Skipper may make Roma trip

Club captain Gary Neville may make his first team return to action in United's final Champions League Group F clash against Roma.

Having missed eight months of action, the Reds' skipper had been expected to take part in two or three Reserves games before making a senior return.

Neville missed Thursday's Reserve League victory over Sunderland but United boss Sir Alex allayed any fears of a further setback at his press conference on Friday.

"Obviously it begs the question when he didn't play in the Reserves game on Thursday night," the manager admitted, "but at the moment he prefers to keep training with us.

"He could have played in the Reserves but he wants to get to a good level of fitness. We concur with that because it's important he gets plenty of good training sessions before he starts playing in games.

"There's a possibility that, if he comes through next week okay, I'll take him to Rome and play him in the Roma game. He's coming along well and I don't think he's far away now."
Neville has been out of action since suffering ankle ligament damage against Bolton last March, and a series of subsequent setbacks have derailed his recuperation.

With United travelling to Rome assured of topping Group F, however, it seems Sir Alex will take advantage of the chance to ease Neville back into senior action on a bigger stage.

Man Utd v Fulham preview

Wayne Rooney returns to the Manchester United side as the champions face Fulham at Old Trafford.

The England striker has missed his club's last three matches with an ankle injury, but is expected to be thrust straight back into the starting line-up as United aim to keep pace with the leaders.

A 1-0 defeat at Bolton in their last Premier League match ended a 10-game unbeaten run and, following Arsenal's win over Aston Villa on Saturday, United can not afford to lose any more ground.

Sir Alex Ferguson seems certain to make changes from the team which lost at Bolton, and some of those who started the UEFA Champions League success over Sporting Lisbon could also make way.

Rooney and Tevez reunited

Former Fulham striker Louis Saha claims he is now 'injury free', but he may be dropped to allow Rooney and Carlos Tevez to resume their burgeoning partnership up front.

Cristiano Ronaldo, runner-up to Kaka for the Ballon d'Or, has scored in four of his last five appearances against Fulham and will start, with Ryan Giggs likely to play ahead of Nani on the left.

Michael Carrick has yet to impress this season, so Ferguson could restore Owen Hargreaves to the team alongside Anderson in the centre of midfield.

Wes Brown should dislodge John O'Shea at right-back and ex-Fulham keeper Edwin van der Sar will come back in for Tomasz Kuszczak.

United captain Gary Neville could make his first-team return against Roma next week, while Paul Scholes, Park Ji-sung, Ben Foster and Mikael Silvestre are long-term absentees.

Healy hope

Fulham will head to Old Trafford more in hope than expectation given the club's wretched away form in the Premier League.

The West London side have won just two of their last 44 away matches in the league, and have not won on the road since September 2006 at Newcastle United.

It will be yet another tough test for Lawrie Sanchez's side, who have already encountered Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool away from home this season.

Sanchez must decide whether to make changes from the team which drew 2-2 at home to Blackburn Rovers in their last game as Fulham once again threw away a winning position.

The Cottagers have no fresh injury concerns for the game, with David Healy pushing for a starting role against the club where he began his career.

But Moritz Volz is unlikely to be risked for his first appearance since August, and Sanchez is missing a string of experienced players.

Brian McBride has suffered a setback in his recovery from a knee injury, while Lee Cook, Philippe Christanval, Jimmy Bullard and Simon Elliott are yet to play this season.

Ian Pearce and Kasey Keller are also long-term absentees for Fulham, who have conceded nine goals in their last two visits to Old Trafford.
