling until early next week.

Owen will light up Bernabeu

MICHAEL OWEN’S future hangs in the balance

Liverpool want him to stay but the Bernabeu beckons and when Real Madrid come knocking they tend to get their man.

Many star players have left these shores and failed. The jury is still out on whether David Beckham can be a wonder in white.

But whether Owen stays or goes, one man knows a club is going to benefit big time.

England and Newcastle legend Alan Shearer has no doubts about his former England strike partner and is convinced Owen, 24, will be a hit wherever he plays.

Shearer said: “It is not clear where Michael will be. But whoever has his services will have a striker coming into the prime of his footballing life.

“Moving to Real Madrid or any other top foreign club would be a big opportunity for him.

“At Madrid, for example, he would also be joining up with David Beckham and they certainly know each other’s game from England duty.

“Nobody can fault his service to Liverpool. He has given his all for seven years. But he has been playing in a side which, bar one season, has been outside the top three for I don’t know how many years and maybe that has come into his thinking.

“Yet these are also exciting times at Anfield with a new manager, so it is going to be a tough decision all round.”

Shearer insists no one should have any concerns about whether Owen is still at the top of his trade.

http://images.thesun.co.uk/picture/0,,2004370966,00.jpg
OLD DAYS ... Owen and Shearer

He said: “You just need to look at Michael’s goals record. It stands up to scrutiny at any level.

“And to think at 24 he is still very young and coming towards what should be his very best years.”

It takes a special kind of player to be able to move to a different country and make a success out of it. If the chance presents itself, Shearer believes Owen is one who will do just that.

Shearer said: “Michael has the right character to cope with any big move and turn it into a success.

“He is a very determined character and also a very experienced footballer despite still being very young. I’ve never had any doubts about his character since the first time I played with him.

“He has an arrogance, in a positive way, that can set him aside from others on the pitch.

“He is not frightened to miss a chance because he knows he is going to get another one and then he will come up with the goods.” While Owen stands on the brink of a new start, Shearer enters the final season of his playing career.

The run up to it has been fraught with problems with stories of bust-ups and a breakdown in the relationship between himself and Bobby Robson.

Shearer had a meeting this week with the boss and is adamant there are no problems.

In fact, the pair are United in their desire to win silverware in what will be the final season for both men at the club they love.

Shearer said: “There is no rift just a burning desire to win a trophy in our final year.

Assalamualaikum ..

akhirnya Owen meninggalkan Liverpool juga, iskh ..
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Owen passes Real medical
England striker Michael Owen will be unveiled as a Real Madrid player tomorrow after passing a medical tonight.

Owen is joining the Spanish giants in an #8million plus player-exchange deal after Liverpool agreed to sell the 24-year-old earlier today.

Owen had just one season remaining on his contract at Anfield but after talks over a new deal stalled, new manager Rafael Benitez today revealed he would be leaving.

Real issued a statement on their website, www.realmadrid.com, this evening with a photograph of the erstwhile Liverpool forward giving the thumbs up.

The statement read: 'Owen will be presented tomorrow (Saturday) at 1300 hours at the Santiago Bernabeu.

'The forward landed at 1750 at the Torrejon de Ardoz airport and then was taken to the Zarzuela Clinic to have the necessary medical exam.

'The Englishman arrived at the aforementioned clinic with his personal assistant and Javier Garcia Coll.

'Doctors Alfonso Del Corral and Juan Carlos Hernandez were in charge of the exams and also a cardiological study and radiological tests.

'The doctors gave the go-ahead and the striker can from now on wear the white shirt.'

Rumours that Owen was to leave Anfield intensified earlier this week, just days after the player claimed he was 'closer than ever' to signing a new Liverpool deal.

He was then left on the bench for the Reds' Champions League qualifier against Graz AK in Austria on Tuesday, a move which prevented him from becoming cup-tied.

Midfielder Antonio Nunez is expected to move in the opposite direction as part of the deal.

Benitez now hopes to use some of the Owen money to pursue his interest in Real Sociedad's Xabi Alonso. Barcelona's right-sided midfielder Luis Garcia has also been mentioned as a possible target.

Benitez said: 'I would hope to use the money from Michael's deal to bring those players in quickly. But I must explain we were very, very happy with Michael. He trains well and is a fantastic player.

'For us we know he must go because his contract finishes in a year. But that was not the problem, we had waited one year and two months for a new contract. And we knew that Real Madrid knew that.

'It was impossible to control the situation. For us it was bad but at the end it was impossible. He will sign a contract with a good team in Real Madrid and we need to use this money to balance the team.

'We were very happy with Michael, we wanted Michael here a lot of years but a long time had gone by without signing a new contract. Last year Real Madrid tried to sign the player and now they have done.'

Owen's departure ends a long association with the club that saw him come through the club's youth ranks.

A prodigious talent, Owen was given his first team chance by former manager Roy Evans at the tail end of the 1996-97 season and promptly scored on his debut against Wimbledon.

He quickly established himself as a first-team regular and went on to score 118 goals in 216 appearances for the club.
