Moot issue

Is the English game losing its identity with the influx of foreign players and is the situation cause for concern? Perhaps not.

SHOULD Aston Villa overcome English champions Manchester United at home this weekend, chances are, they will be applauded from as far away as Switzerland.

FIFA President Sepp Blatter must by now have adopted Villa as his favourite Barclays Premier League club. They are, after all, an example of the way he would like to see all European clubs go in the near future.

When Martin O'Neill's side beat West Ham in the last round of matches, they did so with a starting XI featuring eight players who qualify for the English national team. They were: Scott Carson, Zat Knight, Craig Gardner, Nigel Reo-Coker, Gareth Barry, Gabriel Agbonlahor, Luke Moore and Ashley Young. Should there be an injury to either Martin Laursen or Olof Mellberg, O'Neill could call up another Englishman, Curtis Davies.

Blatter has recently courted controversy with his proposal that there should be a maximum of five overseas players in any team and the Swiss is prepared to take on the European Union, with its strict laws on employment and free movement of labour, because he thinks it is vital to “protect the national identity of the football clubs.”

Martin O'Neill, whose national team is Northern Ireland, may or may not agree with Blatter. He has explained his “buy British” transfer strategy by saying, “We're in the market for quality players. It doesn't matter to me where they come from. Seeing them picked for England is great for them and for the club, too. But the mentality I'm interested in is a winning one.”

His plan is therefore based on buying players who want to force their way into international football. They are given a great chance at Villa as England head coach Steve McClaren and his Under-21s counterpart Stuart Pearce are almost permanent fixtures at Villa games, given the players on show.

Pearce's team scored a fourth straight win this week in its 2009 European Championship Qualifying campaign. In preparing for this campaign, Pearce admitted he had hardly bothered attending matches featuring England's four Champions League representatives as only Arsenal's Theo Walcott features in Pearce's squad.

He said at the time: “Is it worth me going to see Liverpool? There's no one on show. Chelsea? No. Manchester United? I'd like to say there are three players in every team worth watching. That would be utopia for me.”

Things have certainly changed since Pearce was in his prime as a player. On the opening weekend of 1992's inaugural Premier League season, 76% of the players in starting XIs were English, whereas only 37% were English on the first weekend of the current season.

It is actually possible to list the non-British or Irish players who featured on that weekend in 1992: Peter Schmeichel and Andrei Kanchelskis (Manchester United), Jan Stejskal (QPR), Roland Nilsson (Sheffield Wednesday), Michel Vonk (Manchester City), John Jensen and Anders Limpar (Arsenal), Hans Segers (Wimbledon), Tony Dorigo and Cantona (Leeds) and Gunnar Halle (Oldham). In fact, only 10% (23 players) of the starting players who started matches throughout that 1992/93 season were from outside the UK. This season that number has increased to 56% (123).

There are in fact more than 300 foreign imports from 66 different countries spread out among the playing rosters of the 20 BPL clubs. Bolton Wanderers alone boast a squad containing players of 24 different nationalities from countries as diverse as Senegal, Oman, Liberia and Iran.

That's why Aston Villa stand out. But perhaps we shouldn't be surprised that it's Villa who seem to be championing a return to old-fashioned values. After all, Villa were the last club to put out an all-English starting XI in the Premier League. That happened when the likes of Paul Merson, Dion Dublin and Ian Taylor represented the club in 1999.

Of course, Aston Villa didn't win anything that season. In fact, the last time anyone won anything with an all-English team was 1975 when West Ham beat Fulham in the FA Cup Final.

Hence Arsene Wenger's widely reported opposition to Blatter's suggestion. Hence Sven Goran Eriksson's move this summer to bolster Manchester City with Brazilian internationals and proven Champions League performers rather than expensive and largely untested English hopefuls from a lower division.

Wenger has rightly pointed out that club managers have a responsibility solely to their employers and fans. While he acknowledges that the national team could be weakened if more clubs follow his approach to sourcing talent, he insists that England cannot hope to have both a strong national team and a world-conquering franchise in the shape of the BPL.

To end on a note that will encourage Stuart Pearce more than the senior England manager (who has enough to worry about already), Arsenal have already produced a healthy crop of youngsters qualified to play for England - even if Arsene Wenger has chosen to jettison most of them. Meanwhile, O'Neill's English players at Villa Park are all either current or past Under-21 internationals. At City, Sven has managed to blend young English guns with his more exotic imports to great effect.

So, is there as big a problem of “national identity” as Sepp Blatter seems to think there is? The fans of the three clubs mentioned above probably don't have that many complaints about the direction they are taking right now, nor would they seem to be suffering any identity crises. What is more, Stuart Pearce may even see Englishmen Kerrea Gilbert and Justin Hoyte join Theo Walcott in tasting Champions League action for Arsenal this season. Once again, it would seem Blatter has over-reacted.

Croatia boss Slaven Bilic claimed England had lost to a better team tonight as a 3-2 defeat at Wembley eliminated Steve McClaren's side from Euro 2008.

'We didn't feel that kind of negative pressure,' he told Sky Sports News.
