Fergie rules out van der Vaart swoop

SIR Alex Ferguson has ruled out a move for Dutch forward Rafael Van der Vaart.

Van der Vaart has been linked with a move away from Ajax and speculation has been rife that United could join Barcelona in the race to snap up the highly-rated youngster.

However, Ferguson, who has already signed Alan Smith and Gabriel Heinz in the close season and is keen to snap up at least one more new recruit, insists that the player is not on his wish-list.

"Absolutely nothing is happening (with regard to signing van der Vaart)," he said.

"You can run the story if you like. I would be delighted if you did because it would keep the scent off."

MANCHESTER United are stepping up their interest in Norwegian left winger Morten Gamst Pedersen and are expected to have a spy at Tromso's cup match with Lillestrom tonight.

Blackburn Rovers have already had a bid for the highly-rated 22-year-old rejected by Tromso and turned their attentions instead to last week's capture of Javier De Pedro from Real Sociedad.

United's own efforts last January to secure cover and competition for Ryan Giggs in that role were wrecked when PSV Eindhoven's Arjen Robben chose Chelsea instead.

But Pedersen could be a cheaper option for manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Glazer raises the United stakes

MANCHESTER United have found themselves inching nearer a possible takeover after US sports tycoon Malcolm Glazer today invested a further £6m in the Reds.

Glazer, who owns American football outfit Tampa Bay Buccaneers, has bought a further 2.41m shares in the club.

It raises the stake of United's second-biggest shareholder to 50.27m shares, an increase of 0.9 per cent.

Glazer has steadily increased his holding in the Reds over the past year and at one stage looked to be in a battle with largest shareholders John Magnier and JP McManus to be the first to launch a takeover.

But since the speculation reached its height in February, Magnier's Cubic Expression and Glazer's Family Partnership have both gone quiet.

ALEX FERGUSON is set to accept a £30million Real Madrid bid for Ruud van Nistelrooy - so he can land Wayne Rooney.

SunSport exclusively revealed on Saturday that Manchester United were preparing a £22m raid for wonderkid Rooney.

But Everton have already told them that will not be enough.

United's board will not go to £30m unless boss Fergie sells.

Hitman Van Nistelrooy is the man who can bring in mega-money - and is ready to go.

There has been frantic activity between Real, Van Nistelrooy's agent and United during Euro 2004. Fergie knows an offer is imminent and a big decision has to be made.

Dutchman Van Nistelrooy does not want to get involved in any talks until Holland are out of Euro 2004.

They are now in the semi-finals after winning a penalty shootout thriller against Sweden.

Ideally, Old Trafford boss Ferguson would not want to let Van Nistelrooy go.

But he is desperate to get Rooney - a player he likens to former United idol Eric Cantona for his ability on the ball.

Van Nistelrooy is 28 on July 1. And if United get £30m for him it will be seen as good business when they then get 18-year-old Rooney in his place.

Reds won't sell Ruud to land Rooney

MANCHESTER United are holding most of the aces in the chase for England star Wayne Rooney but will resist cashing in on Ruud van Nistelrooy to land the star.

Chelsea still have the major card up their sleeve in the form of an unlimited supply of Roman Abramovich's cash to soften the blow for reluctant sellers Everton.

But United today told M.E.N. Sport that selling Ruud van Nistelrooy to rake in cash to fund the purchase of the £50m 18-year-old hitman is out of the question.

The club said that stories claiming the Dutchman would be sacrificed in a £30m deal to Real Madrid were "absolute rubbish."

Funding a swoop for Rooney is likely to be United's big stumbling block.

The Reds know that as things stand Old Trafford is 18-year-old Rooney's first choice destination.

Minefields

The home-loving Liverpudlian isn't keen on uprooting as a teenager to the capital and all the potential minefields London would lay.

Remaining in the North West with his family would suit the Euro 2004 hit.

United also have their former temporary number two Walter Smith batting on their behalf.

The former Everton boss, who helped out Sir Alex Ferguson in the last two months of the season, was a key figure in Rooney's early development at Goodison.

He left the club before Rooney made the first team but his handling of his progress earned him great respect from the striker and his family, and he will have informed them that Old Trafford is the place to be.

While it is understood that there is foreign interest in Rooney, the fight comes down to a straight one between United and Chelsea.

Price tag

Everton's chairman Bill Kenwright has stuck that £50m price tag on his head and it is that kind of world record transfer fee that favours Chelsea.

United just do not have the readies in the kitty to make a swift plunge for the four-goal England success story, who is currently recovering from the broken foot he suffered in Portugal.

United are currently appraising a stadium development project and the board are expected to approve the work and then put in planning permission to fill in two corners of Old Trafford to take the capacity up to 75,000.

They will have to commit £40m cash over two years to the work which would leave little available surplus money in the bank to put up for Rooney.

United would consider breaking their own transfer record of £30m for Rio Ferdinand in 2001 to land the Evertonian but Fergie would certainly have to sell off some of his squad to help finance a deal for Rooney.

Everton are only thought to have designs on midfielder Nicky Butt but that would only raise around £6m of the fee.

Everton want to start new contract talks with their jewel but it is believed they know they are facing a virtually impossible task to keep him at Goodison.

The striker currently earns £13,000 a year at the club but his Goodison wages are said to be dwarfed by his sponsorship income.

Successful

Significantly Rooney has a 10-year £5m boot and clothing deal with giants Nike who are United's biggest sponsors.

The Reds struck a massive 13-year deal with the global brand and are enjoying a successful relationship with the company helped further by United's tour of the USA last summer.

A Champions League profile for Rooney with the Reds would be a lucrative welcome link-up for the company.

Chelsea's bottomless pit of money remains the major negative as far as United are concerned and a further fly in the ointment could come if the London outfit land Steven Gerrard.

The Liverpool and England midfielder is a big mate of fellow scouser Rooney and if the elder of the two moves to Stamford Bridge it could ease the teenager's concerns about settling down in the south.

Nevilles are Reds for life

GARY and Phil Neville have become Reds for life after landing new five-year deals with Manchester United.

The brothers flew to Chicago today to join United on the eve of the team's opening American tour game against Bayern Munich with the deals signed, sealed and delivered.

The contracts, which have been negotiated with United's hierarchy by the Bury-born duo's father, Neville Neville, will keep them at Old Trafford until 2009 and into their 30s.

United's top brass and manager Sir Alex Ferguson are keen to keep the local backbone of the club intact and, having successfully secured the Nevilles, are turning their attention to Salford's Paul Scholes and Longsight-born Wes Brown.

The brothers have remained on similar wages approved when they signed their last contracts and will take home around £50,000-a-week.

The contracts will mean that Gary and Phil end their big-time careers with the club they've been attached to since their teens.

England right-back Gary signed as a trainee in 1991 and on completion of his new deal, which might not be his last, his United career will have spanned a phenomenal 18 years.

He has gone from Youth Cup winner with the Class of '92 to senior stalwart with six Premiership title medals, three FA Cups and a European Cup to his name.

Gary, 29, will now be tied to the Reds under contract until beyond his 34th birthday. It's a huge fillip for the defender, who finally gained nationwide approval as England's undisputed right-back with a successful Euro 2004 in Portugal.

For Phil, the five-year deal is a booster following a campaign that saw him establish himself as anchorman in the Reds engine room, elbowing out Nicky Butt.

However, the 27-year-old's season ended in slight disappointment when he failed to make Fergie's first choice XI for the FA Cup final against Millwall, and then he didn't start a game for England in Euro 2004.

Phil, who captained United's 1995 FA Youth Cup-winning team, signed as a trainee in 1993 and his new deal will extend his Old Trafford career to 15 years.

The pair have made almost 800 United first team appearances between them and have bagged 117 caps each for England and are closing in on Sir Bobby and Jack Charlton's record for brothers of a joint collection of 141 caps.
