(Al-A'raf:172-174)

For the same reason new Muslim converts are better referred to as reverts, since we were all Muslims during our covenant with Allah (SWT). Once we were born into this world, our parents determine our religion, as stated in these ahadith:
Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported:
Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: An infant is born according to his (true) nature (fitra). It is his parents who make him a Jew, a Christian or a Magian just as a she-camel gives birth to its young ones. Do you find any deficiency in their limbs?
[Bukhari, Muslim]

Al-Aswad ibn Sari reports: "I joined God's Messenger in four expeditions. Once, when our people had killed enemy fighters, they also attacked their children. On hearing this, the Prophet was very angry and rebuked them saying:
'How is it that some people attack children?' One man said: 'Messenger of God, are they not the children of unbelievers?' He said: 'The best among you have been born to unbelievers. Let it be known that every human being is born following the right faith. He will continue to do so until he is able to express himself. His parents then make of him a Jew or a Christian.'"

The hadith means that everyone has the innate potential to become a Muslim. Meaning peace, salvation and obedience, Islam is, first of all, the natural religion of all creatures. Since everything in nature has been created to render absolute obedience to God and functions according to His laws, all creatures are Muslims. Considered from the viewpoint of their bodily structure, every human being and jinn, regardless of their religion, is muslim, since all bodies operate according to the laws determined for them by God. If a new-born could lead a completely isolated life free of environmental effects, he or she would remain a natural Muslim.

This hadith has another meaning: A new-born's mind is like a blank tape on which everything can be recorded. If he or she could be protected from any external effect that would bring about some impurity in his or her brain, such a person easily could receive anything related to Islam and become a perfect Muslim. But if the mind is made impure with many adverse elements, or if non-Islamic dogmas and traditions are fed into it, the person will become a follower of those religions or face great difficulties while trying to become a good Muslim.

Every new-born is like a seed to grow a good Muslim, for everyone comes to the world as the seed of a future Muslim. Adverse conditions cause this seed to be deformed or spoiled and, consequently, to become a follower of another religion or, according to the surrounding conditions, of no religion at all. Therefore, improving one's family and environmental conditions is vitally important if we want to produce good Muslims. After a child has reached the age of puberty, sins are a primary factor in deforming the seed. For this reason, it is said that every sin has the potential to guide the sinner to unbelief. So, we must do our best to protect ourselves against sins. Family, education, and environment are also of great importance for this purpose.

Only recently, group of neuroscientists at the University of California at San Diego has identified a region of the human brain that appears to be linked to thoughts of spiritual matters and prayer. Their findings suggest that we as a species are genetically programmed to believe in God.

I remind myself and others to becareful what we feed our brain. Most of the prgrams, movies on TV are not bringing us closer to Allah in fact taking us away from the pleasure of Allah. Just look at the amount of sex and violence potrayed on TV, you'll know what I mean.

May Allah keep us to the right path.
